How they Compare: Akuma Homura

Spoilers for PMMM...but the title itself is a spoiler so...

Akuma Homura is the ultimate evil of the Madoka-multiverse, originally a "normal" magical girl until she stole some of the power of the Goddess Madoka and ascended into her demonic form in order to protect Madoka and always keep her close to her.

But how strong is this devil anyway?

Physically speaking, Akuma Homura would be far physically stronger then any Witch should she physically manifest which means she would likely be far stronger then Kriemhild Gretchen, a witch so physically large that the Earth was only the size of one of her eyes, and was comprised of enough despair to end a universe.

Even though she has only a "fraction" of Madoka's power, Homura has the capacity to reality-warp an entire universe in seconds. Kami Madoka and Akuma Homura were also able to react to each other's magic briefly suggesting that their reactions are in par with this speed quadrillions of times lightspeed.

Homura is not quite an abstract entity although no longer purely physical either. Described as neither being quite witch or god, she is the Devil of the Madoka Multiverse and her barrier, the dimension each witch-being projects and warps as their personal domain, is large enough to contain the entire universe. For reference sake, Kriemhild Gretchen's was only stated to contain the Earth.

Homura has a wide variety of powers, even outside of her reality-warping. Even in her normal Magical Girl State she was able to stop time for unstated relative periods to her, and could reset timelines. She also has a magical shield which she can use in conjunction with spatial manipulation to essentially use hammerspace and pull anything she has stored in her shield out. During the Wrath Arc of the Manga, Homura the Magical Girl also gained telepathy and the ability to alter the memories of others.

In her witch Form, known as Homulilly, Homura gained the ability to protect her own barrier like all witches and to summon her familiars to serve her. During the Rebellion Movie she also demonstrated her ability to drain the power of others, even from conceptual entities like Madoka.

In her Devil Form, all her previous magical girl and witch powers are massively boosted. She's able to completely alter someone's memories at will or seal away all their powers. She was able to easily force the Incubators, a type IV civilization that act on the universal scale to serve her will by her sheer mental strength.

How would Homura do in other verses?

Image result for DC Universe

In the DC Universe, Homura would be equivalent to a Pre-COIE Level Powerhouse or a Post-COIE "Crisis" Level Event. In the Post-Crisis Universe, she would be a monstrous threat to the universe, though it would be possible for the Justice League to stop her if they all fought together. She would be approximately equal to a Pre-Crisis Strong League Member like Pre-Crisis Superman, Goddess of Truth Wonder Woman, and so on. Primarily her lack of speed might prove to be her undoing against people of this verse though her ability to seal off powers would make her very dangerous.

In the Marvel Universe, Homura would rank as a Cube Being generally speaking, similar to Post-Retcon Beyonder and Post-Retcon Molecule Man. She would be generally above Skyfather level beings like Odin in terms of raw power, though their speed, experience and versatility might allow them to fight semi-evenly against her. That said if she can steal the power from the concepts of Infinity, Eternity, Death, or Oblivion she would rise to be far more of a threat then her current position.

In the Final Fantasy Universe Akuma Homura would be roughly equivalent to a void being or the most powerful of sorceresses like Cloud of Darkness or Ultimecia's Final Form. She would be as strong as most of the highest tier but would still be below the ultimate top tiers of the verse, though her greater level of speed compared to most of the verse would give her a notable advantage.

In the Sailor Moon Universe, Homura's power to reality-warp the universe would put her above even the strongest Normal Sailor Crystals in the universe including the Silver Crystal, the Golden Crystal, the Saphir Crystal, and Black Crystal, however Homura's lack of experience and versatility compared to some Top Tiers in the verse make it possible that she would lose to some of the strongest characters in the verse like Queen Serenity or Sailor Galaxia. Against the strongest two characters of the verse it is highly unlikely she can defeat Chaos even in it's base form, although it is possible if she siphon's off it's power like she did Madoka.

In the Clamp verse, Homura would be able to easily have complete dominion over any individual universe's spirits and magicians she wants, and she could act as a local god or supreme spirit does similar to Mokona to Cephiro. She would likely be stronger then most of them given the versatility of her powers and her speed relative to them. If left alone, she could eventually overcome and control the multiverse however the supreme forces of the multiverse would be very likely capable of stopping her, most notably the high mages of Fei Wang Reed and Sakura Kinomoto.

In the Haruhi-verse, Homura would be capable of having complete dominion over entire timelines as Haruhi does, and would be able to overcome the advanced technology of the Data Integrated Sentient Entity similar to how Haruhi took control of the Incubators, which would give Homura essentially control of reality. That said Haruhi is unaware of her powers and if awakened would theoretically be far stronger then Homura similar to how if Madoka reawoke to her powers, she would be similarly.

In the Bastard!! universe, Homura's power would be above even that of Satan who is a gradual universal threat, and would be comparable to the power of God, the universe creator. That said the existence of Dispel Bounds and Eternal Atoms would likely slow down her reality-warp powers drastically and there are some techniques which may have the ability to kill her from Seraph-Level Entities and above, specifically ones which destroy on the physical, astral, and spiritual planes at the same time. It is unknown whether those would kill Homura since Homura is partially an abstraction in her Devil Form.

In Image Comics, Akuma Homura would be roughly comparable in power to God, Satan and Spawn's strongest forms and the four of them would enter a new half political half power game for control of the cosmos. That said she would still not be as strong as the Man of Miracles who is a high degree of multiversal.

What I am expecting if Sailor Moon is in DB

This is a quick blog giving what my suspicions will be if SM is actually going to be in the next DB.

Due to Sailor Moon Classic, being so iconic they will probably attempt to justify both her low-ends in that and her higher-ends from the manga as consistent by using the fact that Silver Crystal's power varies depending on her emotional state. I imagine for their description they will likely say something along the lines of

"When the Silver Crystal's TRUE power is unleashed it can destroy planets or more!

Indeed! Supposedly, The Silver Crystal's full potential is infinite though it is limited by the intensity of Usagi's emotional state"

I imagine the start of her analysis will be correcting over the fact that her name is Usagi, not Serena and make some reference to the 90s English Dub, basically for the casuals sake

I imagine they will list her attacks and give the traits of the attacks in the sidebar.

probably have fun in the animation with her ultrasonic crying which people like to use.

