When I talk about Sailor Moon, I'm usually referring to the manga and I only rarely refer to the anime, usually to contrast it with the manga. As such to complete this trio of top 5 SM blogs, I was going to make a top 5 list for SM Filler.
I would have just made one for top 5 episodes but that wouldn't be really interesting, it would just be the last two eps of season 1, last two episodes of season 5, and the last ep of the Nehelenia arc at the start of season 5. Given my general dislike for filler, I thought this would be a more interesting idea. Sailor Moon has a lot of filler. I don't mean filler in the way that some anime use it, where it's an episode that's different to the manga. The amount of Sailor Moon where the episode is like the manga is basically just the first episode corresponding to the first chapter. The other 199 episodes of the anime are mostly original with maybe an occasional reference to the manga.
For this I'm assuming an episode that doesn't contribute to the main plot of the season it's in is filler, which is about half the episodes in the series. Minor things can be introduced like a Senshi getting a new attack but no episodes where any plot developments show up. With that said here's my top 5.
5: Episode 156: "Don't Lose Sight of Your Dreams: The Mirror of Truth"
Admittingly I kinda fudged this one. This is an episode that would be in my top 10 filler episodes, and the other 4 happened to correspond to the other 4 seasons so I wanted to get one to represent SuperS, the most filler-filled season by far, so I figured putting this one at five was alright. To say that SuperS's themes was "dreams" would be stating the obvious. I'm pretty sure every third word in SuperS is "dreams." The villains extract the dreams of people to try and search for Pegasus hiding in one of them. In this episode the Senshi meet a completely poor desperate literally starving painter and ask him to paint them for pay, but he paints them as they are. All the characters agree that everyone else's paintings are totally accurate but insist that theirs should be cuter, more beautiful or otherwise better. The metaphor is pretty clear I think, everyone sees everyone else's faults but not their own. Nobody would hire Kamoi because he would only paint them as they are.
Before taking his dream mirror, the Amazoness Quartet member CereCere hires the artist vainly to make a painting of her and Kamoi relents and exaggerates her beauty as she wants, depressing him. As a result when the villains take his dream mirror out, it's grey and dull reflecting the painful grey reality of compromised principles and artistic ideals and the Lemure refused to eat it. This is the episode that I think better than any filler reflects the theme of dreams the season's trying to go for. It's not a particularly new idea (selling out your dreams will leave you empty inside) but I thought it was a rather good and clever visual representation of the idea.
4: Episode 12: "I Want a Boyfriend: The Luxury Cruise Ship is a Trap"
So a lot of the episodes in Season 1 Sailor Moon get a boost to me for being sorta "classic" Sailor Moon and having this sense of iconicness. Despite the more anime-characterization of the Senshi this episode feels very classically Sailor Moon to me. But the biggest reason I like it is Thetis. Thetis is probably my favorite monster of the week from any series I've seen. This is the penultimate episode of the Jadeite arc in the anime where Beryl is all but decided to end Jadeite for his failures. A youma pining for Jadeite, the water being Thetis sees this as her chance to get in with him. So many of the monsters of the week are just evil destroying thing with some weekly theme like the razor one, the time one, the good one, the butterfly one etc. Thetis has her own theme of water, but she has so much more. She's got a clear personality and goal. She's got way more agency then most of the MotW physically attacking Sailor Moon knocking her through a window right after her pre-battle speech, making a cruise ship appear with her powers, making these giant water torrents, transforming into a battle form. She's got way more threat then most youma, something I noticed even as a child. I remember watching Sailor Moon wondering when Thetis would come back because she was clearly more then the random episodic monsters. I just really like Thetis, she's a really good villain.
3: Episode 184: "A Night Alone Together: Usagi in Danger"
Whenever a series goes on long enough, they get a meta-episode playing with its own tropes. This is that episode for Sailor Moon. If you want to just watch an episode of SM without having seen, I'd suggest any episode on this list other then this because this is a reward for long-time fans joking about its own tropes. So the plot is that there's a burglary crime spree in the area of Usagi's house and Usagi...being Usagi gets scared and wants the other Senshi to stay with her leading to every character of the arc and a monster of the week being in one room, to the point that they can't even all fit. This episode is full of really hilarious gags specifically about Sailor Moon my favorite being the one with Aluminem Seiren being upset about Uranus and Neptune showing up...if you've seen the ep you know the joke I mean. That's probably my favorite joke in the series. But yeah for a long-time Sailor Moon fan this episode is just a fun candy.
2: Episode 75: "The Mysterious New Guardian: Sailor Pluto Appears"
I'm not really sure if this is filler because as the name suggests Sailor Pluto first appears but the episode has little to do with her and doesn't really advance the main plot. Chibiusa comes from the future where Crystal Tokyo was destroyed by the bombs of the Black Moon Clan and shows occasional signs of trauma from her memories. In this episode Chibiusa is is lulled into a sleep that will not break, and non-stops dreams of being in the ruins of Crystal Tokyo with a droid resembling the Grim Reaper, Jakoku chasing her. It's pretty clear to see Jakoku represents the feeling of dread and the inevitability of death that haunts Chibiusa. The Sailor Senshi go inside Chibiusa's dreams but their attacks do nothing to Jakoku, inevitable and invincible it seems. The climax of the episode is possibly the best moment in R, where Sailor Moon pleads with Chibiusa to believe in them and Chibiusa gives Sailor Moon the power to overcome even the grim reaper. It's such a heartfelt emotional moment and captures the mythic archetypal power of Sailor Moon as a concept. This is an episode that captures the beauty of pure archetype seeing Sailor Moon the heroine overcome death and inevitability nigh-literally via peoples belief in her.
1: Episode 106: "The Bonds of Destiny: Uranus' Distant Past"
I kinda feel bad calling this episode "filler", this episode is so good and given that Uranus and Neptune's awakening is unknown canonically, I sorta headcanon this as being Uranus and Neptune's actual awakening story. That said it technically doesn't affect the main plot of S so it is filler. Much of this episode's plot is Haruka flashing back to when Michiru recruited her into being a Sailor Senshi. The episode shows the complexities of Haruka and Michiru's characters and the beauty of their love. Even compared to the legendary episode 110, I feel no episode gives a better sense of Haruka and Michiru as characters. Haruka is the legendary soldier of the wind faster than anyone, that nothing could ever trap; not the enemy, not responsibility, not destiny. Michiru is the mysterious Senshi of the seas, a woman of depth and compassion who shows a perfect visage and no weakness. Michiru tries to convince Haruka to join the fight against the enemy but Haruka wouldn't be chained down. The climax of the episode where a Daimon is threatening Neptune's life but Michiru cries and pleads not to accept this hard life of pain making Haruka refuse to run away anymore and transform to save Michiru is such a perfect coallesing of their two characters. Their love is the life of the skies and the seas, the winds whipping out the foams of the seas, emotions bubbling to the surface of Michiru's normally inscrutable heart. The seas catch the winds within, just as Michiru holds Haruka to her side not by catching her, no one could, but by her depths that call Haruka to come to her.
I could wax poetic about this episode on and on but I hope the point's made, this episode is just fantastic and few things could better represent Haruka and Michiru's characters and it is without a doubt in my mind the best Sailor Moon filler episode.
So this is really meant as a companion piece to my last blog about my least liked Sailor Moon characters, these are some characters from Sailor Moon that I really like but I don't think get all the love they deserve.
Now this blog is about the gap in appreciation, and as such the first two of these five entries are characters that do get a bunch of love already I just wish they got even more. A character being higher on this list doesn't mean I like them more, it's that they get less appreciation than I think they really deserve.
This is a list that could be a lot longer and was a lot easier to make than the list because I really like a lot of the SM cast, and this shouldn't be taken as a definitive list, it's just some of the characters I think are really cool and should get more love.
5: Sailor Jupiter
So this is a weird one because I'm pretty sure Jupiter was one of the most popular senshi in the west, and even in Japan she has a fairly wide fanbase, but I feel like she doesn't get as much credit as she deserves, despite her being my favorite of the Guardian Senshi. Jupiter in like every version of Sailor Moon is just pure awesome. She's infected by a sickness that makes her almost collapse and a futuristic robot is sent to assassinate her, and she just throws it away with a punch. Nehelenia, the big bad of the fourth arc has Sailor Moon at her grip and so Jupiter just punches her from another dimension shattering her face and making her run away. In the anime in her initial debut before even transforming for the first time she beats up Zoisite one of the commanders of the Dark Kingdom then just picks up one of the seven great youma and just throws him away. All the other senshi have this really complex relationship with Usagi but Makoto's is as simple and heartwarming as the two sentences "She accepted me when no on else did. If you hurt her, I'll punch you." and it's just really sweet seeing the two together, with Usagi describing her as being like an older sister.
