Top 10 Magical Girl Death Battles DB could do

Note: This is not the same thing, though there is a link, as the Magical Girl Death Battles I would most want to see. These are the best death battles involving two or more magical girls that I would think would work well for Death Battle purposes. This involves 3 metrics basically:

1: How well it would capture attention. In needs to be able to capture the attention of casuals I know. Generally there are 3 A Tier Magical Girl series in terms of well known-ness; Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Puella Magi Madoka Magicka. There's also a lot of B Tier Popularity MG series known to a large amount like Pretty Cure, Tokyo Mew Mew, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Kill la Kill, Panty and Stocking etc. Thus a fight should probably have at least one magical girl from an A Tier in popularity, or both to be from a B or higher tier in popularity. This is based on the English speaking fandom rather then the Japanese speaking fandom.

2: How hard it would be to research. A series should ideally be on the shorter side. The feats should be clear and not require much interpretation or conjecture.

3: How good the fight presents itself to an episode. Matchups should be fair and interesting, with character personalities and powersets that would interact in interesting ways and which gives Wiz and Boomstick things to comment on for the pre-battle analysis sections. If I was just giving the MG Ideas I'd want DB to do, this would be the only category, but the others are presented for for the sake of pragmaticism.

Some of these matchups don't have all 3 of these. This is my best attempt to maximize all 3.

Matchup 10: Majokko Club Battle Royale

Number 10 just because it scores really low on the first category. Most people don't know these 4, I get that and that's why it's last place. However in both of the other categories I think it scores pretty well.

In the 80s Studio Pierrot was to Magical Girl Anime what Hanna Barbera was to western animation in the 70s, ultra-prolific and downright puritanical in morals. They had 4 magical girls; Creamy Mami (a magical idol singer whose singing warped reality), Persia the Magic Fairy (a jungle girl with a magic baton that allows her to use magical love energy), Magical Emi (a stage magician who uses real magic to boost her magic acts), and Pastel Yumi (a little girl whose drawings come to life). In 1987 Pierrot brought them together for the first magical girl teamup to fight a 4th dimension alien on the moon.

Given that movie gives them all a super form formed from their friendship, their stats should be really even meaning the winner will be basically just their magical tricks, mundane skills and creativity. They've all done really crazy wacky silver-age comic book styled shenanigans yet are pretty easy to actually interpret. None of the series are that long (Creamy Mami is the longest at 52 episodes) and the 4's personalities already canonically mesh in funny ways, as would their powers. Still easily the least likely and lowest just due to obscurity outside the MG fandom.

Matchup 9: Wedding Peach vs Cure Happy
Still not very well known but we're getting a lot better. Wedding Peach is still relatively well known for a magical girl series. Cure Happy is maybe not the most POPULAR MG Lead in the Pretty Cure Fandom but there's not much hate against her, and Smile PreCure! is probably one of the most well known pretty cure in the English Fandoms (alongside the original and Heartcatch) due to the infamous Glitter Force English Dub on Netflix. Wedding Peach is really easily to research albeit there is a few things tricky to interpret. Researching all of Pretty Cure would be awful, but you really only need to research Smile PreCure for Cure Happy which is not bad at all.

Momoko is a ditzy over-emotional girl prone to dramatic reactions who likes to spend her free time watching wedding videos. Her mom disappeared when she was young, only for her to discover in her teenage years that her mother was an angel, and she becomes the Angelic Guardian of Love Wedding Peach. Mizuki is  super energy, excitable and optimistic girl obsessed with fairy tales. She is approached by beings telling her fairy tales are real and she needs to become a protecting of happy endings, the leader of Smile PreCure Cure Happy! Both of them are idealistic emotional girls with romantic girly hobbies. The personality interactions between the two would likely be funny on that basis and there are funny things to comment about for both series.

The two are in the same general power level (FTL Planet-Large Planet Level). Cure Happy is a little bit stronger but Wedding Peach has a bit more versatility in her arsenal. It seems like the two would have a pretty interesting fight.

Not a great matchup idea but I think a pretty alright one all around.

Matchup 8: Diana Cavendish vs Karin Miyoshi
Both characters are from relatively well known magical girl series; Little Witch Academia and Yuki Yuna is a Hero. Both of these are (spoilers) girls who had immense pressure put on them from a young age to be the best of their class of magical girl, rose to the top of their discipline but became cold and aloof at first, and gradually warmed and became friends with the others. They have pretty similar character arcs is what I'm saying.