Weaknesses: Probably won't get into her merciful nature which is her actual weakness EoS and instead stick with iconic weaknesses which she for most of the series; that she is clumsy, a crybaby, easily scared, not the brightest, etc.

Probably some joke about their surprise at how dark the series is, since that tends to surprise casuals

Now to give some potential scenarios of people she is asked to fight in DB

VS Madoka:

If Usagi wins....

Probably will say that Sailor Moon defeated Chaos, who is also an abstract concept just like Madoka, while in her Lambda State, and that Usagi can seal Madoka or wipe her memory which were exactly what Homura did to her in rebellion. Might also say something like Madoka's power is Godly but Usagi's Full Potential is Infinite or something.

If Madoka wins...

Will probably say that the Lambda Power that Usagi absorbed and used to defeat Chaos counts as outside help (which really doesn't make sense given Neo-Queen Serenity and Sailor Cosmos) forms but whatever and will probably believe the omnipresent and omniscient hype despite the contradictions with those. Might also say something about how Usagi needs time for the Silver Crystal to get as strong as Madoka or that the Silver Crystals heals good people and wouldn't hurt Madoka therefore.

VS Sakura:

If Usagi wins....

Probably will say that Usagi's powers are more combat oriented and make mention of Sakura's human nature means she wouldn't be able to survive battling in space for very long like Usagi regularly does. They might also reference the part where The Erase took longer to affect Sakura and Syaoran because of their magic and say Usagi's magic would give her resistance to Sakura's cards.

If Sakura wins...

Probably will say that it's because Sakura has a lot less of Usagi's character flaws and say that Sakura's powers were more versatile and that's she more resourceful and intelligent. If they recognize Usagi has a regen then they will probably say something about that could be stopped by The Erase (which is false) or the Nothing (which is true).

VS Goku (certainly not happening next episode, and almost certainly not gonna happen at all):

If Usagi wins...

Probably will say that Goku doesn't have any special defense against magic like Usagi's and that the Silver Crystal has the same infinite potential that Goku does. Might reference Usagi's Super Sailor Moon form giving her 10,000 times more power as being a stronger powerup then all of Goku's initial super saiyan forms combined.

If Goku wins....

Probably will say that both have infinite potential but that Goku is more of a fighter and so would and does draw on that potential more then Usagi does. Might say that while both aren't that intelligent, Goku is a combat genius while Usagi is not.

VS Seiya:

If Usagi wins....

Probably gonna say that Seiya's desire to not fight women would give Usagi an advantage. Might also say that Saints can't survive in space for that long unlike Usagi so in a prolonged space fight Usagi would win

If Seiya wins...

Probably gonna give a similar thing to if Goku wins over Usagi, and add that while Usagi has an insane amount of magic techniques, that a Saint automatically adapts to a technique after being hit by it once meaning that while it would go on for a while, Seiya would eventually overcome Usagi.

I should note: this isn't necessarily what "I" believe, just what I think they will claim.

Imp's Top 10 Husbandos and Waifus

Just for the lols decided to make this list, don't expect much information on why I like each one because honestly I like them for pretty similar reasons. I am gonna be honest I have pretty clear "types". For males I like some combination of:

* Tall
* Muscular
* Dark-Haired
* Gentlemanly
* Smart
* Withdrawn
* Good-Natured and Gentle
* Wanted by a lot of women
* Bisexual
* Possess a hidden amount of passion or needs emotional comfort

I never was really into the bad boy type, I much prefer knights who I can be all damsel in distress-y towards.

For females I like some combination
* Blond and long-haired (9 out of 10 of my waifus are blond...take that how you will)
* Perky
* Bustiness
* Playful Nature
* Sometimes a more dominant or casual disposition
* More....open sexually then I am
* Extraverted
* Wanted by a lot of men
* Bisexual
* Needs emotional comfort

So......yeah. I have pretty clear types, as you will probably see.

Husbandos:

10: Masaya Aoyama (Tokyo Mew Mew):

He's so responsible and supportive and your parents will like him and he's all toned from being the school kendo champ, and all the others girl want him and he needs a cute girl to teach him the value of humanity.

9: Kyoya Ootori (Ouran High School Host Club)

Yes I like Ouran High School......don't laugh. He might seem like the bad boy (and also disinterested in girls) but the smart boy clearly just needs a girl to that can warm his ice cold temperment/heart

8: Yue (Cardcaptor Sakura)

ffffffffffff look at him he's so pretty and wispy and mysterious. He's also so elegant and mature and sophisticated

7: Yugi Muto (Yu-gi-oh!)

A Restrained mature regal man and a cute little kind woobie boy. Two hot boys at once....I don't care if this counts as two lol.

6: Spider-Man (Marvel Comics)

Poor Peter! He was a bullied nerd who is constantly angsting about everyone around perpetually dying or going evil. He's also super smart and got a great bod from his mutation. Definitely the sexiest spider related thing ever made.

5: Son Gohan (Dragon Ball)

By far my favorite Dragon Ball character, Gohan pulls off Toriyama's cartoonish body drawing if only because he's also an awkward nerd (The Great Saiyaman) while also being such a positive gentlemanly guy. Also unlike Goku I'm pretty sure he knows what kissing is kappa

4: Lantis (Magic Knight Rayearth)

Don't let the armor fool you, Lantis is a sweetheart inside even if he spends most of his time angsting about how his brother turned evil. He's a smart reserved polite knight with deep insecurities and issues he needs to work through and a noble stallion to carry girls off on. He's so handsome the hero of Cephiro Hikaru basically chose him as her mate.

3: Dragon Shiryu (Saint Seiya)

Dragon Shiryu is the most calm and level headed main character in Saint Seiya which is definitely saying a lot given how emphathic he still is. Regardless he's mature and responsible and looks after everyone and has a famous determination and persistance that shows his indomitable manly willpower. Also he's blind which I feel like might enhance his sense of feel.

2: Superman (DC Comics)

What lady wouldn't want the strongest man on Earth fawning over her. Clark is a real Gentleman, with a calm gentle exterior, an intelligent mind, a strong manly body, and a lovable adorable heart. Also he can literally just make you diamonds whenever you want so that's also a plus.

