Superman is stronger then most think

Whenever a character gets downplayed (even by casuals) you see an inevitable rush eventually of people saying how a character is actually much stronger then you think and likewise when a character is wanked, you see eventually people criticizing and picking apart the evidence to bring them back down. This pendulum of power swings back and forth for any character analyzed enough, it seems growing closer and closer to an accepted midpoint until new evidence is shone on the subject matter, though given the sheer number of forums, this point can never be reached.

I think Superman right now is on the downplayed part of the pendulum swing as a response to certain shall we say high-profile few incidents of him getting wanked. People seem to think he's much weaker then his feats suggest and that despite how strong people in his own universe seem that like half of the other 6 members of the original JLA could beat him. Here are some misconceptions about how strong Superman is.

1: Power
You look on reddit and Superman is generally considered planetary level, or maybe a bit above that and while that is dipping on one end of the spectrum, few people take into account how powerful Superman is. Even with Rebirth I often say that he's universe level due to the fact that Pre-Crisis is now canon again but I feel that doesn't really do the Man of Steel justice. Let's look at his feats.

Superman, in one of his most famous Pre-Crisis feats pushed against the force of the Big Bang as well as destroyed a structure that survived the event.

How is that any different from universe level? My imaginary audience thinks to me. Here's the thing though. The Big Bang does not need to be just universe level if it has feats above that. While it CREATED the universe sure, different verses have it do other things as well. And the universe created by the DC Big Bang was MASSIVE, totaling over 100 trillion light years. As Rebirth has both Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis canon these two events should both be relevant. However the observable universe is only 93 billion light years long. Since that means the DC universe is over 10,000 times larger in diameter, it's three-dimensional volume is gonna be over 1.2 BILLION times the volume of the observable universe.

The other universal feats used for Pre-Crisis Superman are similarly casual. Darklord Maaldor feat? He created a universe merely by dying. Pre-Crisis Supergirl fought a universal reality-warper capable of controlling all the forces of the universe which should also be above baseline universal and almost killed a weaker version of the Anti-Monitor who even by that point was casually destroying universes.

Is Superman outright multiversal? I don't think so at the moment, but I think his pre-crisis feats demonstrate that he is above baseline universal.

2: Speed
I don't know why this is but a lot of the times the comparison being made in terms of speed is Superman and The Flash, which just not a fair comparison. Even there I don't think Superman does as badly as people seem to think.

First off scaling between DC Heroes is harder then you'd think because they tend to hold back for one reason or another, meaning directly scaling Superman to Flash or Flash to Superman is difficult since both hold back. In terms of direct feats however Flash is much faster. While that makes it seem like a cut and dry case, I think the specifics make it not as giant a difference as it seems.

Basically what it seems to me is Restrained Flash>Restrained Superman and Unrestrained Flash>Unrestrained Superman HOWEVER...Unrestained Superman>Restrained Flash and that is a really big deal.

Most people by now know of Flash's big cosmic gamblers feat, ie one of the fastest speed feats ever calculated at a whopping ~2.375e43 c. Some people will say "Wally was using external help at the time so the speed doesn't apply to him." There are several points people are missing about it though, namely this was during the time Wally was afraid of going too fast or getting sucked into the speedforce like Barry did. The feat while massive is never stated to have broken the speedforce barrier which is very important, and it's very likely in the context of the story's timeline placement that he wouldn't since he was completely afraid of entering the speedforce.

Image result for Trans-time velocity

At most he broke the Time Barrier which is much less then the speedforce barrier. Scaling Superman to this does not mean he is as fast as Wally because Wally by now is MUCH faster then this.

So does Superman scale to this? I would say yes.

In terms of Pre-Crisis, Superman has actually broken the speedforce barrier before

though unlike with Barry and Wally it was very difficult.

Recently DC has released the following ranking of the top 10 fastest speedsters

Considering how close Superman is in position to the Two Flashes, and being faster then characters described as being nearly as fast as the Flashs (Cheetah) or has made them push their limits (Black Racer) I think it's pretty consistent to say he's supposed to be that fast.

