Examples of every rating

Image result for out of 10 rating

I realized the other day my out of 10 rating system might seem rather ambiguous to someone without a firm understanding of my tastes. As such I wanted to give up to 3 examples of each rating and the reason why they have the score they do so that you can understand what each score means on a more concrete level. I'm hoping this blog can help show that every point different is a massive difference, and why there are so few things I ever give a 1-2 score too or a 9-10 score too.

1/10:

Mahou Shoujo Isuka:
This is my most hated series of all time. I don't bring it up much because I don't like speaking negative about things, and so most of my friends probably don't even know about it prior to this. It's a series that is as base tasteless as you can possible get. It's a series about the rape and humiliation of lolicon magical girls, including "parodies" of Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura. It's got sooooo much wrong with it.

2/10:

Difference between a 1/10 and a 2/10: A 2/10 is something that annoys me constantly and occasionally makes me angry. A 1/10 is something I hate every moment off.

Nami SOS:
Amidst it's sub-genre sub-genre, Nami SOS is so generic that it's sort of the perfect stand-in for awful awful Magical Girl Rape Hentai.

Naria Girls:
Naria Girls has the distinction of being the worst magical girl series I've ever seen that is NOT a hentai. It's still AWFUL. Like, everything about it is not just bad but incoherent. That said it's offensive or aggravating per se, it's just super incompetent

Gone Home:
Aka "Walking Simulator 90s Edition". Basically a really short no gameplay "game" with pretentious plot and characters, and eye-rolling politics.

3/10:
Difference between a 2/10 and a 3/10: The difference between a 2/10 and a 3/10 is a 2/10 just seems wholly incompetent while a 3/10 I could at least see what they were "trying" to do or has at least something that is done right, even if it's not much.

Ultimate Girls:
Basically just a fetish show for "inflation" enthusiasts. It's has some humor but is also uncomfortable at times. It is fun to remind certain people of it's existence :P

Dragon Ball Evolution:
As a Dragon Ball film it's awful. As a standalone fantasy-martial arts action film it's.....still pretty bad but not quite as much, enough though that I feel pretty safe in calling it a really bad movie.

Alone in the Dark:
How did THIS movie get a sequel? It's boring, and dumb, and all the things that don't make good cinema.

4/10:
Difference between a 3/10 and a 4/10: A 3/10 and a 4/10 both have large sections that are bad. A 4/10 though has some sections that are not bad, usually just decent though.

Vampire Knight:
I have a lot of nostalgia for Vampire Knight, although it's not really a good series by most measures. It's been called "Anime Twilight", I haven't read Twilight but that seems a bit of an exaggeration in terms of quality going by common census on Twilight. That said while it's got parts that are better, it's not something I'd recommend really.

Metroid: Other M:
Metroid: Other M is sort of the perfect example of how 4/10 can be internally divided. Other M is bad in terms of story and character, with characters acting wildly out of character and plot elements that are really out of place. That said gameplay wise it's fairly solid, though obviously not Metroid's best.

DBGT:
DBGT has a lot of concepts that I like in theory, and has some scattered bits that I think are underappreciated but the execution definitely leaves a lot to be desired and was a large step-down from DBZ.

5/10:
Difference between 4/10 and 5/10: A 5/10 does not have as many or as noticeable problems as a 4/10, but it just is sort of eh, a decent but not particularly notable series.

Inuyasha:
Inuyasha is a lot like Vampire Knight in that it's nostalgic, except it's aged slightly better. While both series start good and go downhill generally imo, Inuyasha's drop was more gradual and less extreme.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe:
For a crossover game featuring the DC Universe, one of my favorite fictional universes, meeting Mortal Kombat, an ultraviolent world of action....this game is surprisingly dull. I didn't think anything about it was terrible, but it was just sort of meh. The final boss is literally easy enough that "I" could beat him.

Devil Hunter Yohko:
This series was made just before Sailor Moon, and while it some cool parts, it can get really bland if you aren't the otaku type, since without any distinct magical girl feel, it really is mostly just anime tropes as a series.

6/10:
Difference between a 5/10 and a 6/10: A 6/10 are kind of average, but have some really cool parts while a 5/10 is mostly just bland. A 6/10 is not a bad score, it's above average.

Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch:
Generally abbreviated as MMPPP. I don't get the hate for this series. Yeah the story is a little predictable and cliche for the MG Genre. But it's really cute, it's got nice music (anime only obviously), it's characters are nice and it has, at least imo, pretty interesting worldbuilding. It's not amazing but it's easy enough to watch.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians:
Read the first series because it was getting so much attention. I don't get quite the hype for it. I thought it was fine, and fun enough. Annabeth was cute.