1: Tuxedo Kamen (Sailor Moon)

He's so cool! Everything about Mamoru is just like perfect husbando material. He's smart, gentle, elegant, wise, sophisticated, worldy, cultured, troubled, popular, charismatic. It's not wonder all the villainess in SM want him.

Waifus:

10: Honey Kisaragi (Cutey Honey)

Honey is playful, responsible and feminine all at the same time and is crushed on by basically everyone in her universe because she's so hot. Plus she's an android that can turn into "anything" so points for imagination.

9: Mami Tomoe (Puella Magi Madoka Magicka)

Mami is the mature responsible one of the Puella Magi while still being playful and cool. She's an older sister like figure with accompanying curves to match. Also she needs love after being traumatized by fighting alone for such a long time

8: The Invisible Woman (Marvel Comics)

Sue Storm is a loving maternal figure who keeps the other FF members in harmony and is super affection and protective while also having an amazing bod when you can see it.

7: Fate Testarossa (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha)

Fate is so noble and knightly, able to play the role of hero in shining armor to a captured princess great. She was Nanoha's Rival at first but then got befriended and is now a hero and an actually confirmed lesbian in relationship with Nanoha. Also she probably needs emotional consoling after her traumatic childhood.

6: Zatanna (DC Comics)

The only non-blonde girl here, I legit think I might have a magician fetish. Zatanna is so playful and fun and also is a total daddy's girl which is a plus.

5: Panty Anarchy (Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt)

Panty Anarchy is exactly what I would define as an "Alpha Female". She is so confident and playfully controlling. She's so sexually experienced and dominant I find her power irresistible.

4: Noel Vermillion (BlazBlue)

Noel mixes both a sweet poetic emotional side with the a responsible controlling mature side. She is so feminine while also being able to be dominant in a relationship. Also her outfits are pretty.

3: Black Magician Girl (Yu-gi-oh!)

She's so quirky-fun and relatable as a clumsy magician's assistant while also being playful and unpredictable. Despite having such a small amount of screen time she is universally regarded as one of if not the hottest female in the series.

2: Samus Aran

Samus is a cool as freak Alpha Female Bounty Hunter who nonetheless retains femininity and grace despite being more aggressive then any boy I've ever met. She can pull of any outfit from the zero suit to a workout bra and make it so hot. And she needs a cute small lovable thing to help her cope with the trauma of her home colony getting destroyed in front of her eyes.

1: Sailor Venus (Sailor Moon)

Jesus Christ Minako how is everything you do the finest thing anyone has ever done. Minako is the Goddess of Love and she's so playful and unpredictable and girly. She's somehow an alpha female while also being relatable and somehow also being non-threatening or overwhelming. It's paradoxical and yet she somehow perfectly can stimulate all the desires at once.

So yeah those are my top 10 husbandos and waifus.

Stop mocking me :P

Magical Girl Power Tiers

Short Blog, This is how I internally divide Magical Girls by Tiers

Heroic Tiers:

Tier 7: Civilian Tier

Human Level Physically, magic powers if existent are not at all combat helpful.

Tier 6: Magical Apprentice Tier

Power is generally superhuman up to building level destruction. Often has low superhuman speed and some form of elemental manipulation. Some Cute Witches who have highly versatile magic but are very weak in terms of raw power are also here. The equivalent of street level in most verses.

Tier 5: Magical Warrior Tier:

Power is generally able to destroy large sections of a city at once. Speed is generally supersonic to some degree, or hypersonic. More versatile elemental manipulation and low levels of hax. Generally far more combat experience then previous tier. In DC and Marvel would be equivalent to Street Tiers.Would be able to destroy a modern army under most circumstances and solo a low-magic medieval fantasy verse.

Tier 4: Magical Champion Tier:

Generally at least a planetary guardian, with powers above city level but below planet level. Speed is generally Hypersonic to Massively Hypersonic. More complex hax starts to accumulate at this level. Can solo the real world and low tier verses, would be equivalent to mid-high tier in the HST.

Tier 3: Princess Tier:

A Cosmic Level entity able to affect planets and star systems, generally with some level of reality-warping and enhanced wisdom. Speed is generally at least MHS, sometimes FTL. Princess Tier Entities are often able to affect higher planes of reality. In Marvel would classify as a low Herald and in DC would be equivalent to strong members of the New 52 Justice League. Would be at least Saiyan Saga in DBZ but generally below Buu Saga.

Tier 2: Queen Tier:

A higher level of cosmic entity of greater wisdom able to casually affect the workings of a star system, often reality-warping it and generally can affect far greater areas of the universe up to the entirety of the universe. Speed is generally FTL or MFTL. Tends to be highly versatile and hax. The Equivalent of a Marvel Skyfather generally.

Tier 1: Magical Girl Goddess Tier:

Power above baseline Universal, has every common form of hax, as well as cosmic awareness. Magical Girl Goddesses can defeat Universal Threats without much difficulty and are true celestial guardians of reality. There is so far Three of them that I know off, Sailor Cosmos, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Kami Madoka.

Here are the equivalent Villain Tiers:

Tier 7: Criminal Tier
Tier 6: Minion Tier
Tier 5: Monster Tier
Tier 4: Monster Lord Tier
Tier 3: Darkness Being Tier
Tier 2: Dark Queen Tier
Tier 1: Dark Goddess Tier

Imp's Top 10 Favorite Magical Girl Themes

Note, this doesn't really have anything to do with how good I find the series. While a lot of good Magical Girl shows have good themes, they are not directly proportional to how good they are. There are some Themes I think are just OK for series I really love like Panty and Stocking and Magic Knight Rayearth. Likewise there are some themes I think are really good for mediocre series.

Also this is just official versions of the theme. While I will take into account the fact that some theme songs have different officials versions I am not including things like covers. That might sound weird but a lot of MG series themes have really great covers.

With that said, kappa hope you like my list

10: The Heart's Egg (Shugo Chara)

Probably the least-well known on this list, I still love The Heart's Egg. It does the whole "happy peaceful sweet-sounding" song a lot of MG Themes, especially early on, making it very cheery and pleasant to listen too. That said it more then any of the others really talks about the specifics and nature of the show, about Amu's insecurity that she is not going to be able to live up to what others see her as and yet is still determined to realize her own dream.

It's also got a lot more of a peppy beat to it and isn't as slow as some of the others which definitely helps.