I get that she doesn't have really any "twist" to her like the other Senshi do. It's like the other Guardians are all foods that have spice or salt to them and Makoto's just pure sweet but I do love my pure sweet tastes. Speaking of Makoto's personality is just so wholesome; she's just this cute girly girl that happens to have super strength and can't stand to see innocents threatened. Whenever she's around she's both eminantly a wholesome romantic while also being fairly pragmatic about it and I just really like the dynamic she and Usagi have. Of the four guardian senshi, I think Jupiter's fanbase at least in Japan was the smallest and that's a shame to me because she's my favorite of them. Like I said I think she's already really popular in the west so I don't think many people would disagree with me here, but I just felt like I wanted to argue for her.
4: Tuxedo Kamen
So like the Senshi, Mamoru has a lot of fans however Mamoru also has a signifigant amount of the fandom who dislike him, more than any of the Senshi outside maybe Chibi-Usa (and with both of them it seems to be from the non-canon anime adaptation.) So let me talk about Mamoru and why's so cool to the point that he's one of my top 10 favorite characters in fiction. Mamoru from the start of the manga has this sense of elegance and dignity to him. He's this phantom thief, you're not supposed to be really sure of at first who lurks around for the Silver Crystal. Despite initially not even having powers he's actually able to compete in the race for the Silver Crystal with the Senshi and the Dark Kingdom as a viable third party just off of clever thinking. Then you learn about his sad backstory and him and Usagi's ship starts, my favorite ship in fiction. Mamoru in the manga is like the absolutely perfect male love interest to me. He's constantly supportive of Usagi, believing in her but encouraging her to be better. He's protective of her but not arrogant and understands his own limitations compared to her. At most he's maybe a little perfect but he even shows some insecurities at time. He's an excellent father to Chibiusa and he's a fellow guardian of the Earth whose Golden Crystal equals Usagi's own. Whenever they're together, not only do they get stronger together from their love, not only is there an irresistable chemistry between them, but those two facts are connected. They draw out the best from each other as Usagi wants to be strong for Mamoru and Mamoru wants to be protective for Usagi.
I hear complaints about Mamoru and all of them are either from the anime or simply don't make sense. I want people to understand this; Mamoru is not useless, if anything Mamoru is given way more to do in the manga than the Guardian Senshi. He does not throw roses in the canon manga, he uses a cane or sword as a melee weapon and then develops from the Golden Crystal energy manipulation. I know it's a controversial point but I really love Mamoru, he truly is Usagi's other half, the two completing each other. From here the character won't be quite as big name but they're still characters I wish got more love.
3: Kaorinite
Everyone loves the mad Professor Tomoe and Mistress 9 and while I do too, I also wish people loved Kaorinite of the Mugen arc enemies as well, probably the most attractive adaptation of Igor ever made. Hotaru's mother died and her father is a mad scientist trying to keep his daughter alive and make both of them immortal. Kaorinite is first introduced as this assistant of his who is attracted to the mad doctor. You'd think she'd be all mean to Hotaru, the classic evil stepmother trope, but no she's actually pretty nice and forgiving to Hotaru, to the point that Tomoe has to chastise Hotaru for being mean to Kaorinite. And she's got this sad backstory how Pharoah 90 infected her with her Daimon as a demonstration for Germatoid, and despite being turned into a monster for him, Kaorinite still loves him and is trying to achieve Tomoe's dream of becoming immortal. Despite being this really more sexual character that you'd think would just be this stereotype of the evil stepmother to be seducing Hotaru's papa, she just seems to be this fairly honest woman doing bad things for her love. Her daimon also seems to be attracted to Pharoah 90, the same way as Mistress 9 is, which creates not just a parallel between the human and the daimon but makes you wonder if the Daimon truly are that evil just trying to get love and union with their master. It feels really compelling compared to the usual of this trope.
I don't know if people agree, but I think her powers are also really cool. Most of the Sailor Moon characters use magic but usually it's sentai style energy/elemental blasts. Kaorinite is the Grand Magus witch and has powers that actually feel like magic with these rituals and melting wax candle figurines of the Senshi leading them to their doom or using a pentragram and necromancy to bring back the Witches V from the dead. Her powers actually feel like a witch's and all occult.
2: Kunzite
So when people talk about their favorite of the Heavenly Kings, the common answers are either Nephrite for his personality and his arc in the anime or Zoisite for his cunning and tricksyness. However my favorite in both the manga and the anime was Kunzite. Talking strictly about the manga, Kunzite I think really distinguishes himself most from the other Heavenly Kings. All the other Heavenly Kings are enacting these sneaky schemes and talk to each other like "I'll lure the Sailor Senshi into this dimension where I'll ambush them and drain their energy for our leader Metaria." Meanwhile Kunzite just shows up hovering over the city, drains the entire city and is like "Sailor Senshi, get the hell out here or I blow up your city!" The prior Heavenly Kings feel like something out of an Urban Fantasy series like Harry Potter with dark magical schemes in the background and meanwhile Kunzite is just like this Dragon Ball villain just placed in the series out of nowhere which these sudden large scale feats and the way he fights just being this arrogant brawly style. "Ah yeah Sailor Senshi throw your strongest attacks at me, they'll do NOTHING I'm too strong!" His plans are a lot less clever than the other Heavenly Kings but just has this immense presence manga-wise (in the anime his schemes are so dumb they're hilarious because it just seems like he somehow knows he's a fictional villain and somehow the Senshi will end up there anyway. He's also got a pretty respectable presence in the anime.)
He's also protective of Zoisite which is pretty sweet to see and when he starts getting his memories back, his defiance of Beryl, brief as it is, in a bid to protect his prince is honestly really cool to see. Kunzite is just this really theatrical character that despite being essentially a monster of the week in the manga, had a lot of presence despite it.
1: Saphir
I know Saphir does get appreciation but whenever I read Saphir appreciation it's about specifically his anime counterpart so this is going to be appreciation for his manga counterpart, who I like even more than his anime counterpart. So Demande we see as this tyrant prince of the terrorist organization the Black Moon Clan. We learn that all their science comes from his abused little brother Saphir who Demande shows praise one moment then threatens the moment after. Saphir has a confusing amount of spite and love for his brother that just feels really genuine for someone of his position. Saphir blaming Usagi for Demande's fall to insanity is a moment that is so complex in emotions because you know Saphir is projecting and you want to spite him for blaming this innocent girl Demande has sexually harrassed for his brother's genocidal actions but you also feel sorry for his broken heart. I think of all the Sailor Moon villains Saphir has some of the most complex writing and I don't see it acknowledged.
Saphir is also just this really smart person who always suspected Wiseman and his plans and usually has this really calm tactical air around him. Despite his lack of raw power, he comes off to me as more of a threat than even most of the Black Moon Clan due to his purposeful all his actions are, and how clearly focused and rationally he pursues his goals. Saphir just seems like a really cool character to me.
I'm considering doing one more of these SM Top 5s, about a topic I've never actually talked about on this blog so feel free to tell me eitherway.
Sailor Moon has a fantastic cast of characters. You might disagree with me on that, but I think that's a pretty well agreed on point. Almost every single character I either really enjoy or feel basically neutral on. That said there are a few characters I don't like, usually ones with VERY small roles in side-stories, and wanted to make a blog on them. I should note that this is not how much I dislike them as a person. The character I like least as a person would probably be Demande for attempting sexual assault and acts of terrorism but he's a villain and I like him as a villain.
I think the best characters in general are is the heroes of the series who are each majorly influential on the genre, and many of the magical girl archetypes directly trace back to Sailor Moon. The villains are pretty 90s style, that is to say most of the time they focus more on being intimidating and sinister rather then particularly fleshed out human characters. I personally don't mind this, as they're usually threatening and entertaining enough to make up for their lack of particularly deep personalities. The civilian characters are probably the least interesting. For all Naoko's strengths as a writer; creating fantastical lore and ideas, evoking emotion, connecting explicit events with emotional and narrative meaning, writing mundane situations and characters are not her forte so she generally limits it where possible. Her civilian characters tend to come out as flat stereotypes, as lacking in depth as her monsters of the week but without the entertaining factor of their threat: for instance Umino is the "obnoxious nerd" trope, Ikuko is the "overbearing mom" trope, Shingo is the "annoying little brother" trope.