I've heard interpretations of LWA at either City or Multi-Continent. Given that Karin is City in base and Moon in her super form that actually works out nicely. The two have some interesting power dynamics due to the relation of Diana's magic haxes versus Karin's fairy protections.

Additionally their personalities would pretty instantly bristle at each other and be entertaining. Both series are pretty short and easy to watch quickly. LWA's main anime is 25 episodes and Yuki Yuna is a Hero's separate series add up to also being 25 episodes.

Matchup 7: Mew Pudding vs Mako Mankanshoku
This one would just be amusing. Both of these two are comical goofy characters who are big fans of the other girls on their team. Tokyo Mew Mew is relatively well known for a traditional style Magical Girl series and Kill la Kill is quite popular.

The two gives lot of material for Wiz and Boomstick to comment on, I imagine given their often humorous antics. Tokyo Mew Mew is only 27 chapters, and 52 episodes if you add in the anime. Kill la Kill is only 24 episodes.

The two are actually pretty even surprisingly enough. The only thing I'd worry about is their powersets might be a bit too...simple. Having an easy to explain powerset is good for the analysis obviously but limits what can be done with the fight animation. Still I think they have enough, especially how the two will likely be goofing each other during it to fill a runtime.

Matchup 6: Mimori Togo vs Hayate Yagami
You want to get some attention, this match will certainly get controversy! No but seriously both of these girls have some personality similarities and SPOILERS lost the usage of their legs due to magic involvement outside of their awareness only to later regain them, though they still helped while wheelchair bound.

Nanoha is a bit long a series, but not too bad and as mentioned above Yuki Yuna is a Hero is basically just 25 episodes long with all the series. Fight between the two is pretty interesting as well as it's basically raw power and fairy defenses vs versatility and speed.

Matchup 5: Satsuki Kiryuin vs Stocking Anarchy
We've moved into the fights that actually get asked for, so you know it's got to have at least a fair level of the first metric.

Stocking vs Satsuki actually seems relatively even, and the two are fairly thematic for each other. Their personalities would certainly clash well given Satsuki's extremely dramatic and dignified personality and Stocking's apathetic goth stark. Their powers are well balanced for a death battle, being simple and quick enough to explain while allowing for creativity in the fight animation.

Kill La Kill is only 24 episodes and Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is only 13 episodes for the main anime. Would be a pretty easy episode to make relatively speaking.

Matchup 4: Fate Testarossa vs Ryuko Matoi
Popularity level of this one I imagine would be somewhat similar to the last one, and Nanoha is a bit harder series to research then Panty and Stocking (even if interpretation of it is easier due to it being all math-y and science-y as opposed to Panty and Stocking's toon physics). That said just the interaction between these two would be amazing.

While both are charactized by their poor and violent relationship with their mothers, Fate is a noble knightly individual who is politely spoken, believes in ettiquette in combat, and generally acts superheroic-ly. In contrast Ryuko is aggressive, informal and hot-blooded. Their interaction would very funny just by itself. In addition, Fate's a canonical lesbian and given her characterization in some parts of the series, her reaction to Ryuko's outfit would probably be great. The two would also give Wiz and Boomstick plenty to talk about.

Fight wise it's basically Fate's hax vs Ryuko's raw power and could probably be debated either way.

Matchup 3: Sailor Moon vs Cardcaptor Sakura
This is my most wanted matchup of all. The two most famous magical girls worldwide without exception, and the two strongest. Power of Love vs Power of Hope. Both have a manifold powerset that can allow for any number of possible fight scenarios, filled with counters to each others' powers. The representative of the Magical Girl Warrior vs The representative of the Cute Witch Magical Girl, the two biggest subgenres of magical girls. 2 of my favorite characters ever. So many things that they could possibly comment on, so many ways either could win and plenty of arguments for either. A fight taking place on the street level and the cosmic level and every level in between.

There are so many things I could say for this fight. It could be great in every respect once it was made, and would almost have to be. It would also attract lots of attention. That said there's one bit of a problem: it would be an absolute b*tch to research.