9: Platinum (Cardcaptor Sakura)

I already loved the first two themes of CCS, but Platinum was able to surpass both of them to my surprise!

It is of a more energetic nature then the first two while still keeping the "lightness" and feel-good nature of the series. It really is a master of the art of giving what you are talking about gravitas and dignity without causing tension or stress to invade the subject matter.

8: Colorful (Puella Magi Madoka Magicka)

Despite only being played once, in the third movie, I love Colorful! If you take the hypothesis that a larger thematic plot, if not the main one in Madoka is the relation between humanity and divinities, then Colorful is the perfect expression of that.

Colorful expresses the sentiment of how our mundane world can seem gray but seeing the magical world we can be in awe at the color and emotion of the world.

7: Miraculous (Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir)

The only one on this list that is not in Japanese...it's in French. This is more so for the official extended version but still.

I don't speak French but this theme song makes me wish I did! It has such a magical....I don't know how to describe it but...atmosphere to it. I love the part where they invoke "lady magic and lady chance!"

I really love all the mystique the song has in it's lyrics and rhythm! It makes it sound really grandiose and draws you in.

6: Morning Grace (Princess Tutu)

I got told by so many people to watch Princess Tutu and yet I only started it recently and uh...they were totally right it's absolutely amazing. It's so beautiful and this theme song fits it perfectly.

Much like the series itself this song is just the absolutely most elegant and graceful thing you could imagine. It makes me want to cry in all the best ways. It's very different from the rest of this list and "anime openings" in general and quite refreshing in that regard.

5: Stars and Flowers (Yuki Yuna is a Hero)

Bit of an unpopular opinion on how much I like this series and it's theme song but I still love this op. Stars and Flowers manages to somehow bridge the happy tranquil style of MG openings and the loud actiony types together, something I haven't seen anywhere else.

I also really like the imagery used in this op, though I imagine for English Speakers that is less something they can notice.

4: Moonlight Legend (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon)

I CAN BE NOSTALGIC IF I WANT TO

No but seriously even without the nostalgia goggles I love Moonlight Densetsu. I love it's whispy atmosphere as if representing meeting a lover in the moonlight. I love it's procession and it's rhythm that are simple yet mysterious like a girl's emotions. I love it's romantic themes, that in this infinite universe, the singer and her beloved being born to the same world is truly a miracle romance. This song puts me in the romantic emotional mood.

3: Honey Flash! (Cutey Honey)

They are all official versions of the same theme so it's totally not cheating riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight?

But yeah Honey Flash! is such a  hype theme, which explains why they make a new version of it for every Cutey Honey Anime. Full of energy, the song promises adventure and magic, as well as with it's breathy ONEGAIIIIIII (Onegai=Please) promises a bit of risque. It's such fun!

Also can I just say it's hilarious putting showing a stereotypical view of what magical girls are the cutey honey theme.

2: Eternal Blaze (Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's)

So uh, the official version gets hit with copyright on youtube so here is basically a cover with the intro images.

If Nanoha is really the mecha in disguise as magical girls as some claim, then Eternal Blaze gives perfect credit to the idea. No theme song has captured the dignity and heart of the magical combat that Eternal Blaze has.

Eternal Blaze is a theme song that makes me want to henshin and soar through the sky with magic blasting the dark forces with my sparkly magic beam.

1: We are Naria Girls! (Naria Girls!)

LOOK AT IT! JUST WITNESS THE PERFECTION!

I had to, I mean got to watch this for 12 episodes! Look all the perfect details! Are you not excited to watch another freaking episode of Naria Girls yet?!

Being serious, the music is the best part of Naria Girls but that is not saying much.

Real Number One Now.

1: DANZEN! Futari was Pretty Cure! (Max Heart)

I already loved the original Futari wa Pretty Cure theme. I did not know they could make it better. This seems to be the most commonly cited best MG theme and uh....yeah I agree.

This op is like fanservice for women. There's cure small things, pretty flowers and jewelry, quasi-romantic friendships, wild flailing and monsters made of hatred and evil led by some kind of big evil overlord you know you will have to overcome with the power of your love, Hearts, Optimism, etc.

There's so much excitement and pomp put into this theme, it's like listening to a rainbow-colored supernova. This theme really is like if you took the MG genre and made it a theme song.

On Negativity in media (A potential suggestion)

This probably won't be a very pretty blog, I haven't really considered what I want to say very much but it's something that I don't understand that a lot of other people do.

There is a saying that goes "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". At face value one can take from this not to insult people, however I take this quote to mean something deeper.

To me, what that is saying is that if nothingness or void is superior to just negativity. I like to think I am a very positive person, and that I come from a very positive society.

There is a mentality I see others have something though that I very literally do not understand. I don't mean that I disagree with it on an abstract level, I mean that I literally do not understand how the psychology of it works.

You probably know what my favorite series is. I talk about it a lot. That is because I think about it a lot. Conversely you probably don't know my most hated series in fiction. That's because I don't like it so I don't try to think about it or talk about it. Thinking about something I hate, makes me sad. To me that seems very intuitive.

Conversely however other people seem to find an enjoyment in talking about things they DON'T like. With some of my friends I know more series they don't like then they do like which seems very strange to me.

Maybe this is caused by my tendency to just avoid things I don't like in general but when I have found the best way of enjoying entertainment is to do your best to avoid consuming or thinking about things you know you don't like. It's also probably the easiest way to avoid getting into angry arguments with other people, which seems to be a massive problem on the internet.

If I am honest there are series I really don't like that some of my friends really like. Some of them probably know I don't like those series. But you know what I don't do. If they are excited about one of the series or trying to talk about them, I don't feel any urge to criticize that series in front of them. I don't feel any urge to criticize a series in general but when it's around someone I know likes the series you couldn't pay me to make any large critique of the series.

This is partially due to my desire to avoid conflict but even more so it comes from the desire to just leave everything to be. My most despised series is you want to know is Mahou Shoujo Isuka. I don't talk about Isuka generally, because no matter how much I don't want to watch I don't feel any desire to make someone feel bad for liking it or even to hate on it in general.

From what I understand in the West, not expressing negative opinions is viewed as repressing yourself and explaining your negative opinions or "venting" is viewed as emotionally cathartic. With all due respect, I don't understand this feeling at all.