3: Hax
Common misconception is that Superman is merely a brick, no potent abilities, just raw power.

While Superman isn't the most hax character in fiction, he does have his own fair arsenal similar to a lot of the other JL Members.

Both his heat vision and his freeze breath have been shown to work on intangible enemies. He was also able to destroy an illusion by shouting

His heat vision or static electricity can affect spacetime as can merely his punches. If he can distort spacetime, that could be quite deadly in a no-holds barred fight as it could potentially displace an opponent's vital organs in space.

And what I think is his most powerful ability, his ability to erase a being from existence by equaling out their quantum strings with his voice, including the abstract entity Darkseid

And this is not even counting some of his other abilities that aren't really haxes or his counters to many haxes.

So yeah he's not say a Green Lantern or a Herald of Galactus in terms of versatility and number of haxes but he's not a complete brick either.

4: Intelligence
One of Superman's most underused powers. Superman has a lot of intelligence feats that show he is a massive supergenius. He can build a robot capable of planning millions of chess moves in a moment and then beat it in chess, learn a mermaid's strange language just by hearing it once, made a machine that granted people super powers and so on. Though his greatest intelligence feat is being able to compete intellectually with Brainiac, one of them being able to process information equal to many galaxies.

In combat that would be an immense advantage, able to plan out every potential scenario, every way in which a fight could turn out based on what action the user takes and choosing the optimal one.

Superman's intelligence is quite a strong advantage against most enemies that is even remotely fair for him.

TLDR: Superman...he's pretty strong.

How they Compare: Eris (Saint Seiya)

Of all the deities opposing the Good Goddess Athena governing human wisdom and civilization, none are said to be as malevolent as spiteful and sadistic Eris, the Goddess of Chaos and Discord. In her disdain for Athena she has come to threaten humanity on multiple occasions.

Eris as a Saint Seiya Goddess is very powerful!

Eris is the abstraction of discord, and so long as strife and conflict exist, she can reappear any number of times. Chaos is her natural domain. It is noted that with her apple of discord she can cause discord and strife amount people.

Her sheer power was so great that even in a weakened state she was able to put up a fight against Gold Saint Scorpio Milo and when she was sealed away by Athena at the edge of the universe, she was able to call evil souls to her from across the universe to strength and free her.

She is likely at least as strong as her brothers Thanatos and Hypnos who were so powerful that they were able to casually defeat the 5 Hades Arc Bronze Saints, and was strong enough to resurrect the evil half of Gemini Saga and strengthen him further, and he still serves her. This is rather notable as Gemini Saga's attack power with the Galaxian Explosion was so great as to be superior to the Starlight Extinction of Aries Mu which destroyed the universe of the Titan Iapetus.

Indeed given their fight it seems Eris is nearly as strong as the Goddess Athena herself. Athena was able to fight with limited success the Heavenly Emperor Hades who was able to casually maintain 3 universe sized dimensions with his divine cosmo.

In addition Eris should easily be as fast or faster as Capricorn Shura with the power of miracles, when he exceeded the initial inflation speed of the Big Bang requiring speeds of dozens of septillions of times the speed of light.

Though beyond sheer power, Eris has many other advantages.

As a Goddess Eris has control over the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th senses. The 6th sense known as mind is properly sapience but also when mastered gives abilities like telepathy, aura reading, teleportation, telekinesis, pre-cognition, astral projection and so forth. The 7th Sense grants the ability to perform miracles, acts which warp reality as well can replace any of the lower senses should they be disabled. The 8th sense grants control over life and death, such that one can live and maintain one's senses in the Underworld and can come back to life at will. Finally the 9th sense grants godhood, including powers like immortality and abstract existence.

In addition to all these Eris has more powers. She has incredible soul manipulation, able to call evil souls to her while sealed at the edge of the universe. She has the ability to destroy or manipulate matter and energy down to the atomic scale. As a Goddess, any non-divine attack launched at her will be reflected upon the user, and her presence passively disables the lower 6 senses.

