Top 10 Smartest Sailor Moon Characters

The other day I was writing about how Galaxia's intelligence is underestimated and her arrogance is overestimated and it got me thinking about the smartest characters in Sailor Moon.

SM intelligence scaling is a bit weird for a few reasons:

1: A lot of characters are treated as highly wise ancient entities, like Queen Serenity, who are very wise from their sheer age but they don't really have feats per say outside of speaking in a wise manner.

2: Intelligence and wisdom are heavily divided. EOS Usagi despite being near the least sheer intelligent of the Sol Senshi is the wisest character able to understand the desires and wills of even her enemies and the conceptual entity Chaos.

3: Characters will often have "feats" of contending with characters you'd assume they'd have no chance against. For instance Sailor Mercury quoted Shakespeare to make a point and Rei immediatly countered by quoting Bacon despite Ami being the smartest of the Guardian Senshi. As such you really need to focus more on the consistency of the intelligence feats as opposed to a high showing of intellectually besting a character once.

4: A lot of characters have an enhanced awareness that isn't the same as intelligence, it's more of a supernatural sense, but makes it hard to distinguish between the two, such as Wiseman seeing the whole of the spacetime continuum.

This will be a ranking of if the two characters got into a contest of intellects, who do I think would win the majority of times.

Dishonorable Mention: Berthier

So a lot of people think Berthier is really smart but manga-wise at least she....really isn't.

Yes she is the Ayakashi counterpart of Ami, but this seems to be based on their shared affinity for water magic, not intelligences. While it's true Berthier is considered the third best Chess Player in the world and challenged Ami to Chess this is not superhumanly intelligent, but is by her own admission because she uses her dowsing ability to find the correct next play to make. Sure she's not unintelligent, but I would personally put some of the other Guardian Senshi above her intellect-wise.

Honorable Mention: Sailor Galaxia

The character who made me think of doing this list, Galaxia would have been the 11th spot on this list if it had 11 spots, I went back and forth between her and the 10th place shot, and to be honest she COULD be near the top of the list. This is because Galaxia has some of the highest end intelligence scaling feats in the verse, intuitively understanding something that Sailor Cosmos did not, and almost tricking the ancient primordial conceptual evil Chaos. She could honestly be really high on the list and so didn't feel right not mentioning her intellect, however while those feats are impressive and speak to her intelligence, it's more like the high ends I mentioned above where it's moreso singular fields where Galaxia is really smart in and not her consistent intelligence.

That's not to say Galaxia's consistent intelligence is unimpressive. As I said I went back and forth between her and the 10th place. Galaxia has impressive tactical feats, to the point that all her plans succeeded except for the ones Sailor Cosmos interferred with. She was planning on manipulating the Galaxy Cauldron to control the evolution of the galaxy which sounds very high end but it's hard to quantify and tell how high it is.

10: Sailor Pluto

Sailor Pluto could be higher if you take Ami's statement to mean that Setsuna is smarter then her. Given the context I think Ami was being humble as it was a plot point of the Early Dream Arc is that the Guardian Senshi were viewing the Outer Senshi their mentors as larger then life figures and inspirations.

Regardless Sailor Pluto is praised in intelligence and wisdom by both King Endymion and Sailor Mercury with Mercury specifically stating it seems like she knew everything. King Endymion stated that she had an immense wisdom and the best judgement abilities of any of them via her many eras of experience.  She scales to Haruka and Michiru who decieved the Perfect Daimon who have an intellect hundreds of times that of a normal human. She also built Luna-P, a toy for Chibiusa that can supposedly turn into anything that she wants, including an umbrella that twirling it hypnotizes anyone who sees it into accepting anything she says.

9: Sailor Mercury

I was also surprised that Ami was only this high, given she's the Senshi of Intelligence. Her position is moreso due to the fact that she doesn't really have the feats comparable to a lot of the supergenius villains who actually created a lot of powerful weapons to use agains the Sailor Senshi, and that she was used for an intellect form of scaling to hype a character.