Jake and Amir:
A series of short vids that were the only thing I watched on collegehumor basically. They're amusing enough and short enough that they sort of work like the video equivalent of potato chips. It's sort of a short guilt-free way of getting some quick amusement. It's not amazing but it's fun enough.

7/10:
Difference between a 6/10 and a 7/10: A 6/10 is decent fun. A 7/10 is the level where I would start calling myself a fan. A 7/10 I actually feel appeals to me, and has some thing really good about it or is at least very consistent in being good.

Little Witch Academia:
Not, I haven't actually finished. This is my current score. While I don't fully get the hype for this series so far, I do quite like it. It's generally cute and funny and has some parts that I feel could be really great if they are properly developed.

Portal:
Portal is limited by it's minimalism. There isn't much time, mechanics, or characters. Yet because of it's minimalism it does all of those fairly well. It's few characters, outside maybe the mute main character, are engaging to hear (granted both of the two characters of any significant story impact in the present day are both homicidal AI) and it has nifty science-fiction puzzles. That's really all it has, humorous dialogue from homicidal sarcastic AI and interesting science puzzles. That's enough to put it here.

Dragon Ball Part 1:
The original Dragon Ball is, if not perfect, a fun fantasy adventure with lots of mythology and folklore references, and cute charming plots and characters for the majority of it's time.

8/10:
Difference between a 7/10 and a 8/10: This is the difference of "being a fan" and "being in the fandom". A 7/10 is "I like the series, I think it's good and has it's strong suit." An 8/10 means I think it's consistently good and that it reaches amazing levels at some points, and by amazing I mean, moments that I really want to gush about and that I want to replicate in my own writing because it's go good.

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt:
I thought P&S was consistently hilarious, and the funniest MG series I have ever seen. And it's not "just" funny. It's cool and stylized, with really fun characters and some of it's episodes just left me cheering at the screen. Panty is bae. <3

Okami:
I love all the mythology and folklore in Okami, but even more then that, I love the heart in it, and the joy of the world being restored to it's glory. I love the celestial themes in this game. It also has my favorite ending to any video game ever. This game is beautiful.

Yu Yu Hakusho:
YYH is the stereotypical shonen formula boiled down to it's essentials and refined to it's apex. It's a series brimming over with potential and which really shorts the art of fighting as a true art in itself, with interesting powers and characters. It's really heartwarming seeing the gradual transition of the punk Yusuke to a true hero.

9/10:
Difference between an 8/10 and a 9/10: A 8/10 is a series I really really like, but a 9/10 series has me thinking about it all the time, it's amazing more often then not and it has moments that are just mindblowing, that make me have big emotional episodes.

Cardcaptor Sakura:
It's like if innocence and cuteness were made manifest in a series. It's hard to imagine a person so cold that they could not find joy in the simple adventures of Sakura and friends. It's an imaginative and adorable series from start to finish that helps me see the best in people and situations.

Saint Seiya:
I've mention that I like mythology before. I like mythology because it has such grandeur and potency in it's archetypes. I also like cosmic themes because of their grandeur and scope. Saint Seiya combines both of these in one of the most epic adventures ever, while still being fast-paced and creative.

DC Comics:
DC Comics has a lot of things I've mentioned loving before, however what I really adore about DC Comics is the meta-narrative that it's whole universe is founded on. DC Comics is a meta-narrative about the connection between things and the potential for goodness in all people. I love many parts of DC Comics, more then I can name here, but beyond all things I love it's overwhelming optimism, in every incarnation, towards the ability of people to do the right thing and be noble.

10/10:
Difference between a 9/10 and a 10/10: A 9/10 has big mind-blowing emotional moments that change my perspective completely as their big moments. A 10/10 however has that as it's default state of being. A 10/10 series is not a perfect series, a 10/10 is something that has changed me as a person for the better. It's something that makes me understand the world better. It's something that makes me see every other work in fiction clearer and makes me like them more just from proximity.

I have 1 10/10 series. Everyone knows my favorite series is Sailor Moon and a lot of people understand a large part of why it is. I don't really think it's vital to explain yet again why it's a 10/10.

When I'm figuring out a series' score, these things per score are probably a good example to use if you want to know what kind of things I am saying are comparable to it in quality in my opinion. I really hope that people will understand that if I give a series you like a 6/10 that is not a bad score and doesn't mean I dislike it, and if I say that the series you really dislike I'd give a 3/10, that doesn't mean I think it's sort of decent.

Imp's Top 5 moments from the MCU so far

Note, I haven't seen all of the MCU, I haven't seen a lot of the "latest" films. I am rather mixed on this series of films and I wanted to give my top 5 favorite moments from this film series. I do not share the common love for this series that others do but I hope that this will show I am not so cold as to judge the whole in a broad stroke.