I on occasion vent but I feel only marginally better afterwards if that. When I "vent" it's primarily because I am trying to help others who may read it, get them to see a different perspective, etc. I would never try and convince someone that something they liked is bad. I am very open to the inverse, someone to try and convince me something I don't like is good and would hope others would feel the same because to me I want things to be good. I don't get any enjoyment from viewing bad things like I know some people do with The Room or Birdemic. I want things to be good and I would be very happy if someone could convince something I didn't like was good.

That doesn't seem like a very common experience. If you think about a series you hate, are you open to someone convincing you it's actually good? If so, then I want to congratulate you, since to me that seems open-minded and willing to change your mind in light of evidence.

I am not saying this primarily because I don't want to argue about things I like being good or because I want other people to be more like me, I am saying this mostly as a suggestion. A lot of my friends, especially my western friends, seem very often saddened by the state of media, as are a lot of western art critics or reviewers. The negative seems to always be more pressing then the positive. I understand that they view expressing their negative opinions as helpful and maybe they are. Maybe I am just projecting my feelings and cultural values onto them. But the fact that the state of media makes them sad so often suggests to me that I might be able to help them by suggesting they spend less time focusing on things they don't like and arguing that things are not good to people who like them and more on just talking and thinking about things they do like.

Feel free to ignore this suggestion if you want. I hope I haven't caused you any annoyance with this, it was merely spitballing on a difference I saw and hoped that maybe it might brighten up the lives of some people who read it. In all the things I personally really love is is an idealistic optimistic view of humanity as amazing beings, so maybe I am just a bit of a naive romantic optimist. I just thought I could make the suggestion.

On darkness and brightness in fiction

So, a pet peeve of mine lately is people will when describe a series will describe it simply as bright or far more often dark and say nothing else on the matter as if it's self-explanatory. The reason why this is a pet peeve of mine is because I literally do not know what they mean because the terms have been used to describe a variety of unrelated things.

Let's get this out of the way first, bright and dark are not synonyms with good and bad. I like series that are bright and I like series that are dark and I like series that are both. Likewise I dislike series of both. I generally prefer bright series to dark series, but that's just my preference. However the thing is that when I say series that bright and series that are dark, I am using my own definition which seems intuitive compared to the general understanding which seems confused and not demonstrable.

Originally it seemed like people were using bright simply to mean comedic and dark to simply mean serious. This is very clearly not though what bright or dark mean either literally or intuitively. We can all understand easy the idea of something being darkly comedic, and if you thing of stereotypical "inspirational motivation" videos it's pretty easy to imagine something that is bright and serious.

See when I say a series is bright or a series or dark what I am talking about is the themes and the worldview of the series. A bright series is a series that is optimistic or hopeful in it's themes and worldview. Does it portray humans or other special as generally noble and competent or does it portray them as generally as ignoble and incompetent? When bad things happen, do people act like heroes or unheroic? Does our common humanity bind us or divide us?

To me that seems only intuitive, that a bright series is one with a bright worldview, and a dark series is one with a dark worldview. Some examples with some series that are pretty umabigious between my understanding and the common understanding.

Cardcaptor Sakura: Highly bright, there are no true villains in the series, everyone has a good center deep down, and problems can always be solved

LittleBigPlanet: The Imagination has unlimited power, and our ability to create will and imagine save us from depression

On the other side of things

Cthulhu Mythos: Highly dark, humanity is pointless, everything is the mad dream of a sleeping montrosity at the center of existence that the next strongest beings are trying to keep from waking up, humans are basically selfish irrational weak creatures

Dead Space: Not quite as dark as above because humanity has more control and agency but similar to above humanity is just another species to fall to the Markers and the Necromorphs

Yet I have seen a half-dozen series already that I really love and I consider bright be considered dark, and more specifically bad (and sometimes dangerous) because they are dark and I have no idea what people mean by that. If I was to look into my 6 favorite series, CCS is clearly bright, and 5 of them I consider bright series (the exception being Magicka), but I legitimately have no idea how bright or dark people would consider most of them. Take Sailor Moon for instance. What happens in the Manga of Sailor Moon for instance:

In the ancient past we learn of the destruction of the beautiful peaceful kingdoms of the Silver Millenium. A demon queen of darkness awakens again and causes all of Earth to be plunged into savagery. Also Minako literally kills Beryl by shanking her with a radioactive holy sword. And at one point Usagi is forced to kill her true love Prince Endymion and commits suicide.

That's the first arc! By the fifth arc we have learned of Sailor Chaos who will destroy the cosmos beyond repair and will never be destroyed continuing to plague the universe with evil and suffering for all eternity.

Is Sailor Moon dark? It got called too dark for young girls back in the 90s but is it really? The Themes of Sailor Moon are as bright as you can imagine, that love and the bonds between people will never die, can never be destroyed, and that someone who loves the cosmos can save it from the greatest evils. I take the fact that it was willing to show such events to teen girls as a sign it trusted them to be able to handle mature themes.

It seems like people are using "dark" to mean the depiction of bad things happening to people, just, in general. And to me that seems counter-intuitive. The depiction of negative things is...necessary for story to occur. I would imagine the reaction to negative things, the depiction of people's ability to fight them is what makes something bright not dark. In fact the highest the negative occurrence, theoretically, the greater the ability needed to stop it.

Thing about all this is, bright and dark are not even generally helpful descriptors of what a series is like, and often like here it creates confusion, false assumptions are needless semantically argumentation. If you are going to say something is bright or dark explain what about it makes it bright or dark, but for the most part you don't even have to, just explain why you like or don't like something. I really just can't stand what I view as out-dated criticisms like "cheesy" or "edgy" (which I view as being opposites) because they don't really tell me anything about the series in question. Talk about characters, or plot, or themes, or anything substantial, please.

How they compare: Time Master

Spoilers for Freedom Force.

A genius doctor from another timeline, Time Master was paranoid of his own mortality and sought to prevent it for as long as possible with whatever he could until he discovered the Celestial Clock, the beating heart of the universe and the source of all time and causation. Gaining dominion over it, Time Master became the greatest threat to reality as he sought to stop the end of the universe, himself included, the heat death of the universe by ending all progression of time. He is the most feared entity in the universe, even the Alien Empire of Lord Dominion which has conquered all the universe but Earth and has mastery over energy x, the source of all metahuman powers, dare not trifle with him.