So these are my top 5 most disliked characters in Sailor Moon, most of them being these characters with very small roles in the story.
5: Kaidou
While Rei's father is never seen in the manga, Kaidou is his secretary who comes up in Casablanca Memories. Kaidou is just a depressing character to think about both in terms of how he affected Rei early in the series and in what he represents. Kaidou started out as someone who Rei actually trusted, the two of them both having no desire to lose their independence for a relationship or sacrificing their morals for politics. That would be a pretty cool dynamic to explore, given he literally worked for Rei's father someone who in Rei's eyes at least embodied both those things. But then he changes and gives up on that dream, and it really breaks Rei's trust and it's just really sad. Like I get the symbolism behind it, but I still don't really like the character. He seems only there to twist the knife in Rei's side at her father's actions towards her and her mother.
4: Taiki Kou
If you asked me who my least favorite character in Sailor Moon is, my short answer would be Taiki because Taiki is my most disliked character in the main 60-chapter manga, the rest of these options are from side stories or things like that. Despite the fact that Stars is my favorite arc, I've never been that into the Sailor Starlights though they are much better in the manga than they are in the anime. That said Seiya and Yaten are both fine, Seiya I mostly recall for having a cute little unrequited crush on Usagi (and doesn't try to force Usagi to love her back like in the anime), and Yaten is prickly and sarcastic that leads to a funny gag with Michiru. Taiki however is... According to Naoko she was aiming for a Setsuna-like character with Taiki but while Setsuna has lots of introspection, Taiki is just made weirdly improbably good at everything. "Not only am I a big league idol singer, but I'm also part of the schools computer club who can make music on my computer that makes the girls swoon, and I read poetry, and I am in the gardening club where I impressed Makoto and I got a better score on my exams than Ami." That one really rubs me the wrong way because Ami's civilian power is supergenius intellect, and has been the intelligent girl for the last 4 arcs, and to build up a character like that only to undermine it feels wrong and kinda unfair. Taiki also just seems to have this weird pretentious attiude towards everyone but like the other Starlights and the royalty. Like she introduces herself as having for hobbies "reciting poetry and computers." Yaten gets prissy at times, but she feels a lot more human and funny then Taiki. I don't know, Taiki just rubs me the wrong way.
All these things are way worse in the anime though, where Taiki had to be coerced into showing any compassion towards a seemingly terminal ill child fan of the Starlights in the Hospital.
3: Mrs. Aino
There's a big gap between the fourth spot on this list and the third spot. The Sailor Senshi have a bad tendency to have parental problems but while Hotaru's dad is an outright villain, and Ami and Reis' dads for their faults are never actually seen in series. Minako's mom on the other hand is seen numerous times in Codename: Sailor V and she's always complaining to Minako. She constantly complains Minako isn't acting ladylike enough or isn't doing well enough in school. On some level that's relatable enough because Minako, certainly not the easily child to raise, but she does weird cruel things like tell Minako that if she didn't apply herself in school she'd end up like her father in earshot of their father. Given Minako's father seems to be a pretty ordinary saleryman this is a bizarrely humiliating and hurtful thing to say to both of them for no apparent reason. Ikuko could also be overbearing and strict with Usagi but she shows moments of compassion towards her, even in the first arc when Kenji and Ikuko are talking about how no matter how old she gets Usagi will always be their little girl. I can't remember a single time Mrs. Aino said anything nice about Minako. Given that both Mrs. Aino and Ikuko are based of Naoko Takeuchi's actual mom, I think Ikuko can be seen as improved version that's more realistic and balanced in portrayal.
2: The Parallel Senshi
There is another big gap between the third spot and the second spot. The 5-2 spots could be filled with these 4. These 4 comes from the parallel timeline. In it, all 4 Guardian Senshi have one daughter, all the same age, all with the same names as the mothers, all with basically the personalities of their mothers. Why? It's so uncreative. I get that Naoko likes things being nice and neat, I have that tendency too, but this is just ridiculous. And beyond having NOTHING to call their own, the 4 of them are all really mean to Kousagi, Usagi's second daughter in the alternate timeline, for no reason other than she eats a lot. They're not fun at all to read, they're not interesting. But there is someone even worse.
1: Taku
Taku is meant to be an antagonist, so maybe I shouldn't consider him worse than the Parallel Senshi but I just really hate this character. The Senshi battle all kinds of villains in the series; from other times, dimensions, magical, alien, robotic etc. Taku is the only antagonist without any powers and he lacks any menance. I'm 99% sure Minako could beat him up even in her civilian state. He's made out to be this pathetic loser, this misogynist nerd who only cares about preserving his video game arcade space from girls. There's no threat coming from this guy to the point that I could probably beat him. He's not entertaining to watch, he's gross and annoying being a misogynist and arguably a pervert who attempts to sexually harass Minako. He's obviously not compelling at all. With every other character on this list I can at least tell what Naoko was thinking but I don't get the thought process behind a character like this. Yeah I understand he's supposed to be a strawman so you can feel good when he's beaten but I've never liked that kind of character and I don't get the appeal. I don't want to watch a strawman, even of people I don't like because then I have to watch the views of people I don't like in my entertainment, something I use to relax from that. Some people don't like the weaver stars from Chibiusa's Picture Diary as antagonists but give them credit at least their not trying to sexually harrass men, and they actually have magic powers and connection to the lore of the world being living stars. They're not just two human women being like "ewwwww boys." That's barely an exaggeration for Taku's character. He's my least favorite character in the series.
Death Analysis: The Dragon of the Water, Planet-Restoring, Wudai Warrior, Scuriophobic Big-Headed Little Man, the Xiaolin Monk Omi! Gong Yi Tanpai!
1500 years ago the Earth was plagued by an evil witch known as Wuya wielding a dark power called the Heylin. She was opposed by a Xiaolin Monk of the rank of Grandmaster Dragon, known as Dashi. Dashi with the creation of hundreds of mystical power items called the Shen Gong Wu was able to seal away Wuya and send the forces of the Heylin into dormancy. To protect the world from the evil forces of the Heylin, generations of Xiaolin monks have been trained in Dashi's legacy. When Wuya was unsealed in the modern day, the newest generation of Xiaolin Dragons in training were gathered to collect the Shen Gong Wu and stop Wuya and any other Heylin force from conquering or destroying the world. First of this newest generation of Xiaolin Dragons in training was Omi, dragon of the water.
Omi was found by a Xiaolin Temple as a baby without any information of his parentage or the reason he was left there. Growing up among the Xiaolin temple surronded in the Xiaolin Arts, Omi dedicated himself wholly to the pursuit of mastery of the Xiaolin Arts. Naturally a perfectionist and with a proud heroic spirit, Omi pushed himself through relentless training for the day he would become a chosen one, the Dragon of the Water, the whole time holding no interest in the outside world.
However the outside world would come to him instead. Three other monks in training; Clay Bailey, Kimiko Tohomiko, and Raimundo Pedrosa, came from around the world to the temple. Initially judgemental of their strange outside ways, he nonetheless quickly found friendship and began to embrace their odd ways, only to find to his shock that they were also dragons in training like him, of the other elements. They would eventually become not just his friends, but the family he never had and the manifestations of the strange world he thought he had no connection too but was instead finding his place within.
Chi Manipulation:
The Xiaolin battle using their chi, a philosphical abstraction used to represent the invisible flow of energy or potency within a body being roughly analogous to the western concept of "spirit" or "vital force". By manipulating the chi within them, gathering it through the body, they can enhance their stats to superhuman levels, something Omi signifies by shouting his Xiaolin Element "Water". At several points it's shown that while the Monks can perform certain superhuman feats without aforementioned invocation likely due to the chi already coursing through their body, they can also gather their chi to boost their power even higher for a small temporary burst (13:30)
The Xiaolin Dragons specifically have chi associated with their element hence why they gather their chi by invoking said element. This allows them via their chi to manipulate their element and also seems to be associated with their fighting style resembling their element. On rare instances, the monks will project their chi directly in the form of light and energy instead of channeling it through their elements or bodies. When Omi builds up his chi, the dots on his forehead can light up (4:30) with enough brightness that they can illuminate a cavern. (6:13) When the Monks use a stronger form like Dragon x Kumei they automatically emanate a light (14:02) and created an invisible energy barrier that destroyed the Wuyabots. (2:25) Omi may be able to replicate the technique "Repel the Beast" performed by Master Monk Guan which gathers chi energy and fires it out as an energy wave from ones first, able to hurt someone as strong or stronger then Guan. (18:30)
At strong enough levels chi can outright warp reality, although this is not something Omi can normally do. His power source being his chi also gives him a limited transmutation resistance as even when turned into a cat, he can access his metaphysical chi and perform the same superhuman feats he normally could. (18:03) This is similar to, for instance, in Dragon Ball Z when Buu turns Vegito into candy and Vegito beats him up anyway because his ki remains the same. Because Omi's powers come from his life energy, changing his physical body does not diminish his abilities.