Number 5: "Dormammu, I've come to Bargain" ("Doctor Strange")

I really like magic. Magic has the ability in fiction to let the writer's creativity flow unimpeded, to depict scenarios so fantastical that they break the mind. The ending of Doctor Strange is a great example of this. I love the way that he defeats this cosmic entity (btw I really like evil eldritch cosmic entities as antagonists) so much stronger then him by clever usage of the magical powers at hand and in a way that is not cliche but with a legitimate fantastical tactic.

It also ties well into Stephen's character arc, that he is willing to lose over and over against his ego to protect the world.

Number 4: Peter turns down the Avengers ("Spider-Man: Homecoming")

Peter Parker is the moral conscious of the Marvel Universe, in every Marvel Universe. There's something so heartwarming to see him refuse to become part of some giant network, and just want to stay close to the ground, support his local community, being the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Maybe seems like an odd choice from this movie since there are a number of good moments to pick from, but I honestly remember being really touched at Peter's decision. We all dream of making a difference in the world, but Spider-Man is not Superman. He's not usually a hero by changing the world himself. He's a hero by showing us how we can tackle the strain and stress of our day to day lives. With Optimism and Determination.

If the world needs him, he'll be there, but otherwise he's just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Number 3: "I love you, Cassie" ("Ant-Man")

Ant-Man for the most part I thought was a fine comedy but nothing too spectacular, with one exception. The stuff about Scott's love for his daughter touched me deeply and seeing him and Paxton, the proverbial con and cop, work together trying to protect her, especially Scott's sacrifice at the end really moved me to tearing up.

I am a huge sucker for familial themes in fiction just in general.

Number 2: "There are always men like you" ("The Avengers")

THIS. This is the kind of stuff I absolutely adore in fiction. Loki lords over the civilians before an elderly man stands and refuses to submit to him. When Loki claims there are no men like him, the elderly man says "There are ALWAYS men like you."

I adore so much when normal people act heroic because I believe in the heroism of normal people very much. And it has such a nice sentiment behind it, that for all Loki's claim of power and godhood he is no different then any number of completely human people who have come before him claiming the same. We are all just people.

Number 1: Captain America vs Iron Man ("Captain America: Civil War")

Honestly this moment shocked me watching it. It's the closest this film series has ever come to being my favorite film series, albeit much darker. The raw pathos of the two as their two arcs, Tony's isolation since being a child and Steve's desire to find and protect his lost soldier in arms coming to head as the two former friends come to blows. It's an intensity I was unprepared for. It is not thematically pretty or bright, in ways I usually like, and yet I find myself compelled, like a screenplay in old times, into the human drama and tragedy of the situation. It is easily my favorite scene in the MCU so far.

How hax is your verse

This is an attempt to give a way of telling easily how hax a verse is relative to most verses. First you are going to find an A, B, C, and D score for the verse between 0 and 8.

A: Highest Plane Affected: Showing how fundamental a level of reality the verse can affect.

0: Characters have no special ability to control reality
1: Elemental Manipulation. Characters have very specific abilities to control the physical realm like water or earth manipulation.
2: Matter-Energy Manipulation. Characters have broad ability to control matter or energy or both, the fundamental objects of the physical realm. Intangibility would fall here since it's a manipulation of matter.
3: Space-Time Manipulation. Characters have broad ability to control the fabric of spacetime. Sealing falls here since it's a Spatial Lock.
4: Astral Manipulation. Characters can affect souls or the astral plane.
5: Mental Manipulation. Characters can affect minds or the mental plane.
6: Consciousness or Spiritual Manipulation. Characters can directly affect the consciousness or the spirit (either plane since consciousness manipulation is so rare).
7: Abstract or Conceptual Manipulation. Can directly manipulate abstract concepts.
8: Absolute or Metafictional Manipulation. Can affect the nature of reality itself.

B: Hax Breadth. Take the maximum number of abilities from A that a single character possess and that's the score. 1 of the 8 is 1. 2 of the 8 is 2.

C: Scale of Hax: The most large-scale manipulation of the hax known (if greater then, then round down)

0: No Scale at all, ability does not exist.
1: Local Scale (immediate surroundings)
2: City Scale
3: Planet Scale
4: Stellar Scale
5: Galactic Scale
6: Universal Scale
7: Multiversal Scale
8: Omniversal Scale

D: Commonness of Hax: How common is the highest hax in the verse? This is in numbers of people. You can use a lower degree of hax and if you do lower points equal to the difference between the two degree of haxes (for instance if the highest hax is Spiritual Hax (6) but there is a lot of Astral Hax (4), you can take the commonness score of Astral and then subtract the difference between them (6-4=2) so subtract 2.