Time Master is gargantuan, easily as large as buildings and capable of causing the ground to shake and damage to the street with merely his walking. But his true power is on a cosmic scale.

Time Master's power is great enough to threaten even the Celestial Clock, the heart of the universe that is the cause of all time in all realities and the procession of causation. During the sequel, the Chaos Witch Hero Alchemiss steals part of Time Master's power and the resulting power is so great as to turn her into Entropy, the Embodiment of Chaos in the multiverse itself, capable of warping the multiverse with her sheer presence.

The Freedom Force, the Superhero Team of this universe desperately summons Time Master to battle Entropy herself, and the two are able to evenly match each other, able to damage each other with their strikes and their power seemingly even, with Time Master seeming to overpower Entropy at the end (though she uses her chaos powers to win by switching the possible and impossible).

Time Master has a number of powers, mostly related to space and time. He can change his size at will. He can shoot energy beams which freeze what it hits in time, and can freeze beings in time with simply a gesture. He can fire a beam of pure energy X, the highly unstable energy that is the source of all metahuman powers, and can create a spacetime rift at will.

Time Master has also teleported in the Freedom Force base despite it's defenses against that exact thing, has sent a city block back to the Mesozoic Era, and can create clones of himself from other moments of time or from alternate reality versions of himself.

He can freely enter or exit the timestream (the linear flow of time) at will, and bring others with him. On the other hand he was also able to pull Entropy, the Multiversal Chaos Warper into a single timeline and lock her inside it and when she haxed him, he was able to escape by "fleeing through time" to the time of her being weaker after being beaten by Freedom Force. He also has slight regenerative abilities.

However he is even stronger in his own domain, the Celestial Clock. Time Master can access it at any time and bring others there as well. There, Time Master has access and knowledge of all timelines at once, complete awareness and control over all realities. The Celestial Clock is also inhabited and generates horrible wraiths which convert most things (though not Time Master) that they touch into horrible chaos entities or drain their life-energy until they are nothing.

How would Time Master do in other verses?

In the DC Universe, Time Master would be approximately equal to the Lords of Order and Chaos or Anti-Monitor and would fittingly qualify as a Pre-Crisis Crisis Level Event. It would take the Pre-Crisis Justice League all together to fight him. He would be weaker then a high level God like Darkseid or Highfather should they choose to physically incarnate, but especially in the Celestial Clock it's possible he could slow them drastically to allow other entities to stop him.

In the Marvel Universe, Time Master would be roughly comparable to the Celestials or Galactus in terms of raw power and be a viable threat to the Abstracts like Infinity, Eternity and so forth who would be comparable to Entropy in Freedom Force. If he was in the Celestial Clock it is possible he would be able to even overcome them. It would take one of the supreme powers then to stop him

In the Saint Seiya Universe, Time Master would be a threat comparable to the Primordials and which even very high tier gods like Athena, Apollo, or Hades would be unlikely able to defeat. That said the strongest entities of the verse like Zeus or the Primordials would likely be able to evenly fight him one-on-one especially if he is outside the Celestial Clock and if he tries to fight more then one at a time, he would almost certainly lose.

In the Doctor Who verse, Time Master would be comparable to the hyper-advanced civilizations such as the Eternals in both raw power and mastery of time, however it is highly unlikely he could survive the strongest weapons in the verse such as the Reality-Bomb which is capable of destroying an entire multiverse.

In the Transformers Universe, Time Master would be roughly equivalent to God Entities such as Primus and Unicorn. It would be possible for him to solo anyone in the verse by drawing them into the Celestial Clock, however it would be highly doubtful for him to be able to normally given the number of these entities and number of abilities these entities have.

In the Cthulhu Mythos would register far above the titular Cthulhu in terms of power. He would be stronger then any archetype, a universe-transcendent entity capable of surviving the voice of Yog-Sogoth which has more force then the collisions of universes. He has vastly more power then one of the Great Old Ones, and would likely be comparable to the Elder Gods in terms of power. That said he would be absolutely nowhere close to the Outer Gods and his spacetime powers wouldn't affect them anyway.

The problem of "infinite" in versus debating

This blog is not meant as an attack against any person, or any verse, or any site, though it may be taken as an attack against any of them and is not intended as one of them. This is a plea for a mathematically consistent view of infinity.

There seems to be a misunderstanding that infinity x infinity = something else. In some cases this is hidden more. “A multiverse contains infinite universe, and a megaverse contains infinite multiverses so therefore a megaverse is infinitely larger then a multiverse and a megaversal is infinitely stronger then a multiverse” or “An infinite 5-dimensional cosmos is infinitely larger then an infinite 4-dimensional cosmos and so a 5D being is infinitely stronger then a 4D being”

Ok, let’s go over some basic terms first. “Infinity” is not a number. “Infinity” is an abstract concept denoting a never-ending nature. There is a set of numbers called infinite numbers, which are defined as being larger then any finite number. Next, let me talk about the concept of cardinality. Take the set of [Banana, Apple, Orange]. This set has 3 items and so it has a cardinality of 3. Take the set of [John, Tim, and Drake]. This set also has 3 items. Set Theory also says that two sets with same cardinality are the same size. You can also have cardinality in a set of numbers. [1, 7, 9] has a cardinality of 3. [1, 2, 3] also has a cardinality of 3.

Now let’s take the set [All Counting Numbers] or in other words the set of [1,2,3,4,5…]. What is the cardinality of this set? The cardinality is what is called Aleph-Null. Aleph-Null, or “countable infinity” is the set of “and so on”, the set of things that you can order forever. While it’s endless technically, you can go to any arbitrarily high amount you want in theory. Aleph-Null is in fact a number. It can be used in arithmetic formula, though it has some very unintuitive results. To explain this let me introduce my good friend Hilbert.

Hilbert has a hotel. This hotel has Aleph-Null rooms and every single one is full. Let’s say 1 person comes by and wants a room. Hilbert says “no problem” and moves every single person in every room up 1 and puts the new person in room 1. Aleph-Null + 1 = Aleph-Null. As you might imagine same works with subtraction. If that person leaves everyone is moved to their room down 1.
Now let’s say a bus comes in. This bus is an “Infinity” brand bus. “Infinity” brand Buses boast an Aleph-Null seats, and each one on this bus is full. Hilbert sees this and moves everyone to their room times 2 and puts each person in the odd-numbered rooms. Aleph-Null times 2 = Aleph-Null. This shows that the cardinality of all even numbers is equal to the cardinality of all numbers. I know this is highly counterintuitive. But it is objectively true. Aleph-Null times 2 = Aleph-Null.