Power:
Omi's power grows massively over the series and is also subject to some fluctation as his physical base is not neccesarily the same as the power he can rise to in combat via his chi used for most of the series via team formations. At the beginning of the series, Omi was clearly the physical superior to his teammates having far more intense and longer martial arts training. These same dragons in training were at the very beginning of the series able to destroy Jack Spicer's "Jackbots", robotic warriors, before even knowing how to use their Chi. (12:16) Not only could Omi casually destroy these Jackbots without using his chi kicking one's top off and using it as a discus to decapitate another (8:02) but with a single flick of his finger destroyed ice (8:27) that Jack Spicer only hurt his hand trying to break. (8:20) This same Jack Spicer was able to swap hands perfectly with his robot copy of himself (17:20) again showing he's about on par with one of his robots. These robots have included his drillbots stated to be able to "turn this mountain to rubble" immediatly before striking each other several times and not breaking to pieces. (13:27) No timeframe is stated but given Jack's character for impatience its likely this is meant in a short period of time. Jack Spicer as well as Dojo, who is also not meant to be much of a physical threat normally, along with the dragons in training were able to withstand the destruction of Wuya's citadel calced into the megaton range.
This was all before the monks began heavy training to combat Jack's sudden increase in power (really the enhanced speed of his robot duplicate). Post-Heavy Training Omi was able to tank a direct strike from the Fist of Tebigong (reversed onto him with the Reversing Mirror) with only a black eye (5:00) when earlier an indirect shockwave to the ground a few meters away from Omi completely knocked him off his feet. (7:30) Then all 4 of the Dragons reach the rank of Dragon Apprentice. At that point, they unlocked "the next level" of signature moves and can use the Dragon x Kumei Formation which draws out their chi bolstering their physical and elemental powers. (19:46) While at first they couldn't use their Dragon x Kumei correctly due to improper technique (2:55), they would spend the season training to refine their Dragon x Kumei under Master Fung to begin to bring out their chi ability on the path to graduating from Xiaolin Apprentices to becoming full Wudai Warriors.
During the one year training (1:18) as Xiaolin Apprentices they take on a truly staggering number of threats to the world to the point that it starts getting commented on with statements like Raimundo saying "is it just me, or does 'the fate of the world' rest on us a lot?" (5:57) In particular the Dragon x Kumei Formation Dragons faced down the Fearsome Four, comprised of the powerful Heylin Demon Mala Mala Jong multiplying himself into 4 copies, fighting them evenly. (16:00) The Fearsome Four are stated to be able to destroy the world a few points during the episode (15:30) and a single Mala Mala Jong earlier was considered an unstoppable threat by the monks' master Fung in season 1 when Mala Mala Jong was weaker, though he was able to somewhat contend with it. (11:37) But by far the strongest threat was the greatest of the Heylin Warriors, Chase Young.
Chase Young, the prince of the darkness is a Heylin Warrior who has defeated many warriors for 1500 years turning them into wildcats. During the second season, he trained Omi in secret, as part of his plan to manipulate Omi to his side, during which it became clear the two had many parallels as honorable but arrogant warriors needing to be the best no matter what, which drove Chase Young to his fall to evil. Despite the many threats to the world within the second season and his inventention whenever anything would threaten him, he never worries of any threat and only acts to further his goal to manipulate Omi, showing that he is presented as a threat of a tier beyond any of the common episodic threats to the world. Chase's wildcats alone are able to push Master Fung (11:00), exhausting him after they overwhelmed the mid-season 2 Dragon x Kumei Formation Apprentices (10:05) signifigantly after the Fearsome Four fight. Despite this, at the end of the arc the Dragon x Kumei Formation apprentices, the climax of their power as apprentices, has them barrel through Chase's wildcat warriors that exhausted their Master Fung without effort and pushed back Chase Young across the Showdown arena. (18:05) While not hugely injuring him, this is an incredibly impressive achivement.
Chase Young is one of the strongest characters in the series and of the modern period is very likely the strongest villain, only under Peak Wuya 1500 years ago. He is completely unintereted in Shen Gong Wu as he very consistently calls them weak compared to his own power. He has called them "little magical toys," (4:05) "trinkets," (9:25) and a "crutch for true power." (8:57) He has little interest in them for "true strength comes from within" (11:22) and easily overwhelms Jack Spicer when he tries to use wu against Chase. (16:30) There is actually a little contradiction here as Wuya claims that with the Shen Gong Wu, Chase Young will be bowing to her (5:25) but contextually seems to be implying Wuya using them to somehow regain her old power rather than just overpowering Chase. This is quite an impressive claim as the Shen Gong Wu are the mystical power objects controlling the forces of good and evil since ancient times. Their powers are said to be able to plunge the Earth into 10,000 years of darkness, (8:15) an even more impressive claim given that Wuya describes the Shen Gong Wu as numbering in the hundreds (11:25) suggesting that this would be done by less then 1,000 Wu. They are collectively described as the most powerful objects in the world (5:15) including hypothetically the Wudai Weapons and the reality-warping treasure of the blind swordsman.
The Shen Gong Wu are also able to initiate a Xiaolin Showdown, a mystical combat where reality shifts that initiates when two warriors stalemate over a Shen Gong Wu. One Showdown warped the rings of Saturn into a battlefield. (17:55) Saturn's Rings contain 1.54e19 kilograms, the weight of smaller moons, but is spread over a diameter of 270 megameters, a size nearly 1.9 times that of Jupiter, largest planet in the Solar System. Another showdown created an entire dimension inside the video game "Goo Zombies 4" that contained it's own distant moon. (15:50) While possibly a visual effect for the game, everything else in the game was made real so assuming it was real, the distance between Earth and its moon is 384.4 megameters, nearly 2.7 times the diameter of Jupiter. The feat may be even higher if you think the moon is real as the mass-energy of the real world moon is over 1.577 Ninatons worth of energy. Another Shen Gong Wu, the Lunar Locket was used by an episodic villain to create an eternal eclipse and freeze the world, and when Omi won the Lunar Locket and returned the moon to proper motion the energy of the Wu was calced at ~3.6e35 Joules or 86 Yottatons. Chase Young considers the Wu and their power basically irrelevant to him and doesn't participate in the episodic battles for them despite his constant surveilance for potential threats. Chase himself was able to with a single strike split the world in two, calced at various levels from double digit Yottatons to double digit Ninatons. Yet the Dragon Apprentices were able to push him back, mildly damaging him.
This actually makes particular sense for Omi. Over the course of the second season, the Dragon Apprentices train to harness their potential, their chi, so they can become Wudai Warriors. Omi's raw potential is a central recurring motif of the season, arguably a central theme. From the end of the very first episode of the second season, Grandmaster Dashi strongly implies he knows Omi will rise to the rank of a Grandmaster Dragon saying "Omi, you can do a LOT of things when you're a Grandmaster Xiaolin Dragon. You'll see, someday." (20:55) At the midpoint of the season during the above Lunar Locket incident Raksha summons the Moon down to Earth at relativistic speeds to protect from Omi's water, which doesn't immediatly flow back, and which when it does flow back at Omi, he easily redirects himself with his technique (18:40) suggesting his chi might already be rivaling a Shen Gong Wu. The climax of the arc at the end of the second season, and the start of the third involves Omi's chi being restored to him, and with it the Earth being restored from Chase Young splitting it in half earlier, reality warping back to normal at relativistic speeds (giving Omi a form of limited reality-warping). (18:30) In fact the overarching arc of the second season is Chase manipulating Omi to his side because he could see Omi rising to meet his potential that would soon allow him to match Chase himself, forcing Chase to either gain control of Omi or destroy him before that happened. (5:43) Given that Omi was a character who could be seen to have grandmaster potential from as early as the season 2 opener, would soon force Chase to either destroy him or turn him evil, arguably rivaled the water-controlling power of a Shen Gong Wu directly by the midpoint of the season, and his chi actually succeeded in pulling the Earth back together at relativistic speeds while undoing all damage to it, him unlocking even a fraction of his true potential for even a second explains the massive jump and explains his ability to contend with Chase slightly.
