During the 2004 popularity poll of Saint Seiya characters, Dragon Shiryu came first before immensely popular characters like Phoenix Ikki or Gemini Saga and before the protagonist Pegasus Seiya. I believe this is partialy because while every other character in Saint Seiya fights for personal reasons, whether good or ill, Shiryu is one who truly lives for justice,
to protect the weak and innocent. In a classic 80s battle shonen filled with hot-blooded characters, Shiryu is the most mature, wise, and level-headed, the one who truly embodies the idea of a Saint, one who fights purely for justice's sake rather than any personal vendetta. The reason he is often blinded in his fights is a reference to the notion that justice is blind, it is wise and without prejudices based on appearances reflected by Shiryu's ability to "see" without seeing, immune to illusions and false appearances.
In their own ways, each of the four Bronze Clothes that Seiya befriends models a trait he would need as a Saint; devotion for Hyoga, compassion for Shun, and power for Ikki. However, what Shiryu demonstrates is arguably the defining trait for the entire series; willpower in the pursuit of justice. Befitting one chosen of the Libra constellation, Shiryu is able to calmly and maturely take in information, without compromising his ideals and faithfulness to the cause of justice. In the Hades Arc when Shiryu returns to Sanctuary to fight the Sanctuary Dohko reprimands him,
asking if he doesn't understand love, that Athena knows she and the Gold Saints are likely to perish in this battle and Athena in her love was trying to spare the Bronze Saints that battle, asking if he can't just accept a quiet life with Shunrei's love. However Shiryu refuses and continues to try to fight Aries Shion along his master, even as he is beaten down.
Shiryu explains to Dohko that a Saint is what he is, that telling him to not fight for justice is the same as telling him to kill himself because he can't turn his back on his comrades and continue to live. Dohko relents and agrees to fight with Shiryu, saying he will personally beg Athena's forgiveness on Shiryu's behalf. This is perhaps the only time in the entire series that the wise old master Dohko is wrong, and it's because even he could not see how deep the quest for justice goes down to Shiryu's soul, that he can't just live peacefully because to abandon his quest is the same as to spiritually die.
For most heroes in Saint Seiya, and indeed it seems most series, nobility and ideals are virtues to aspire to, but not the character's natural orientation. For Shiryu, however, they are the stuff of life, that which he persists on. They are the animating components of his soul, lived in his actions. It is the source of their many crippling tragedies Shiryu has faced as he sacrifices himself for others; it is why he gave of his own blood to restore the Pegasus and Dragon Cloths, why he blinded himself to fight Algol, why he refused to abandon the fight against Deathmask when he had the chance, why he tried to sacrifice himself against Shura. Yet just as the spiritual transcends over the physical, giving it meaning, no matter how much damage Shiryu takes, he remains standing. It was his willingness to sacrifice himself that finally convinced Shura that the Bronze Saints were really serving the true Athena and his true strength of character that allowed him to overcome Cancer Deathmask. Shiryu is a representation of the true meaning of a Saint, someone whose ideals are not just a detached virtue to reach, but are shown in their every action, where goodness and justice are truly not things they do but something they live.

Naofumi Iwatani (Rising of the Shield Hero):
Two Heroes that are known for their shield above all else, entering the world's strongest turtling match. End of Web Novel Naofumi could be a real threat to Shiryu and it would be a fair matchup to think about vs wise where a lot of factors from both like Shiryu's resistance to Naofumi's causality manipulation, seemingly his biggest weapons, though Naofumi's poisons and curses, more modest would also plausibly work...though Shiryu's would be defenseless against their with the Eigth Sense, Bodily Control, and the ability to attack curses. The biggest interest is the thematic side. Naofumi is a hero driven by his hatred and want for vengeance after his false accusation and exile from civilized society and I think there could be a really cool theme about the difference between justice and vengeance. The two would be such opposing personalities, and were both popular for being different kinds of heroes for their time; Shiryu for being a morally noble, wise, and mature hero in a hot-blooded series and Naofumi for being a pragmatic, realistic, and cynical hero in a time of generic Isekai protagonists. An exchange of words between them would be as interesting as an exchange of fists, or shields as it were.
God Dang Saint Seyia is so cool. and Shiryu is Absolutely one of if not the coolest characters in the series, I know I like him most, and so does everyone I know who has seen it, and apparently the majority of fans as well. The Fact that he is like the Badass Immovable Wall of Unyielding Moral Nobility and Justice truly makes him someone anyone can root for and I and i would hope a lot of others can relate to!