What if Aleph-Null of “Infinity” buses comes in, each one full? Surely Hilbert’s Hotel cannot possibly accommodate this right? Well Hilbert, being a clever man numbers each bus and numbers each seat in each bus. Let’s call the Bus number B, and the Seat number S. He then moves each person to room 2^B * 3^S. Each number has a unique prime factorization, a set of prime numbers that multiplies to reach it. Because of that each possible combination gives a unique room number. In conclusion Aleph-Null * Aleph-Null or Aleph-Null^2 equals Aleph-Null.

Since there are Aleph-Null prime numbers you can raise Aleph-Null to as high a power as you want. 2^A * 3^B * 5^C or 2^A * 3^B * 5^C * 7^D etc.

In other words, Aleph-Null^Aleph-Null = Aleph-Null.

There are ways to create higher infinities, but that is not it. Cardinalities don’t work get bigger by adding or multiplying like that.

The thing that took me forever to learn is that space CAN’T be higher cardinalities. Aleph-null is the biggest a physical space can be. If something is arranged into a coordinate of points, then by necessity it is ordered and countable thus Aleph-0. The whole idea of megaverses of infinite multiverses of infinite universes or of dimensions being infinitely larger just doesn’t make sense.

Now I know some smart guy is probably thinking of “what about the ordinals”, fine fine clever guy though if you know about ordinal numbers you really should already know the problem with that.
Ordinal numbers are basically taking numbers that don’t add on to a set because they are not part of a set. It’s like taking the set of [Counting Numbers, Pi]. Counting numbers are an Aleph-Null sized set but Pi isn’t part of it. This is designed as Omega + 1. You can also make other Omega Sets such as Omega + 2, Omega + 3, Omega times 2, Omega^2, Omega^Omega etc. And these are all technically different numbers. That said while there are different NUMBERS they all have the same CARDINALITY, the same VALUE, which is Aleph-Null.

So let’s take the final problem presented, which is that “sure it doesn’t TECHNICALLY make mathematical sense, but come on, fiction breaks rules all the time, how is this different then people moving faster than light?”

To explain that I need to explain the difference between irrational and illogical. “Irrational” means contradictory to reality, while “Illogical” means contradictory to itself.

Fiction is very often irrational, and we can accept that just fine. See the thing is versus debates are hypotheticals, they aren’t arguments about what are but about what if this hypothetical reality was existent.

Something being Illogical is something you absolutely can not discuss. Nothing, not even a hypothetical can contradict logic, because contradicting logic means not meaning anything at all. If you grant an illogical statement then you can prove literally anything:

A logician was famously asked “given 0=1, prove you are the pope” and he said “add 1 to both sides and you get 1=2, the pope and I are two people, therefore we are one person. I am the pope.”
Saying an illogical phrase like “0=1” or “a rock so big an omnipotent can’t lift” or “a triangle circle” isn’t saying anything at all. They are as meaningful as saying glxtbnm. It’s a string of sounds but doesn’t refer to any hypothetical concept. Saying a number is greater then itself is illogical since it contradicts it’s own definition.

Saying that the space this character destroyed is aleph-null times larger then aleph-null is like two characters being able to release 1 megaton of force, but the story trying to insist one megaton is somehow larger. At best it’s unquantifiable and at worst it’s unusable.

If a character destroys an infinite area, then you should be very cautious that it is actually infinite and not a hyperbole because an infinite area of space is as large an area of space as you can possibly have.

Expanded 10-Point Rating System

Revised 10-Point Schedule:

So, I generally rate things out of 5, and I will still continue to use that system, but I wanted to create an expanded 10 point system so I can give greater specificity people want.

I want to say quickly people don’t seem to understand that average is middle. Most things rate a 5 or
6. Those are average. Average is not 8, and 10 is not just really good. That’s not using the scale to full efficiency.

Let me start by re-iterating my 5 point scale.

1/5: Terrible. I wish I didn’t see this. This actively puts me in an unpleasant mood. I would never recommend this. If someone I know really likes this then I will try and never bring it up because I would have trouble finding good things to say and I don’t want to hurt their feelings.

2/5: Poor. Usually this happens when I find a series just boring or dull. If I find something blandly not offensive, am not unhappy that I saw it but wouldn’t want to see any more, then it would be here. I would only recommend this if I think it’s REALLY up someone else’s aisle. Can also happen when there is a series that is often pretty decent but has some really bad parts.

3/5: Average. Most often this is a series that is enjoyable enough to watch once, and that I might consider myself a casual fan of, but that won’t make that much of an impression on me. The alternative is when a series has some really good parts but is seriously mixed with parts that are just hard to get through to get to the good stuff. I would recommend this to someone who enjoys the subgenre this is part of.

4/5: Good. These series I generally consider myself a fan of and am in the fandom of. They are enjoyable to watch once and I will think about a significant amount afterwards. I might watch them again later after some time has passed or I am watching with someone else. If a series is fine for the most part but has at least a few things it does REALLY well it can get here. I would recommend this to someone who enjoys the genre this is part of.

5/5: Amazing. Absolutely wonderful, I want to watch again and again, I think about them a lot afterwards and they change my view on what is good and enjoyable. This actively puts me in a good mood. I would recommend to anyone.

So, let me give an expanded 10 point scale in case it’s helpful.

1/10: Atrocious. Almost no series ever gets this, and the worst series almost never have a single instance of this. This is the level where I feel physically angry, that makes me actively upset. Can only really happen when there is nothing even remotely to be redeemed about it.

2/10: Irritating. Generally, things here are just annoying. Like it doesn’t make me angry, but it’s just irritating or sometimes just gross. Generally, there is nothing good about a 2/10, but unlike a 1/10, it’s not harmful or otherwise distasteful it’s just unpleasant thoroughly. Again, this is pretty rare, you have to almost be trying to be bad to have such little good about it.

3/10: Boring. Most series here are super forgettable or dull. I generally don’t think about these at all afterwards because they are just so…generic or otherwise dull. It’s not irritating to me like a 2/10 but it’s not something I particularly want to watch even to get closure.