The original manga are not too bad: SM is 60 chapters long and CCS is 52 chapters long. However Sailor Moon has a bunch of side stories but way worse if you're compositing it has lots of versions, all of them pretty substantial in themselves, including the 200 episode 90s anime. Meanwhile CCS is canon to the rest of the CLAMP multiverse (where literally EVERY CLAMP series is canon and connected) and in fact Sakura's best feats come form Movie 2 and from Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicles, TRC being one of the famously convoluted and hard to understand things ever written (if you're a comic fan, think Donna Troy's backstory and you'll get the idea). The difficulty in actually researching it is why it's only number 3 but it's still my most wanted fight.

Matchup 2: Mami Tomoe vs Panty Anarchy
I think Mami vs Panty is good on all 3 metrics.

It would attract lots of attention, both series are fairly well known and both have big fandoms and are somewhat controversial. Both Mami and Panty are fairly well known.

Both are pretty easy to research. Both have a short anime series and some extra manga. Madoka also has the movie Rebellion. And that's about it for both of them, outside of a few little guidebook statements.

The two would provide for lots of great opportunities for an ep. They both have lots of things to comment on, and really strong personalities that are not only strongly opposed, but actually form the basis of their weaknesses. In fact both have personalities well suited to exploiting the weaknesses of each other in terms of personality. A fight between them should be pretty even and their powers I think would make for a very interesting discussion on who'd win. It's very debatable without being too complex.

Matchup 1: Guardian Senshi Battle Royale
It's pretty clear Sailor Moon is the most well known Magical Girl series, and the 4 Guardian Senshi are 4 of the strongest personalities this genre has ever produced, to the point that they became the new Magical Girl archtypes, basically all of the magical girl warrior series after  deliberately copied the persona of some of the Sailor Senshi. Each of the Sailor Senshi possesses her own micro fanbase and using them will pretty much inevitably have a draw.

The Guardian Senshi are significantly easier to research then Sailor Moon due to the simpler powersets they possess, especially if one is just going off the canonical manga. They are a lot easier to interpret.

You could make a fair argument for any of the Guardian Senshi to win. Like the Majokko Club Battle Royale it's almost canonically even, but here they also benefit of having different stats as well, just not so different that it becomes one-sided. Each Guardian Senshi possesses her own flavor of personality and combat style providing for a lot of potential in both pre-combat analysis and in the actual combat.

Overall the Guardian Senshi Battle Royale has a versatility none of the other fights on the list have. It can be done in many different styles, and for many different types of episode slot. There are so many ways it could be approached that would work just because of how base-archetypal the 4 are.

  1. Death Battle take note! Could really use some representatives of this famous genre on the show. Lotta great fight ideas here Imp; if I had to pick three I'd choose Sailor Moon vs Cardcaptor Sakura, Fate vs Ryuuko and Pudding vs Mako. The Sailor Moon one most of all for sure. I see you saying that it would be difficult/time-consuming to research but I think it's still got a great chance of being on the show some day. SM is the only one of the Big Three famous anime in the West that hasn't been featured on Death battle, the other two being Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z (both having 3+ DB episodes). I know the trickier side to research is Sakura but if they can handle comic book characters with literally decades and decades of material, I have faith they could pull it off. Of course, it'd be tough to top your written version of this battle ;)

Fate and Ryuuko both come from some of the most hot-blooded magical girl series I've seen and I really dig their personalities and weapons so that'd be guaranteed to be one of my fave DB episodes if it happened. And Mako vs Pudding would be HILARIOUS! It's one of those great fights that can be both an actual proper debate and a joke episode, keeping the audience laughing during the action. And don't worry about the fight being too straightforward or the powersets being too simple; some of my favorite Death Battles fall under that sort of category (Balrog vs TJ Combo comes to mind).

As for the other fights, only #10 I can't really comment on. I have my doubts your Mami vs Panty fight could be beat and I'm just getting to know Tougou, who is really flippin' cool so that would be great too. And I'm always down for something involving Satsuki! The long and short of it is, I think these are all great ideas but the three I mentioned in my first paragraph are the ones I'd be most excited for. Thanks for the blog, fingers crossed for one or more of these to be a reality some day!

  2. I can see matches 1, 2, 3, and maybe 5 happening in Death Battle. The other ones are probably a little too obscure for Western audiences for DB to consider, unfortunately. Just from their descriptions though, I would like to see 1, 3, 4, 8, and 10.