ReplyDeleteShiryu's power and abilities are absolutely Insane, more so than even I thought, and I had already known he was QUITE strong from watching the original Anime series. It seemed actually hilarious to me how many times I thought there were things they weren't capable of or things I thought had some limits to them and then they went on to literally shatter my expectations by doing that very thing. I used to have an old saying about Saint Seyia characters that you should always expect them to go well beyond what you think they are at, as they cannot be Overestimated. This blog is a shining example of this virtue.
Saint Seyia is the definition of a verse that is prepared for any contingency. I think one of the strongest aspects of it is how it has a Whole bunch of broken abilities that all stem from different levels of precise manipulation of the same thing, Cosmos. It makes it really easy to just scale a whole bunch of broken things into all the characters. Saint Seyia characters aren't just broken because they are insanely strong, they are broken because between their Insane Scale immunity to all the classic big hax like Soul, Mind, Time, Space, Matter/Energy, Fate, Death, Reality and even Causality Hax, ability to hit and completely destroy things up to the flipping conceptual level, and functionally make themselves immortal, they literally FORCE you to have to fight them in a fair physical brawl most of the time.
Shiryu has a lot of extremely awesome signature moves as well, from his cool water powers, to his numerous badass dragon punches that Street Fighter loved so much. Although Definitely my favorite of his unique powers is his use of Excalibur, for several reasons. One, its Absurdly powerful, like legit a Hax in its own right that I'm pretty certain a recent Fairy Tail character is a reference too. Two, its something that Shiryu earned from another character, through almost sacrificing himself so it really shows growth. and Three and most importantly, It took Shiryu, the Saint who is suppose to be Maximum possible defense....and gave him something that instantly made him Max Offense too. the perfect balance of Shield and Sword, only makes his Libran Symbolism that much more complete
But i think what makes Shiryu especially cool beyond that is in spite of all those insane advantages he seems to have, he is constantly fighting people that can seemingly kill him with their eyes closed, constantly going through Hell and back, sometimes quite literally, but always purservearing through and doing whatever he can to win while somehow still never compromising his Integrity. Shunrei is definitely Best girl and Shiryu certainly deserves someone like her with how much of a complete hero he is. But he is the kinda man who would never allow himself to reach a happily ever after, without nobley holding the door opened for all other innocent souls to reach their own first.
I am BEYOND Excited for your next blog, It is a matchup I have been waiting for a long time And can't believe its finally gonna happen!
Eccentric? What do you mean by... oh. For some reason, I am hyped for this, probably because it features two of my favorite verses ever, and maybe by some miracle the fight will go from cartoonishy ridiculous to surprisingly epic.
ReplyDeleteVery well made blog Imp. Saint Seiya is one of those series that I was first really exposed to through your blogs, and the more I learn about it, the more I think it’s a shame that it wasn’t as big in the United States. I love how it implements mythology into its narrative, and as your blog demonstrates, everything feels mythological in scope with crazy feats such as Taurus being able to shatter a dimension of human souls. I do like your statement regarding how humans will infinitely improve while gods will remain static concepts in that context.
ReplyDeleteShiryu is a really cool character. I remember when I watched the series, moments like Shiryu fixing the bronze clothes with his blood and gouging his eyes out in order to fight Perseus Algol were particularly memorable moments for me. And reading this blog made me appreciate the character even more with how much justice plays a role in his motivation, and I really appreciate how you pointed out how much Shiryu differed from many other Shonen protagonists at the time with how mature and level-headed he is. I really need to go back and finish the series.
As usual, you did a great job of compiling the feats. You gave a lot of evidence justifying Shiryu’s universal AP through direct feats and scaling and it made it pretty clear in showing what he is capable of. Dang are all these characters overpowered though, starting out with universal ap and quintillions of times the speed of light…and just infinitely rises with miracles. I mentioned before that I think the idea of “Resistances” is something I appreciate more and more the longer I am in the VS community, and I think Saint Seiya is the perfect example of how great they can be. The fact that Shiryu and the other saints can resist all of these OP abilities including everything to reality warping to fate manipulation really contributes to the mythological tone of the series and it just makes them seem plain cool.
The personality section is as usual is probably my favorite part of the blog. It takes everything said about the character in the blog and wraps it up in a nice little bow. I like how you go into the character’s popularity polls, and how Shiryu representing willpower in the pursuit of justice represents the series well as a whole.
I never heard of “Rising of the Shield Hero”, but from the way you describe the matchup with Naofumi sounds pretty cool to me. Hope to see you attempt it someday! Also, oh man, I’m super excited for the next one! I grew up on both of those shows. It is not a battle I expected but it is super cool to see your first Nickelodeon vs Cartoon Network match, and one that sounds hilarious at that! The trailer was pretty well made as well!