4/10: Eh. Things here tend to be very much not to my taste but unlike a 3/10 will have some parts I actually do like. They are not things I think about a lot after, but they are not so dull or cliché to watch because there is at least parts I find interesting, usually the parts where they actually try and have a genuine heartfelt message.

5/10: Poorer side of Average. Series is decent enough to hold my attention but it’s not particularly good at anything, just basically competent at enough to be a decent series. Different from a 4/10, these series are not boring enough to make me want to turn it off at any point, but it is hard to make myself continue the series.

6/10: Better side of Average. Series is enjoyable and was engaging enough that I did want to watch each episode after I finish one. It’s different from a 5/10 because either it does someone thing particularly well to distinguish itself or it’s at least more unique and unlike other things, even if it wasn’t that much more engaging. 6/10 is the dividing line between don’t want to pay for it versus would pay a diminished amount for it (like a rental or a sale).

7/10: Pleasant. Series is enjoyable for most of the time, has some strengths, but also has significant problems and weaknesses that would need to be talked about. Series is perfectly watchable but not something I’d want to marathon. Series is something I would pay for full price. 7/10 is different from 6/10 because it goes from generally mixed, to good with some significant bad parts.

8/10: Very Good. Series has parts it excels at, and is something that I want to keep watching one episode after another. I would consider myself a serious fan of an 8/10 and would use it as example of good writing at parts.  An 8/10 is different then a 7/10 because a 7/10 is thoroughly enjoyable but an 8/10 is that and also has something that it specifically excels at and has a strength compared to all of fiction as a whole.

9/10: Great. One of the Greats. A series that is a modern classic. There has been a total of 5 franchises that average at 9/10. Most series are lucky to have a single episode, or chapter, or level that is a 9/10. A 9/10 is good enough that I want to model my own writing on it at part. It’s different then an 8/10 because while an 8/10 excels at a few things, a 9/10 excels at many things. I think about 9/10s often and they change my opinion of what makes a work good.

10/10: Life-Changing. I think about this all the time. A 10/10 isn’t something that changes what I think about what makes a work good, it changes my whole view on life. 9/10 series’ best moments are generally 10/10, and so far, there has been exactly 1 series that has ever been a 10/10. To me a 10/10 isn’t just good, it’s something that I have big emotional breakdowns towards, that I want to not just write like, but think like, be like. These are even more rare then 1/10.

So yeah, I can assess anything on this 10 point scale if you want. I can assess series, or instances, or moments or experiences, etc.

Who would win Death Battle Royale of the Anime Guardian Senshi

This is my attempt to gain some outside opinions on who would win in a DB fight Battle Royale between the 4 Guardian Senshi; Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus. You may recall that I made a battle royale death prediction however that was meant to be a realistic depiction of their canonical selves.
It is very clear that DB will be using a strange composite and most likely focusing on Sailor Moon Classic, the first anime. This is…. unfortunate given the lack of consistency in the 90s anime, although if you ignore scaling, the Sailor Moon Classic Guardians are fairly low power, closer to consistently street level then on the cosmic scale of their manga counterparts. Given the sheer complexity of this fight I thought I’d get some outside opinions. Of course, most people haven’t seen the 200 episodes of the anime and the 3 movies. As such I wanted to quickly list some of the best feats of the Classic Anime Senshi. However, because DB doesn’t use scaling I won’t including scaling which REAlly nerfs them. This is basically their best personal classic anime feats. This is what DB would likely use and what casuals would probably think of as their best feats.

Joint Feats:

Let’s begin with what powers and feats the Senshi possess collectively. This brings up a certain problem, the Senshi together have durability feats way above their personal feats. This includes surviving within some kind of black hole (72), described as a tear in space time and a hole between dimensions. They also survive an attack that was describing as lifewiping the Earth (88) and in their super form were able to take a city-sized explosion from the Golden Crystal (165) which literally 4 episodes go was described as being able to destroy stars and violently destroyed a planet on screen (161). Given their attacks would have no chance of scratching that and yet they do anyway…

It’s kind of a problem. I suppose the way DB would try and justify this is by saying it’s their personal forcefields that they can briefly maintain and so a fight between the senshi would be in part a test of stamina as they try and wear each other down. If that sounds really weird, it is. It’s kinda like scaling is actually important or something. They were also able to survive outer space (44), absolute zero temperatures (39) and resisted the knockout gas of Telulu (121).

In terms of speed, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus were able to get inside a market faster then people there were able to notice suggesting subsonic speed in order to help Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars (66). In their super forms the Senshi were able to dodge a cannonball at close range (130), suggesting supersonic reflexes, possibly movement speed.

Mercury Tactical Analysis:
+Smartest
+Ultimate Attack can bfr which none of the others can protect against with their manga teleportation
+Can still act while paralyzed
+Shabon Spray can obscure her position
+Mercury Computer lets her track the position of all the others
-Freezing is gonna barely slow the others down since they resisted the absolute zero of Kunzite’s winds
-Shabon Spray’s Knockout ability wouldn’t work since the others resisted the knockout gases of Telulu
-Physically Weakest
-Timid and more easily intimidated

Mars Tactical Analysis:
+Paralysis can one-shot Jupiter and Venus and cripple Mercury and she can use lots at once
+Psionics and Intuition can guide her through the chaos (and hearing)
+Extremely accurate ultimate attack could be a one-shot if it lands
+Seems to have the greatest range in the anime
-Her Anger is exploitable by more cool-headed opponents
-Not as good at close range as Jupiter and Venus

Jupiter Tactical Analysis:
+Most Durable and Most Stamina
+Best at Close Range
+Long-Range Attacks are at least comparable in danger
+Most skilled fighter
-Most direct in both powers and mindset
-Doesn’t have any guaranteed one-hit KOs

Venus Tactical Analysis:
+Has the best spammable attack, Crescent Beam Shower, which can attack lots of protectiles at once, with the only comparable power being the Rei’s Ofuda and Rei can’t spam those like Minako since she has a limited amount
+Kick Strength would be heavily dangerous
+Technically most experience
+Most Unpredictable
+Most Agile
-Attacks don’t seem to have as much raw power as Jupiter and Mars
-Lazy

So yeah, who do you think would win? I really don’t know.