Eris also has control over creation and destruction. She can at will create her dryads, her servants, or create bodies for disembodied souls and can also destroy opponents, erasing them from existence including on the astral plane.

She also has resistance to a large variety of abilities including time manipulation on a universal scale, atomic scale matter-energy manipulation, colds somehow even lower then absolute zero.

And with all that it is said that Eris' greatest strength is her cunning and manipulative nature. She is very good at sowing discord and discontent.

So how much discord could she cause in other universes.

In Marvel Comics, Eris would be roughly on par with a Cosmic Cube Level Entities. While her maximum power might be slightly higher then theirs, she would be very similar and have similar levels of versatility. Her abstract nature would also make her very difficult to defeat. Using her stronger abilities she might be able to beat a Celestial Level Entity one on one, though such is more speculative.

In DC Comics Eris would be a massive threat to the Earth, even Pre-Crisis or Rebirth, and not even major powerhouses like Hal Jordan or Doctor Fate would be likely to beat her one on one, though it is possible. Especially if she is subtle in her approach it would be very difficult to beat her, though if she is uncovered an assault by a large number of forces similar to her would probably defeat her.

In the Digimon multiverse, Eris would be similarly a large threat but not a potential verse-soloer. She would be very similar both in powerset and power level to one of the Seven Digital Demon Lords which can rapidly destroy Zones the size of universes. While that would be very strong, there would be still a number of high tier Digimon stronger then her.

In the Pokemon Multiverse, Eris would be near the top, and be able to defeat any of the 3; Palkia, Dialgia or Giratina in a one on one fight, however it would be difficult for her to defeat multiple at once and she still would likely not defeat Arceus in a direct fight.

In the Serial Experiments Lain Universe, Eris would be potentially able to solo, as she would be comparable in a fight to Lain herself, who by the end is the top tier. Though Eris would have vast difficult trying to actually effect or hurt Lain, the same would be true in reverse and the two would potentially stalemate for a long time.

I actually don't know much about the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy verse, but I was informed by someone who was knowledgeable on it then it's version of Eris would be comparable to the Saint Seiya Eris, which was surprising.

How they compare: Panther Zora

Panther Zora is the Big Bad of the Cutey Honey Franchise. This is the depiction of her from the original continuities' 3 manga series. While she doesn't have some of the most impressive accomplishments of her other canonicities such as merging with the evil of humanity's hearts or being the snake that tempted Adam and Eve, Panther Zora even in the manga was a formidable opponent!

Panther Zora was a witch-being from another dimension, full of spite and hatred for humanity. She turned panthers into the superhuman criminal organization known as Panther Claw to bring human civilization to ruin.

Panther Zora is very powerful! She granted Panther Claw Agents power enough to vaporize normal humans and destroy small buildings. Even from her dimension she was able to simply will a castle on Earth to destruction.  She is much more powerful in her own dimension. Here mere presence can create a magnetic field the size of a small island.

Panther Zora's power can be seen in her shapechanging. This shapechanging has allowed her to grow to the size of a small island or to become an entire mountain, and in her mountain form to create an entire laboratory space within herself.

She is also formidable in terms of speed. She was able to simply telekinetically will bullets to stop after they had already been fired and granted her Panther Claw Agents speeds to keep up with Cutey Honey who can dodge automatic fire.

As a skilled magic-user Panther Zora also has a vast variety of magical abilities. She can see into other dimensions with her clairvoyance and can spiritually project her spirit there.  She also has displayed telekinetic capacities as well as transmutation, turning panthers into her Panther Claw Agents. She also resurrected her Panther Claw Agents several times when they died at Honey's hands.

Panther Zora also has control of the elements and forces of nature. Her spiritual projection alone was the size of a skyscraper and called criminals and gang members from all over Japan to the area. Her spiritual presence also caused great darkness and possibly a storm. She caused a massive water sprout capable of propelling her island form at massive speeds that reached up into the clouds. In her mountain form even her breath created winds strong enough to destroy fighter jets.