One of my favorite characters from one of my favorite franchises! This is amazing, one of my favorite blogs ever! I'm so excited, it's hard to pick which thing I wanna talk about first! I guess I'll start by saying, thank you so much for writing this Imp! Anyone who knows me knows I love Shiryu and SS, so to have a full analysis like this including everything relevant up to and including the ongoing manga is a treasure beyond value! I really appreciated the music link you included at the beginning, too.
ReplyDeleteA lot of this was a wonderful walk down memory lane. It was great getting to hear Shiryu's story again, this time in your words. The sections outlining Shiryu's stats and abilities were so wonderfully full of cited sources; you really went all out in finding every last thing you could! Even his basic stealth abilities made the cut. I can't tell you how nice it is to have an analysis for Shiryu like this so I can easily show others his capabilities backed up with all the proof you've gathered and explained in your usual helpful way. Once again, thank you! Jeez, Episode G sure has a lot of crazy feats! I'm only familiar with the various Saint Seiya anime series, so the manga feats you included meant I got to learn of numerous new things that relate to a character that I thought I already knew very well. I've known for years how crazy Saint Seiya is, but it still shocks me reading about things like how countless universes were made and destroyed during one fight, or how Shiryu can go around punching hearts even though he's paralyzed. Ya know, the condition that expressly means one cannot move! Makes me think finding opponents for Saints must be tricky, as they can ignore/resist/punch away so much and have incredible stats meaning the few that can challenge them might be so busted in their own way that they might even end up too strong to be a fair fight! But more on opponents later.
I really, really enjoyed the section you did on Shiryu's techniques. My username is in fact partially inspired by Shiryu's most famous move, the Rozan Sho Ryu Ha. Very good of you to note that while Shiryu inherited the Excalibur technique, he's not as proficient in it as its previous user (yet). And the section on the various super senses of Saint Seiya will be very useful to have on hand in the future. Particularly, it was nice to read the bit on the Sixth Sense, as it often gets overlooked because the Seventh and Eighth Senses are more relevant to the plot. Utterly fantastic section on miracles too, hands down the most powerful tool in Shiryu's kit.
I appreciated the artwork and images you included to spice up this blog, and most of all I loved the pictures of both the Dragon Cloth and Shiryu's God Cloth, which appear to be official artwork. Consider them saved, thank you! You know I love sections on characters' equipment and while Shiryu doesn't have many pieces of gear, his cloth is one of the coolest things I've ever seen in fiction! You even included details such as how hard it would be to freeze both his cloths. Imp, you've truly outdone yourself on the details!
Continued from above
DeleteNice job highlighting Shiryu's martial arts skills and tactical cleverness. I find things like this often get passed over with all the flashy universe-busting craziness going on in his series, but secondary stats are important even at high levels when combatants end up being able to bust equally giant rocks. And as for Shiryu's weaknesses, I think you did a great job tying them into his personality which followed in a section that was my favorite part of this whole blog. What a guy, his weakness is being too much of a good person. And that takes me to the beautifully-written personality section. You know, I often compliment you on how well you capture what a character is “all about” in these sections and I always look forward to them very much. Well, this one is a truly stand out example of both your beautiful prose and your deep understanding of the character. The fact about him winning the popularity contest blew my mind, as I'm sure it would Shiryu's given how humble the dude is. And that great scene with Dohko that you brought up was brilliantly demonstrative of Shiryu's wisdom in spite of his youth and in contrast to the old, wise master of his. The final paragraph here was my favorite though. This paragraph is one of the greatest explanations of what it is to be a hero that I've ever read or heard and given my love of shonen and other stories about heroes, I've seen people discuss this a lot. It was touching, and made me think somebody's gotta call you up and have you work as a writer on one of these series some day! So well done Imp, for blowing me away when my expectations were already high to begin with!
Shiryu's recommended opponent floored me. Truly a clash of shields! Man, I'm caught up on the Shield Hero anime, but the end of the novel must get truly insane for Naofumi to be able to step in the ring with Shiryu, let alone give him a proper challenge. I do really like the idea of their ideals clashing; justice vs vengeance always makes for good back and forth. And Thor's latest trailer really surprised me! I don't know either of these characters, though I watched Danny Phantom a long time ago. It seems like it'll be a refreshing and fun change of pace. I've laughed many times at the humor you include in your blogs, so I'm looking forward to seeing how funny this clash of joke characters will be!
Thanks again for making this blog, Imp. Even if it wasn't written for me specifically, it still means a lot and I'm happier for it.