After the battle with Chase, the monks graduate from Xiaolin apprentices to Wudai Warriors. As Wudai Warriors, Omi and the others were sent on a wudai quest where they had to travel to Chase Young's "land of nowhere" to find the bird of paradise without Shen Gong Wu relying on their elements. They succeed, unlocking their greater Wudai elements through their virtues of Courage, Loyalty, Strength, and Kindness (18:18) The new power unlocked within them raised their base power considerably to the extent that Master Fung says whoever finds the bird of paradise will recieve powers like they have never known (2:30), strongly implying their base is above the Dragon x Kumei from Season 2, which is relatively consistent feat-wise. Wuya also says that the power of the bird of paradise can crush mountains, dry up seas, even split the world in two, although admits that this power may just be a rumor. (4:42) It being able to split the world in two may be a reference to the feat Chase performed a few episodes ago, another indication that their new wudai elementals can somewhat rival Chase's power. They succeed in the Wudai quest, with Omi leading the others in focusing on their new and improved wudai powers in unison to activate "Wudai Orion Formation." (16:25)
Wudai Orion is a pretty massive amp to their existing power that brings them over the power level of the strongest characters of the modern period. The Heylin Demon Hannibal Bean was able to easily block the wudai elements of the Wudai Warriors in base (17:58) and was able to evenly melee Chase Young. (18:30) Chase considers Hannibal his "true enemy" (7:40) and when Hannibal was unleashed into the human world Chase calls him "the greatest evil" and says it is "far worse" then "end of the world time" (20:16) cementing him as on Chase's tier rather then the episodic planetary threats tier. Despite this Wudai Orion Omi is able to defeat Hannibal in combat (16:35) and Wudai Orion Kimiko was able to easily overpower Partially-Sealed Wuya (16:20) who, while not as strong as Chase and Hannibal, was tough enough to easily overpower the elemental Shen Gong Wu (3:10)
In preparation for dealing with Hannibal Bean, the monks were sent for heavy training under Master Monk Guan, the rival of Chase Young on the side of the Xiaolin, and a disciple of Grandmaster Dashi. (3:20) This training was completed so presumably Guan thought they were ready to battle Hannibal without Wudai Orion if need be, which does seem consistent with the few showings this late series Omi has. Omi was able to battle the evil alternate timeline Master Monk Guan briefly, although he spends most of it just dodging his attacks, confused why they're fighting and not fighting back. (3:25) That might suggest Omi has reached Guan's, and subsequently Chase's, level in his base or at least rivaling. Omi is a peer to Kimiko who disgused as Jack Spicer easily took numerous blows from Chase Young and Hannibal. (17:14) Omi is also able to perfectly equal and seemingly overpower Chase Young in battle 1500 years ago when he was still a noble warrior (2:50) a scene whose purpose is seemingly to again parallel these two warriors, promising warriors full of potential who endanger the world in their need to be the strongest. Omi "only" being able to match Chase Young of 1500 years ago may seem like an anti-feat however that doesn't really fit with the feats as Omi was already somewhat strong enough to be considerable to modern day Chase, and grew far stronger then he was, so it makes no sense for Chase to be far weaker and Omi to be exactly as strong. However an alternative possibility is that in exchanging his soul for "eternal youth" (13:25) Chase's powers remain eternally as his young self, never deteriorating but also not allowing for growth, symbolically destroying his own potential. There are other explanations you can posit, but I think that makes most sense for why Chase doesn't seem to be stronger then he was 1500 years ago and doesn't really affect the feats. You could also just say Omi was winning the whole time or he was holding back against the person he's trying to keep from turning evil.
An additional interesting statement young Chase makes is saying he has no reason to turn to the Heylin, as he will "soon" be a Xiaolin Dragon. (4:24) The rank of Xiaolin Dragon is the highest rank of the Xiaolin, the rank of Grandmaster Dashi, and is above even Shoku Warrior suggesting Omi might have been equaling a Shoku Warrior level character, which does make sense as all 4 of the Wudai Warriors were being considered for the graduation to Shoku Warrior, Omi included, implying they may be nearing that level already. However this brings up a possible scaling...I'm not saying this definitely, but it's possible the Xiaolin High Tiers may be somewhat relative or have power somewhat signifigant to Grandmaster Dashi and Peak Wuya. Chase Young was confident he would soon be a dragon, suggesting that he is a near-grandmaster tier fighter. Dashi also brought his acolytes Guan and Chase to battle Wuya, suggesting their power is at least somewhat relative. (2:30) Compare for instance, Master Fung sending the Xiaolin Dragons in training away with the Shen Gong Wu when Mala Mala Jong attacked the temple, knowing they could do nothing directly to Mala Mala Jong. Dashi also created the Shen Gong Wu, which number in the hundreds, to use against Wuya suggesting their combined power is at least somewhat relevant to Wuya (1:22) yet Chase views indivudal wu as nothing but toys, suggesting that he's not thousands of times weaker then Dashi and Wuya. Finally Wuya is strongly implied to have had her powers in the alternate timeline by her usage of magic to summon minions (17:37), something she explictly can not do with her powers sealed. (9:43) Raimundo fights her directly along with Evil Guan and Chase as well as Hannibal (18:05) which may not mean much since this is alternate timeline Raimundo, but you can argue they shouldn't be many orders of magnitude different. If this is true it could be a serious possible upgrade, considering their feats. I say this not as a definite, but merely as a "possible" level.
While most of the Xiaolin and Heylin forces are shown generally fighting on a planetary scale, with the high tiers doing so casually, with massive speed, or to large planets, Wuya and Dashi's conflict extends to the stellar range. Wuya upon awakening to her full creates her insignia on the Sun alongside reality warping the world. (4:20) Wuya was passively maintaining this, with the world being restored at her defeat, including the Sun, showing that this was a relatively casual feat. (18:33) During the Xiaolin Showdown between Omi and Grandmaster Dashi, where the showdown is caused not by a Shen Gong Wu but by Grandmaster Dashi who "makes the rules," the entire Sun itself is turned into a Taijitu. (18:25)
If this is just the surface of the sun it's an even higher low stellar feat, or it could just outright be star level. In one late episode, Omi attains a strange destructive power from mastering the 4 elemental Shen Gong Wu together and was forced to leave the temple because his passive energy was messing things up. Hannibal strove to take this power using a machine to take this power claiming with it he would become "the most destructive force in the universe." (14:00) This normally wouldn't apply to anything as it's an odd one episode buff that nobody has at the end of the episode, but the Sphere of Yun, a Shen Gong Wu that creates an impenetrable capturing bubble was able to completely and easily tank this energy. (12:47) It's not too far out to think that Dashi and Peak Wuya scale above this random one-off power, that was derived from mastering 4 elemental Shen Gong Wu that Dashi created and was contained completely by another Shen Gong Wu Dashi created. The cosmic events of the universe are myriad with many releasing energy that could destroy the largest stars or entire star systems. The quark-star going nova is estimated to release an energy of 10e47 Joules or 1 KiloFoe. The collisions of black holes can be even more energetic events and there are ocassionally even greater events like the Ophiuchus Supercluster Explosion, an eruption of energy 390 million lightyears from Earth that was measured as 50 GigaFoe, or 50 billion supernova. To rank alongside the most destructive forces of the universe, even for a moment, would necessitate star system level power, if not much higher.
He's also a real champ about getting kicked by cows into the distance.
Longevity/Stamina:
Xiaolin Dragons have enhanced stamina, drawing from their chi energy, with Omi's being especially potent, training for rigorous hours without any sign of strain. He and the other monks searched the Earth atop Dojo for days, everyone else was tired except for Omi. (4:35) By the end of the series his stamina is likely at least similar to Master Mong Guan's who fought Chase Young for days. (12:24) This is potentially linked to the Xiaolin warriors' longevity.
When Omi says he waited for 1500 years, the others are shocked but ask questions related to why he isn't an old man, rather than asking how he survived (10:20), suggesting that living to 1500 isn't impossible for them. This is consistent with Guan and Chase surviving for 1500 years, even without the effects of the eternal youth-giving Lao Mang Lone, seemingly not even getting much older in appearence. It's arguably somewhat contradicted with "Old Omi" only coming from 80 years in the future, although even in that future Master Fung, who is an old man in the present time, is still alive, just older.