As the hpye character, she actually has some of the best intelligence feats regardless of her nature as a heroine. She is confirmed to have an IQ of over 300, was implied to be relative to Viluy, the perfect daimon with the best intelligence feats, a perfect daimon having an intellect hundreds of times that of humans, used a 90s computer to track an object through dimensions, and more. She's so intelligent that in her first appearence the villains wanted to brainwash her specifically to use her intellect to take over Japan. Ami could very well be higher, or indeed much higher, but she doesn't have a huge amount of feats to compare to the big name supergenius villains.

8: Sailor Star Maker

I really don't want to put Taiki this high, but I am sort of forced too. Taiki has only one intelligence showing which is that Ami got 499 on a test and she got 500. Now in real life that is easily within the margin of error and Ami has far more intelligence feats over a much larger area.

That said if I'm being honest with myself, that's an attempted justification motivated by a want narratively for Ami to be smarter. A lot of SM fans, myself included, don't want Taiki to be smarter since being smart is Ami's "thing" and she has far more showings across the series. That said Taiki has one intelligence showing and that one intelligence showing's pretty much sole purpose is to hype Taiki>Ami. So yeah I'm sort of forced to put Taiki here.

7: Viluy

Viluy is a perfect daimon who have an intellect a hundred times that of a human. She has the best feats of them, since she's implied to be similar to Sailor Mercury in intellect and has better feats then either Ami or Taiki.

She created a holographic miniture replica of a galaxy and created a nanobot swarm that could tear apart a Sailor Senshi (Mercury) and extract the soul.

6: King Endymion

Mamoru has alright intelligence feats before his King Endymion State. For instance his school has a 90 point differential. That said as King Endymion he has the same powers as Neo-Queen Serenity who has the lambda power which contains the Mercury Crystal's abilities. On top of that he has 900 years of experience so he should be smarter.

5: Professor Tomoe/Germatoid

Tomoe created all the daimons including the perfect daimons via technology, chemical and biological means. However he also has some mad science feats that are above anything in the previous "tier" of intelligence. He created a robot body for Hotaru and most notably somehow with technology created a dimension to trap Usagi and the Outer Senshi in within an elevator.

This would be technology equivalent to likely a type 2 or 3 civilization, which is a definite supergenius level of intellect.

4: Saphir

Saphir is the supergenius inventor of the Black Moon Clan and the inventor of their technology. This includes their droids, who are implied to be alive and some of which are ghostly, time travel, energy reactors that can mess up an entire black hole planet, ufos that move faster then the senshi, advanced sensors, etc.

Saphir has more consistent intelligence feats on a supergenius scale then Tomoe. Also while it's not really intelligence in an actual test of smarts between the two, Saphir is far more level headed then Tomoe.

3: Death Phantom

So it was a bit weird scaling Saphir and Death Phantom because Saphir and Rubeus were both skeptical of Wiseman despite him manipulating the entire Black Moon Clan. That said even ignoring the fact that Wiseman is aware of the entire spacetime continuum, Saphir claimed that the whole time Death Phantom was manipulating the Black Moon Clan, himself included like pawns.

Thus suggests that he's signifigantly more intelligent and while Saphir and Rubeus were skeptical it doesn't mean Death Phantom doesn't scale above Saphir.

2: Chaos

So this is a fairly simple point. Death Phantom is a mere aspect of Chaos. Beyond that Chaos is a cosmic conceptual entity that is aware of things on a cosmic level. It's a bit hard to seperate his intelligence from his cosmic awareness but Chaos is definitely at the very least signifigantly above Death Phantom, since Death Phantom is just a single aspect of his.

1: Sailor Cosmos

So in my original list Sailor Cosmos was not at the top of this list. I originally had her as being just above King Endymion because she has the same scaling and even more experience on top of that. And while that is true for her intelligence in a sense, she would also absolutely outwit Chaos in an intellectual battle just because of her wisdom.

Usagi's wisdom is far and away the highest in the series by a wide margin to the point that she understood the desires of even her enemies like Galaxia and Chaos and unlocked the Lambda Power with it. In a fight she could intuit all his desires and intents. Not to mention a part of her is Guardian Cosmos who has a general sense of cosmic awareness.

If you wanna just strictly by raw brainpower, she'd be right above King Endymion but if you take a more general approach of who would outwit who, it would probably actually be Sailor Cosmos just due to Usagi's wisdom EOS.