She likely scales to the abilities she granted to her minions which would also giver her many other forms of elemental manipulation including fire manipulation and acid manipulation. She would also theoretically have the Duplication of the leader of Panther Claw Sister Jill.

With all that said, Panther Zora has two weaknesses. The first, while not very important is that she can not leave her dimension physically. She can only project into another dimension. A character with inter-dimensional range would thus be able to have that advantage on her. The more relevant one is that Panther Zora hates humanity and views them as weak and self-destructive. She underestimates the capacity of humans and anything humanoid, which has let them catch her off-guard on multiple occasions.

So how would the Panther Witch-God do in other universes?

In the Marvel Universe, Zora would qualify as a Mid Level Metahuman. She's relatively versatile for them, and she would be dangerous against most Metahuman Level entities due to her inter-dimensional range and powerful abilities if she takes it seriously, however on the flip side a high end street level fighter could actually beat her if she underestimates them due to their humanoid appearance and she doesn't use her shapechanging effectively primarily due to her speed disadvantage against opponents like Spider-Man or Captain America.

In the DC Universe, it would be fairly similar, being roughly on the level of a Beta Level Metahuman like Deathstroke or the Weather Wizard depending on how seriously she takes them. While most enhanced humans likely couldn't beat her since DC low tier speeds aren't as intense as Marvel low tier speeds in general, the sheer amount of magicians on the DC Earth would likely make it as dangerous overall.

In Dragon Ball Zora is an odd situation since by the time the verse gets inter-dimensional movement (Shukan Ido) they are all strong enough to casually stomp her physically. She would likely be a massive threat to Part 1 Dragon Ball who could physically stomp her agents but would have difficulty actually fighting her unless they use the Mafuba to seal her spirit while she is projecting it or using the Dragon Balls to get to her dimension. If they do so, she would be relatively powerful still but characters on the level of Piccolo Daimao or higher should be able to consistently defeat her in a physical battle with the only threat being transmutation.

Panther Zora would actually fit in relatively well in the Mermaid Melody verse. Her water manipulation is only about on par with the low tiers of the verse able to casually cause or stop powerful storms, yet she compensates by being massively more versatile. She would be much stronger then the Part 1 Mermaid Princesses and about as strong as the Part 1 Big Bad Gackto. She is probably stronger then the Mermaid Princess individually after being strengthened by Aqua Regina but wouldn't be able to beat all of them by herself by part 2. That said they would have little ability without the help of Mikeru or one of the old ones to gain access to her dimension, though Mikeru himself would stomp her being a much stronger dimensional manipulator.

In the Madoka-verse, Panther Zora would act essentially as a witch. While Zora can cause more destruction more efficiently then most witches on most of the realm and her relative power would be akin to high tier witches, her speed is low for the verse, meaning she would average at being only around the power of a low tier witch or a rookie mahou shojo. While it's possible she could kill an amateur mahou shojo, any veteran or relatively strong mahou shojo should be able to take her fairly consistently.

In the Princess Tutu verse, Zora would be a massive threat to most of the verse. She would easily have power comparable to greater then most of the verse, superior speed and relatively even abilities, outside of Drosselmeyer. That said given how nonthreatening the verse looks outside Raven, it's possible that the High Tiers of the verse could beat her working together.

In the Devilman Universe, also written by Go Nagai, Zora would qualify as a High Tier Demon, as the strongest of demons are mountain busters with similar levels of dark magic and versatility and given their demonic appearance her weakness likely wouldn't come into play. That said she would be much weaker then Satan, God or Devilman as Satan the weakest of those 3 is still able to casually destroy continents.

A good death...scene

Bit of a confession: I am a sucker for a great tear-jerking death scene. I adore them. However some death scenes leave me rather cold, and this seems to shock people. This is my explanation of what I love in death scenes, and what makes one great.