Cold Resistance:
Omi withstood the cold of being frozen for 1500 years. He describes it as "very cold." but isn't negatively affected by it dramatically. (11:15)
Non-Physical Interaction/Water Walking:
On numerous points it seems that various skilled martial artists, Omi included, walk or hop along water as though it was a solid. (14:00) (10:10) (17:00) (19:20) The guardian of the treasure of the blind swordsman walks on lightning, but I'm not sure if Omi would scale to him. (18:15)
The wudai warriors also fight a ghost at one point, I think. It's not said its a ghost but this phantom looking ancient cowboy comes out of a picture during the quest for the Wudai weapons, and they fight him just fine. (4:40) This may be an inconsistency with them being unable to affect Wuya earlier, or it's possible that its an ability they gained from their Wudai rank. More toonforce-y, Omi was able to grab his own thoughtcloud. (7:00) I don't believe he could use this aggressively as he only ever does it once to his own, but it does support that Omi can interact with intangible objects.
Speed:
Omi is a warrior focused on mobility and is fast even for his tier. Even non-fighters have shown the ability to move at massively hypersonic speeds. Jack was able to react to and move in time with the Thorn of Thunderbolt after it was fired. (13:18) Dojo not only regularly transports the monks all over the world quickly, but once brought them to the "mall of the world" while Katnappe was in the process of robbing it with the Golden Tiger Claws. (13:10) This level of speed is relatively low tier for the monks. Even an early Clay, whose element is Earth and so is strongly implied to be the slowest of the Dragons (2:07) was able to recognize and avoid the lightning from the Eye of Dashi after it was fired. (2:07) Omi is far faster then them, even early series. Jack Spicer can move in time with the Thorn of Thunderbolt but Omi was able to catch up him despite him having a headstart while Omi was wearing the heavy encumbering Two-Ton Tunic and Jack was using the mobility-boosting Mantis Flip Coin. (18:23) And despite Jack having a headstart and using the mobility-boosting Monkey Staff, Omi catches up to him off-screen despite having to move slowly to keep the wind from making him spill a drop of water. (11:20) and (14:53) Dojo might be able to easily take the Dragons anywhere in the world but Omi can nimbly avoid evil amped Dojo in combat. (17:25) The other monks could dodge lightning, but Omi can do it casually...with his eyes closed. (17:33) Even when shrunk to the size of a bug, Omi runs at the same speed as the gigantic Cyclops, who was stronger then the Monks physically. (17:32)
Even an early Omi is likely superior then Tubbimura who maintained the same pace as the Serpent's Tail. (10:52) The Serpent's Tail, a Shen Gong Wu noted for its speed (10:40) grants intangibility, and which brought Omi through the entire Earth's diameter several times in quick succession. (15:33) To cross the Earth's diameter in seconds requires speed thousands of times the speed of sound. In Tubbimura's introductory episode, Raimundo, probably the second fastest of the Dragons, moves dramatically faster then him, propeling himself in with wind, planting a teasing kiss on Tubbimura's mask before leaping out of the way of Tubbimura's sword swing easily. (6:08) Despite this, Xiaolin apprentice Omi blitzes a far faster Raimundo. Raimundo was wearing the Crystal Glasses which grants precognition, and was effortlessly dodging Omi's strikes by knowing what was going to happen before it did, before Omi just suddenly takes them before Raimundo can react. (8:55) and (9:25) Mala Mala Jong can obviously react to the Serpent's Tail, which is why they couldn't use it to steal his heart as he would blast them with lightning before they could. (13:00) Despite this, while he did no damage to them besides mildly indenting one of their boots, Xiaolin apprentice Omi was able to clearly blitz the Fearsome Four (11:50) and later avoided the strikes from two of them while in a precarious position. (19:25)
This is the level of speed Omi would have for most of the series, but also brings me to a common misconception. An early Shen Gong Wu is introduced called the "Shard of Lightning" which grants one lightspeed (3:18). When Jack uses it, the dragons seem absolutely frozen relative to him and he messes with them easily. (10:15) From this people have concluded lightspeed is some kind of absolute maximum speed for the verse. However I think it's pretty unfair and irrational to use this one early Wu, used in one episode against the monks before they even use Dragon x Kumei for the first time, and which the feats suggest they scale past. Even within the Shard of Lightning's introductory episode, when the Dragons use the shard of lightning, while they are clearly much faster than him, Master Fung walking into the room is still visible and clear in comparison to their lightspeed, suggesting Master Fung is not numerous orders of magnitude slower. (19:58) Not only do the Dragons eventually surpass their master, this was his casual walking speed. When Jack uses the Shard against them in early season 2, he beat them up and embarrased them while they were relatively frozen compared to him. Something very similar to this happens late in season 2 (8:38), really Chase Young using a memory erasing Shen Gong Wu, and they don't even consider the Shard of Lightning as a possibility, probably because it could not longer do that to them.
The Shen Gong Wu themselves are able to create effects that are much faster than lightspeed. A Showdown takes a basketball court into deep space in seconds (16:05), takes the warriors to a lava-made arena in space (5:00), and takes a train the warriors are on to Saturn in 15 seconds. (17:50) At their closest Earth and Saturn are 1.2 trillion meters away, a distance that would take speeds over 266 times lightspeed to cross in 15 seconds. At their furthest distance of 1.7 trillion meters, it would take speeds over 378 times lightspeed. Omi can not only engage in fisticuffs with people who consider the Shen Gong Wu trickets and toys, but while slower was actually able to somewhat fight Raimundo using the Fancy Feet including blocking several strikes (15:47), a Shen Gong Wu which makes one "faster than anything in the world" (1:05), including neccesarily the shard of lightning, light itself, and probably the power of the Xiaolin Showdowns above. The only argument I can think against this is that this was a deception by Raimundo, but the entire plan was for Raimundo to make the early fight look as hopelessly one-sided as possible so Guan and Hannibal would increase their bet. I'm also not even sure when using the Fancy Feet one CAN go anything less than the fastest thing in the world.
Levitation:
Omi at one point starts levitating over the water. It's not explained, he just spins around and suddenly is hovering over it. (13:48) He also has more conventional toonforce levitation where he can stay in the air so long as he doesn't look down. (4:40)
Agility/Balance:
Omi's fighting style is stylized after his element water and as such is known for his graceful agile fighting style. He is known for his fighing similarly powered enemies by avoiding their strikes and manuvering around to throw them off-balance while he remains balanced. Omi's balance is good enough that he can walk on two fingers, considers walking on three fingers to be "for beginners" (4:22) and can balance on his head so well he sleeps meditating on his spherical head. (4:27) He can walk on the walls and even the ceiling well enough to want to teach it (3:37) Omi used his agility to cause 4 seperate opponents to run into and crash into each other. (17:55) His agility is proportional to his fighting skill due to his fighting skill being so heavily intertwined with his graceful fluid fighting style.