0: None
1: Only a Few
2: A Small Community Worth (Thousands of people)
3: A Planet's Worth (Millions of people)
4: Numerous Planet's Worth/A Star System's Worth (Trillions of people)
5: A Galactic Civilization's Worth
6: A Universal Civilization's Worth
7: A Multiversal Civilization's Worth
8: Literally Infinite

Take A, B, C, and D score and average them (add them and then divide by 4.) Then divide that by the verse's relative power score. IE the highest dc feat shown in the verse.

1: Local
2: City
3: Planetary
4: Stellar
5: Galactic
6: Universal
7: Multiversal
8: Omniversal

This should get a relative haxness between 0 and 8. (though it rarely goes above 1) This can also be done with a single character just by taking only A, B, and C and averaging those alone.

Hax Levels Examples:
0: No Hax Levels at all.
0.125 (1/8): Very low. Verse is mostly just physical force showings and the characters haxes is at a much lower level that what would be expected normally. Power is pretty much just raw power and haxing people is rare.
0.25 (1/4): Relatively Low. Verse likely has some degree of important haxes in-verse but relative to other verses their haxes aren't very strong.
0.5 (1/2): Hax. Verse hax enough haxes to be competitive in the hax scene against similarly powerful verses.
1: Very Hax. Verse is relatively broken and would be able to stomp most similarly powered verses due to having very hard to counter abilities.
2: Broken. Verse is outright broken and can majorly stomp anything except verses similarly broken  verses or verse much stronger.

There are more specific numbers but those should give a good indication.

This was just a sort of prototype, hopefully it's found interesting. It is likely still flawed but it seems to have basic functionality so far.

Divisions of FTL Speed

As is common knowledge to anyone with an even barely functioning physics understanding nothing with mass in the real universe can accelerate to faster then light in a vacuum. This is often paraphrased as "nothing can go faster then light" which is not technically true; there are circumstances where you can slow down light in a medium to the point that other things can accelerate past it, there are theoretical particles that are always faster then light, and things that are completely immaterial like say thought, are not necessarily bound to the speed of light. However there is no physical quantity known that can accelerate to faster then light in a vacuum.

In fiction there are obviously entities that can travel much faster then light and so we must define their speed as being faster then light. However if we are to give them abbreviations to quickly reference speed then it becomes a problem if we are giving characters of rapidly different velocities the same speed category since that would be defeating the point of giving them a speed category. The only differentiation that is regular in versus communities however are FTL and MFTL (starting at either 100 or 1,000c depending on person and context). I wanted to propose a sort of easy way to differentiate speed at very high tiers of speed.

FTL: Same as Normal. Anything above the speed of light
MFTL: Same as Normal. I treat it as over 1,000c.

And here is where the divisions come in.

MFTL+: A denotation of being to lightspeed what lightspeed is to humanspeed or in other words it is 299,972,458 (the speed of light) squared equating to approximately 300,000,000c (slightly less since light is 299,792,458 meters per second, so it would be actually 299,792,458c) or above.
MFTL++/MFTL(2): A denotation of being to MFTL+ what MFTL+ is to lightspeed, so multiplying that by another factor of c's velocity. Slightly under 90 Quadrillion C and above
MFTL+++/(MFTL(3): The Trend continues. Approximately 26.944 Septillion C and above
MFTL++++/MFTL(4): The Trend continues. Approximately 8.0776 Decillion C and above.

This trend can be extended to any arbitrarily high finite velocity and gives speed blocks that are easy to denote ("MFTL++" or "MFTL(2)" for instance)

Obviously most speed feats will easily be within the first 2 and most of the rest will be in the third.

If you wanted to go above finite speed, you could have infinite speed. You would actually NOT get infinite speed by crossing a finite space in 0 time. That's a basic divide by zero error. 10/0 does not equal infinity. You could get infinite speed however either by the verse explicitly calling it infinite speed or by crossing an infinite space in finite time.

Time Travel via speed is only as good a speed feat as the verse itself says. If you try to apply a velocity formula to traveling backwards in time you'd get a negative speed because it would be a positive numerator (positive change in space) over a negative denominator (negative change in time...going back in time) which would make the fraction negative. Or you're not moving in space at all at which point the time travel speed is exactly 0 since the numerator is 0. The argument some people try to make is that time travel means you can change the denominator at will making it take as long or as short as you want it too, and it's true but what you're talking about then is essentially a form of teleportation. Assuming you have infinitely fine control of the denominator this basically gives you the ability to go to any point in an arbitrary amount of time however this doesn't necessarily buffer your reaction speed at all, like teleportation, since reaction speed though it's often explained as a speed, it's actually not. Reaction "speed" is really reaction time since there is no spatial component, merely a temporal component of how fast you can react.

Anyway this was merely a suggestion on how to make very high speeds more immediately legible and understandable.