If you've read Scott McCloud's classification of art into 4 quadrants:

I would classify myself as a Classicist very clearly. I am drawn towards art for it's capacity to capture a transcendent experience. That probably sounds a bit abstract....

In other words, the two general greatest compliments I can give a piece are that it is meaningful and that is emotionally resonant and the two worst general insults I can give are their opposites that it is meaningless and that it is cold.

The greatest works of art to my taste are in the Classicist quadrant and are both emotionally resonant and meaningful which coalesce into being "Inspiring", the english word I most want to see be reflected. On the other hand I have a difficult time connecting to Iconoclast works because they often strike me as being full of meaninglessness and being cold.

I can enjoy the adjacent quadrants, and indeed some of my favorite works I would consider in there. If you take the Stanley Parable, that is very clearly a Formalist work. I find it very meaningful I would say, I could analyze it a lot (though it mocks that very action humorously). That said I don't have strong emotional reaction to it. It still is one of my favorite works. Formalist works can be like to me reading philosophy novels. I can find them very interesting and mentally stimulating but I don't very emotional reactions to them very much.

On the other hand I also love Shojo, and most of it is highly romantic Animist works. Tokyo Mew Mew is also one of my favorite works, and it's very strongly Animist, drenched in pathos and emotions, sometimes light fluffy emotions granted. I have a very strong emotional reaction to many parts in Tokyo Mew Mew like the development of Ichigo and Masaya's relationship, though for the most part I can't analyze it very much because for the most part it's fairly simple and to the point. Animist works are often like going to parties. I am introvert and not very interested in that kind of thing, but I can enjoy the liveliness of it and the sociability of it, especially if I like the people there (the characters)

The attainment of the ideal of art in my view thus combining the quality of meaningfulness, the ability of things in the story to mean and symbolize things with the quality of emotional resonance, the ability of the story to speak to my emotions. The union of the heart and the mind in other words. The transcendent quality of art is to uplift and relate the emotions of the heart to the great impersonal concepts understood by the mind.

So let us analyze three types of death scenes with this in mind and demonstrate why they get a different degree of emotionality from me each.

Type 1: The Low Tier Death Scene
Perhaps you know the comic reviewer Linkara? I agree with him on some things, and disagree with him on some others, but one area I definitely agree is his annoyance at shock deaths.

The low tier death scene is a scene with no purpose or meaning. A death scene that feels random and arbitrary does not make me sad. It makes me go "WTH"

Allow me to give an infamous example in the Magical Girl fandom. In the series Magical Princess Minky Momo which for the most part is a completely mundane cutesy magical girl series, Minky Momo gets hit by a truck and dies without any forewarning.

I don't feel particularly sad at that scene, because it's so WTH. There is no purpose behind it. And yes I know there is an out of universe reason, but in-universe there is no purpose or meaning. It is merely senseless tragedy.

Senseless tragedy makes us feel bad in the real world, because it is real people affected. I don't feel bad at senseless tragedy in fiction because no real people were affected. There is no meaning behind it, which as established earlier is a negative for me.

At best I can relate to the feeling of emotion from other surviving characters reacting to the death. And even that is blunted and would be so much more if there was more meaning to it.

Type 2: The Mid Tier Death Scene
Allow me to use a classic example from fiction. The Death of Superman. Superman dies sacrificing himself to stop the monster Doomsday from destroying humanity. It has been recreated many times.

I feel some emotion at this, because the death now has meaning. Superman's death has meaning by his sacrifice.

Do I feel a lot of emotion at this? Not a huge amount. Why? Because while it has meaning, it's not meaningful literally full of meaning.

What we learn about Superman from most versions of the Death of Superman is Superman is willing to die to save his home. This is noble but it's not especially unique to Superman.

The Heroic Sacrifice is a trope similar to the Shock Death. While it's a better trope in my opinion, it is still something that any heroic character can be slotted into and have the same effect. A lot of villains, any villain that cares about something more then their own life, could also sacrifice their life in a similar sense.