Skill:
Omi is obsessive and perfectionist about his training. The series proper begins showing his dedication to his training, practicing his martial arts in the rain (2:10) and that he refused to stop training because his Lotus Strike due to ending 1/8th of an inch (0.3175 centimeters) to the left. (2:30) In the second episode he goes through a difficult obstacle course 8 seconds faster then Raimundo but is angry with himself losing one quarter of a second on the sandbags. (1:37) and is later positively gleeful about the idea of him and the other dragons bonding over "rigorous training." (1:25) He eventually gets trained by Chase Young, Master Mong Guan the most skilled warriors in the world, and even Grandmaster Dashi, the most skilled character in the series, trained Omi to not simply do the expected. (20:42)
Omi regularly demonstrates combat skill feats of various magnitudes, extending even into the dramatically superhuman. After having his entire body engulfed by a debillitating goo, Omi wins a showdown with Jack using only his mouth. (6:00) He likely is similar in skill by end of series to his master who displayed a very similar skill feat, fighting even when paralyzed and in a wheelchair using only his mouth to give motorized commands except that was against Chase Young, notably frustrating him more then any point prior in the series. (7:30) Speaking of Chase, when he is introduced, he's vastly more skilled than the Dragons including Omi. (10:40) Yet later Omi and Chase work in perfect synchronicity (15:46) and eventually manages to outskill Chase, seemingly innovating a move out of nowhere. (17:16)
Omi also demonstrates more specific skills. The dragons are trained to manuever in dangerous situations blindfolded (4:50) as well as practice handing each other a lit torch while jumping around and blindfolded. (1:30) After missing several times, Omi actually does hit the Golden Tiger Claw at the center of the Earth (8:13) which is actually a really good feat of aiming, given the sheer size of the Earth compares to Omi and the Golden Tiger Claws. Omi mastered the Orb of Tornami, a Shen Gong Wu that requires much discipline to master (1:17) and easily used the Tangle Web Comb, despite it requiring absolute focus to use. (18:05) Omi is also skilled in stealth, able to "blend into the shadows." (3:35) His stealth is good enough that he can drop down and exchange the corrupting Lao Mang Lone soup for pea soup right in front of Chase Young without being noticed with only Dojo's card trick for distraction. (5:50)
Techniques:
Through his skill Omi has learned numerous named techniques. Many of these are unknown in function and are mostly known as names, but several Omi use repeatedly to the point of becoming iconic moves of his. In melee Omi uses the leopard attack, a physical scratching attack. (6:43) (15:30)(9:57) He also uses monkey tree assault which....seems to just be a fancy name for hopping up a tree. (15:42) Omi however primarily uses an extended melee range form of combat combining his martial skill with his hydrokinesis as Dragon of the water to create a watery assault. He can build his chi to perform the ancient and fearsome "Tsunami Strike-Water" where he spins around creating a localized cyclone around him with surrounding water. (13:00), This was strong enough to destroy ice capturing him (16:32) and when Raksha summoned the moon to Earth at relativistic speeds to push back Omi's water, Omi used the Tsunami Strike to launch the water back defeated Raksha. (18:47)
Upon reaching the rank of Xiaolin Apprentice, Omi learned the ability to perform the "Tornado Strike", a technique which conjures his element from his hands in a stream to overwhelm an enemy. It comes in two variations; water and ice. Tornado Strike's water was able to overpower Mala Mala Jong's water, knocking it back (16:35) and was able to summon a building sized water tornado with it. (13:58) Omi can use it to boost his mobility, as a form of water-based propulsion, using it to rise into the air (3:15) and propeling him forwards combined with his agility to make a Fist of Tebigong holder strike himself in the back. (11:53) He also uses it to draw liquid water out of steam and knock down one of the Fearsome Four (19:32) The attack also has an ice variant "Tornado-Strike Ice" which creates streams of ice in a tornado pattern (4:48) and can freeze the surroundings. (13:13)
Upon reaching Wudai Warrior, Omi gained a final elemental technique "Wudai Neptune", but that crosses over with his general Hydrokinesis.
General Hydrokinesis:
Omi can manipulate water in general via calling out his element "Water." While the basic channeling of his chi lacks the potency to be used as a weapon like his techniques, it can be used in a great versatility of ways. He can command the water to fall (18:43), or to rise (18:18). He can use the water to push enemies as strong as himself around (19:00) and propel himself quickly and agile-y, even somewhat levitating through the air by controlling water he's within. (19:22) He was able to engulf himself in a long streak of water that destroyed giant robots of Jack's (13:07) and conjure floating water and shaping it for the tracking leaf. (14:34) His water control is versatile enough to perform any basic action he might need it for. However it would improve even further upon mastering his elemental powers. (4:10)
His ultimate technique is Wudai Neptune-Water, a technique that is the apex of both his martial skills and his hydrokinesis, potent enough to be used as a combat technique but with the versatility of his general hydrokinesis. Wudai Neptune can flood an arena with such force as to shake Clay and Kimiko indirectly (16:35) and was able to outright reverse the waters of the flood Shen Gong Wu the Orb of Tornami. (18:32) With Wudai Neptune Omi could put out a forest fire (13:46) and simply stopped the flow of a waterfall. (6:05) With his Wudai Neptune Omi could create constructs out of water including tree-length fists to strike (14:10) and has enough precision and fine control of it to clean dishes with it. (7:07) Wudai Neptune also has an ice varient: Wudai-Neptune Ice which can create and control ice as easily as water, creating an icicle shower attack (1:20) and in fact won the final Xiaolin Showdown in the series by using Wudai-Neptune Ice to freeze a tower structure to stabilize it and save Dojo. (18:25)
Shimo Staff:
Upon reaching the rank of Wudai Warriors, the Xiaolin Dragons went on a quest to gain their wudai weapons, magical weapons that reflect them. Omi's is the Shimo Staff, a small ice staff that can change its forms to many different weapon forms (14:33) much like a certain small monk who is stronger than he appears and who has seemingly unending potential within. The Shimo Staff can easily grow several meters long, reaching to the top of a building from the ground (14:00) and is durable enough to hold open the mouth of an enchanted T-Rex that was giving the monks difficulty. (16:45)
While Omi has used most Shen Gong Wu, they're a definite stretch for "standard equipment." That said there are a few exceptions. The clearest is the Orb of Tornami. Omi will regularly pull the Orb out of his robes to aid him and it is used nigh-exclusively by him after the first season, with the sole time it was used by someone else in season 3 he directly exclaimed in indignation and surprise "How did you get MY Orb?!" (17:20)
The Orb of Tornami contains a mighty flood (3:13) which when released quick floods the horizon even covering distant plateaus so they are no long visible. (13:25) Omi drawing his water from steam earlier suggests that his feats of creating water are actually drawing water from the air or environment to use which explains his synergy with the Orb of Tornami as it essentially fills the environment with usable water. He can channel his element through his orb to control the water as it comes out with "Orb of Tornami-Water" such as to specifically flood a ravine (3:15) or to create water of such force as to knock down two members of the Fearsome Four. (19:40) The Orb of Tornami's water can cool down lava naturally. (4:10) He can also channel ice through the Orb of Tornami to freeze things or make ice constructs like ice hats (10:28) or an ice bridge. (18:39)
Kaijin Charm:
The Kaijin Charm is one the four elemental Shen Gong Wu introduced very late in the series and only Omi ever uses, pretty clearly being an Omi item that would qualify for standard equipment. What it does it not very clear but it seems to amplify one's hydrokinetic abilities and enhance the power of the Shimo Staff. (3:03) Using Wudai Neptune and the Kaijin Charm Omi was able to manipulate water into various precise constructs including a DNA helix shape and a larger, talking, seemingly thinking Omi. (3:50) It's possible this could be used for duplication. He was able to use the Kaijin Charm and the Shimo Staff to cause the Shimo Staff to sprout into several icicle skewers to pierce through Jack's "impenetrable" bubble bots. (8:40)
Possibly the Black Beetle:
The Black Beetle is a Shen Gong Wu only used once, and that was by Omi. When lava was approaching their position, Omi pulled the Black Beetle out of nowhere causing Clay to comment "you sure do come prepared." You can view that as either him saying "You prepared for this mission to a high extent" in which case the Black Beetle wouldn't be standard or "you are a prepared person in general" in which case its a statement measuring how prepared he is normally and the Black Beetle might be standard equipment. The Black Beetle is a Shen Gong Wu that protects against intense heat. Whole sequence here: (18:00)
Armor:
The Xiaolin Monks get special armor around halfway through the series that appears on them when they are in a Xiaolin Showdown. They are extremely durable not ripping in any of the battles of the series even against powerhouses like Chase or Hannibal, with the sole example of any being damaged being the final showdown, supporting the possibility that the alternate timeline characters are stronger. (17:04)
Extrasensory Perception:
Master Fung states near the beginning of the series being a Xiaolin Dragon also means seeing the world in a different way (3:15) and says later part of becoming a Wudai Warrior is learning to see with your mind instead of just your eyes. (19:15) Being of the Xiaolin seems to give you a general spiritual sensing. Wuya's release was felt by the monks of the temple (7:00), the monks sensed a great evil (1:49), and Omi was able to sense Chase Young watching him. (7:20)
As mentioned above the Dragons also fought what appeared to be a ghost at one point and in one particularly odd incident could hear Raimundo calling out them in his dream, percieving his wudai form fighting in his dream and seeing his twin selves in his dream where its implied Raimundo helped them win. (18:18) (19:00) (19:40) I presume that their spiritual sense, able to sense directly the presence of things allows them to percieve things happening in the realm of counciousness like dreams, and so Raimundo's presence fighting "with" them spiritually and thinking of them in his dreams was what was being percieved. That said I'm not fully sure what to make of it.
Tiger Instincts:
Omi also has an additional sixth sense called the "Tiger Instincts." It requires an advanced training technique to harness the "inner" force. It is the ability to predict your opponent's next moves. (1:17) To harness the Tiger Instinct is to know what will happen before it happens. (1:45) Omi demonstrates the Tiger Instincts in numerous ways in its introductory episode such as picking cards, picking what cup the candy is under, and picking Shen Gong Wu to counter Raimundo's during training, even going so far as to refuse to pick a Wu knowing Raimundo will pick the Tangled Web Comb that Raimundo can not properly use which means he does not need to pick anything. (3:10) Omi was able to use this to resist Chameleon's stealth ability to disguise itself, by telling him she was acting strangely. I'm not really sure if this is a feat though because she was acting so obviously and comically unlike Kimiko it's moreso just a very mild common sense that something is off. (9:15) Omi later uses the Tiger Instincts to match Chase Young's moves blow for blow. (14:25)
Fourth Wall Awareness:
Raimundo makes a fourth wall joke and all the Dragons give a wink and thumbs up to the audience. (10:55)
Intelligence:
While Omi starts the series relatively ignorant of the world beyond the Xiaolin temple, his cognitive abilities are consistently quite impressive, particulary in some areas. While Omi can be impulsive and prefer to just honestly strike at his opponents, his planning and deception abilities, particulary for his age are quite advanced. Omi cleverly freezed himself in the past where Wuya's palace would rise, to travel 1500 years into the future (10:37), creatively tried to trap the Sapphire Dragon (13:35), and outwit the Evil Genius Jack Spicer by taking the water in his cup into his mouth and then expelling it back out so he could cross the desert without spilling a drop of his water. (15:08) He put earplugs in his ears before engaging Sibini preparing beforehand for Sibini trying to control him (15:38) and double-crossed the criminal Katnappe first showing he indeed learned the art of deception. (19:00) Also the Fountain of Hui overloaded Omi's brain with random information, something that was never undone, so now he just has a large amount of random trivia facts in his brain which may come up in a random situation. (13:30)
However Omi's greatest mental capability is his ability to quickly learn and adapt. Like the water itself which contains unseen depths, Omi's greatest strength has always been his sheer potential to learn and adapt to any challenge. From the beginning of the series, Omi demonstrates the ability to quickly learn and incorporate lessons from his friends (17:54), allowing him to win the first Xiaolin Showdown of the series, the point of the episode being Omi learning about the world from his friends. In a game of basketball, Omi was able to agile-y flip around and avoid Jack and his giant robot, getting baskets when less then an hour ago he thought basketball was a new form of martial art, (18:45) was called a cowboy as praise by Clay's strict rancher father within 24 hours of going to Texas (20:30) and after splitting into 5 Omi by the Ring of Nine Dragons whch divides your intellect, maturity, potential and being made so dumb and derpy he was barely cognizant still absolutely destroyed Jack's in a snowboarding competition without trying at all. (14:50) Despite probably never snowboarding before. Omi manages to replicate Chase Young's moves exactly after seeing them once (18:25) and its strongly implied Omi learns the technique "Repulse the Monkey" after seeing Chase perform it once. (15:08) and (16:00) And probably most impressively when Omi takes the other elemental Shen Gong Wu, he almost instantly masters all the other elements, things the others have spent all series mastering. (6:04)
Weaknesses:
Omi doesn't have too many physical weaknesses. He needs the other Dragons to intiate Wudai Orion Formation, but all his EoS feats are in base anyway, and Wudai Orion would just be some unknown amp on top of that. Unusually for a character as strong as him, and especially a water-themed one, he actually does need to breath. Some showdowns do go into space but I'm pretty sure they reality-warp the arenas to be survivable as normal humans like Jack Spicer and Jermaine tank them and Omi clearly needs the Gills of Hamachi to breath underwater. Omi's also reliant on his equipment and his ability to speak to use some of his abilities, although a lot of his abilities doesn't require those at all. His forehead lighting up with his chi can also sometimes be a disadvantage as it can give away his position when he's trying to be stealthy. (18:10)
More important are his many psychological weaknesses. He is bound by his honor (19:51), is impulsive and rash (17:06) and is characteristically naive to the world (10:00), represented by the series longest running gag, Omi's complete and total inability to use slang without messing it up. He can be incredibly gullible, letting Dojo out of his cage immediatly after Dojo tells him to not let him out of his cage no matter what (4:48) and being decieved three times in a row after being told they're in a race of deception (1:26). People tell him all the time that he doesn't believe everything he is told...and he believed them! (9:48) He is overdramatic (16:15), doesn't understand sarcasm (13:56) and is sexist due to the fact that almost all he knows about women came from an 11th century manual on women. (2:50) He is comically afraid of squirrels (2:40), and animals in general don't seem to like him. (1:50) He even got a rabbit to bite him. (2:22) The sole exception for some reason being this random spider. (19:55) He also gets enraged when someone mentions the size of his head. (7:10) It should be noted however that Omi got signifigantly better about most of these weaknesses over the course of the series.
Omi's biggest weakness and the source of many of the others is his pride and need to be the best. His friend Clay has described as "having more pride then a dog has fleas," (15:12) he regularly talked down to his teammates, especially Raimundo, (7:12) and his big head is a dramatization of him "having a big head" or being arrogant. While Omi is an extremely skilled warrior, his mental image of himself eclipses even his capabilities. Again however, this is not as much by end of series as he has developed over time.
Personality:
Xiaolin Showdown begins showing Omi's obsessive need to be the best; his relentless training, knowing nothing else initially but his life as a Xiaolin Dragon. In the first episode he is introduced to the outside world through his new friends, and quickly strives to learn from them as well to master this domain. In it, Omi's greatest weakness can be seen, his arrogance and need to be the best. In it, Omi's greatest strength can be seen; that like the water, he holds infinite potential within and can adapt himself to new circumstances. Omi consistently over the course of the series has the greatest belief in potential, as the youngest monk he has a childlike belief in the infinite potential for things to be more than they appear. His arrogance is his view of his own potential, and his ability to learn is his belief in the potential for other things and other people. Of the Xiaolin Dragons he alone believed in Jack Spicer's ability to be good, refused to believe Raimundo betrayed them, and suggested even to Chase Young that he might become good again.
Over the course of the series Omi is deliberately paralleled with Chase Young numerous times. They are mirrors of each other; honorable warriors who in their youth carried the potential to become a Grandmaster Dragon brought down by their arrogant need to be the best. Both spent their time cloisted away from the world, wanting to rely on themselves and their inner strength rather than on outside forces. But Chase Young in his need to be the best, destroyed his own Xiaolin Potential and sought instead to tear down any threats rather then build themselves up. The naive childish Omi is shown to be disturbed by his similarities with Chase, and that he might ever be like him. When the Xiaolin Dragons at the finale are given the choice to pursue a quest to demonstrate their qualifications to be the leader Omi chooses to try and bring Chase Young back to the side of good. To redeem Chase and his arrogant need to be the best, he symbolically strove to redeem his own failing, to show that his own need to be the best should qualify him for the rank of Shoku Warrior. In doing so he almost dooms the world just as Chase did.
This leads into the emotional climax of the entire series when the leader is selected to be Omi's former pupil Raimundo instead of him. As this happens Omi shrinks away, his greatest strength and his greatest weakness, his willingness to believe in others and his need to the best, warring within him. As Raimundo approachs him, Omi looks at him with tears in his eyes before getting a sad smile and bowing before his new master. In doing so, Omi showed he had indeed learned from his friends, instead of following in the path of Chase, he would travel with his new friends into their strange world and their strange new future together. Omi is the archetype of the thing not being that which appears, the small being the secretly strong. He represents the infinite potentiality of water and in his recognition of the potential for others to be the same, he truly succeeded in his quest to redeem his narcissism and self-absorption into a positive love for self-improvement and willingness to learn from others.

Potential Opponent:
Augus (Asura's Wrath):
Omi and Augus are both roughly in the stat range probably and have a fair bit of thematics, both being the former teacher who both came into conflict with their former pupil before eventually accepting that they had been outdone and outgrown. Both have a distinct size-changing melee weapon, are known for their proud warrior mentality, and love training and combat more then anything, although Augus is signfigiantly more bloodthirsty then Omi (more like Omi when he was controlled by the Heylin). Also Omi is the youngest monk who gets angry at people pointing out his size and youth while Asura taunts Augus by calling him "old man." I thought something funny could come of that.