Type 3: The High Tier Death Scene
The greatest death scene, the ones I love are the ones where the death of a character is perfectly entwined with their individual character, the more it encapsulates them the better it is. This principle encapsulates the lower 2 tiers as well, as the low tier death scene has nothing unique to a character about it, and the mid tier death scene demonstrates only that the character is willing to die for a cause.

It can be difficult to explain this concept quickly or clearly as generally in-universe it requires large amounts of setting up and is obviously tailed to the character's self so is personalized.

This is sort of the classical archetype of the tragedy, where the hero's own fatal flaw damns them and kills them but can also be combined with a heroic sacrifice for a more heroic version. Take episode 45 of Sailor Moon Classic for instance.

Episode 45 involves the deaths of the 4 guardian senshi and is considered one of the best episodes of the series by the fandom. The three episodes most often chosen to be the best would be episodes 45, 125, and 198. Why is this? Do Moonies just like to see their heroes die? No, it's because episode 45 encapsulates what makes the Guardian Senshi as individual characters amazing through their deaths. I will only give Mercury's for the sake of time and because hers is the easiest to explain probably.

LONG SM Death sequence analysis here. Feel free to skip if you don't need my example to understand what I'm getting at:
Episode 45 is the penultimate episode of season 1. The witch Queen Beryl has begun her ritual to revive the Goddess of Darkness Metaria however the Guardian Senshi and Sailor Moon found the entrance to the Dark Kingdom where Beryl is and mount an assault. Beryl, needing more time sends out her 5 strongest youma, the DD Girls, youma as strong or stronger then the Senshi and with powerful illusion abilities to kill the Senshi or at least slow them down long enough.

The episode features the 4 Guardian Senshi dying brutally one after the other in defense of their princess killing the DD Girls. Sailor Mercury is the intellectual/nerd of the Senshi group. She was outcasted because people assumed bad things because of her high scores, and she felt that people only valued her for her intelligence. Despite this she was one of the kindest senshi and highly rational as well, and wanted to learn and help her friends develop their minds. She is also subtly implied to be attracted to her teammate Sailor Jupiter.

When Sailor Jupiter dies on the battlefield to protect the others after the senshi are ensnared by the DD girls illusion ability, Sailor Moon (who is the reincarnation of a princess and not a soldier like the others) is crying hysterically and losing her mind. Sailor Mercury tells Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus that they should move on to Beryl while she holds off the DD Girls saying rational that their attack powers are stronger then hers and that they will be needed therefore.

Moon gets even more hysterical not wanting Mercury to die but Mercury convinces her to go on. Mercury then faces certain death against 3 surviving Senshi Level Enemies. She only has her shabon spray, creating a cold distracting mist and her computer. The DD Girls attack her with balls of lava but Mercury uses her computer to analyze the threat and her water magic to cool it to stone. The DD Girls get more aggressive and Mercury thinks quick and encases herself in her own shabon spray allowing her to enter the lava unharmed.

The 3 DD Girls circle her menacing and begin sadistically torturing her about where the others are. Mercury lies to them, that the others ran away, prompting the 3 to get closer to her. Mercury, having previously analyzed to find that the illusion comes from a gem on the leader's forehead, smashes her mercury computer on the leader's forehead destroying their illusion making capacity causing the DD girls to kill her in rage.

What does this demonstrate? Mercury heroically sacrifices herself here, so that shows her nobility. But it's so much more then that. We see Mercury's dual rationality and compassion. We see her putting less value in herself and her abilities and at the same see how amazing that ability as she quick-wits herself out of death against a certain death against 3 enemies of the same power as her. And the biggest poetry of it, Mercury who wanted to help her friends learn and see more of the truth dies destroying illusions, freeing their minds. Mercury's death sequence is so emotionally heartwrenching because it's so incredibly her.
Finished my example

That is how to create a truly amazing death scene. Imbueing everything about it with what it distinctly and uniquely that character, making the death reflect the person it is from. THAT is meaning, that has symbolic resonance. That is why it is so emotionally powerful.
