Comic Starfire Battle Royale

A while ago I made a complete analysis for Starfire of DC Comics (Earth-1 version). Convergence unified Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis and Rebirth unified THAT with New 52 continuity. Pre-Crisis and New 52 were both two alternate timeline forms of the Post-Crisis 10 years later in-universe. For a while however the three versions of Starfire was separate (kinda). This is gonna be an analysis on how a battle royale of Pre-Crisis, Post-Crisis, and New 52 Starfire would go, seeing how their feats compare to each other.

I will be comparing these three versions feats in 10 categories.

A quick little origin for each of them

Pre-Crisis Starfire is the Warrior Princess of Tamaran. After being rescued from Gordanian slavers, by the Teen Titans, a superhero teenage team created by the sidekicks of the big name superheroes, she joins their cause. Her great power provides the young team a valuable amount of power, despite her lack of moral restrictions against killing and hot temper, part of her alien ways, sometimes get her into conflict with the others.

Post-Crisis Starfire is a veteran member of the Superhero group the Titans. Princess to an Alien World, she uses her alien powers and superheroing experience to mentor the younger generation of heroes, and aid her adopted world of Earth against various inter-planetary threats. As a Tamaranian, Starfire is highly emotional and impulsive, though this is tempered by her acclimation to Earth.

New 52 Starfire is a mysterious alien stationed on Earth. At first appearing extremely cold and uncaring towards the people of Earth, as well as air-headed, this is revealed to be a ruse and Starfire's true personality is a warrior commander, who eventually saves and forgives Blackfire, her sister who took the rightful alien throne from Starfire. Starfire seems naive and unaware of Earth ways though she eventually reveals a mysterious connection to the Superhero group known as the Titans.

Comparison Time:

Strength:

Pre-Crisis:

Starfire hurts Pre-Crisis Blackfire with her raw strength

as Blackfire was able to withstand a starbolt blast from Starfire, this suggests that her strength scales at least partially to her starbolt's power

Starfire was able to slay a giant on the level of the Mythological Titans, threatening Hyperion

This version of Hyperion was the Sun itself

Starfire was able to overpower Donna Troy

who previously contended with aforementioned Titans as well, including launching Hyperion with a kick

Post-Crisis:

Starfire knocks around Mad Titaness form of Donna Troy, Troia

who tanked a violent planetary destruction

and scales to above Fodder Green Lanterns from defeating Powerful Green Lantern Entity Jade

when weaker Lanterns can survive a Black Hole

It required both Donna Troy and Mon-El to hold back Starfire

Mon-El being able to move a white dwarf star

Starfire was confident in her ability to restrain Superboy and Wonder Girl, both of whom have numerous feats of fighting planetary to stellar level entities

Donna Troy and Wonder Girl were able to fight Superwoman (Evil Alternate Universe version of Wonder Woman) and Devastation (Created to be a Dark Counterpart to Wonder Woman) respectively

Starfire also managed to melee Post-Crisis Wonder Woman herself

Who has tanked multiple infinite mass punches one after another. Starfire also had to hold back her punch or threaten to kill a Darkstar, comparable to a Green Lantern

Even very early in Post-Crisis Starfire was able to hurt a Manhunter with a punch, also on the level of Green Lanterns

New 52:

Starfire is suggested to be one of the strongest aliens on Earth in the early New 52

Starfire suggests she is nearly as strong as New 52 Superman

who can tank supernova and survived a black hole

Comparison:

Post-Crisis Starfire is clearly the strongest of the three Starfires. She had to pull her punch to avoid killing black hole level entities. She was relative to Post-Crisis Wonder Woman, who could tank stellar+ strikes. By scaling she is probably nigh-star system level.

Pre-Crisis Starfire and New 52 Starfire are closer. Pre-Crisis Starfire was able to kill a Stellar entity (Titan Level Giant), while New 52 was relative to a Large Stellar Entity (New 52 Superman).

If I had to give it to one, I would probably give it to Pre-Crisis Starfire since the only really stellar level strength "feat" for New 52 is a statement by herself where she might not know the FULL capacity of New 52 Superman, and the fact that she only got that strong near the very end of New 52 while Pre-Crisis Starfire while her giant-slaying feat was only at the very tail end of Pre-Crisis as well was at least strong enough to contend with the titans mid-way through her pre-crisis phase, while earlier New 52 Starfire was a lot weaker.

Also Pre-Crisis Starfire was able to overpower Donna Troy, who is independently stellar, while angry. While New 52 was relative to a stellar+ being, suggesting she is stellar, this suggests that while the two would be relatively even at first, Pre-Crisis would get stronger when angry.

Durability:

Pre-Crisis:

Starfire survives her own starbolt energy reflected back at her

Starfire survives the starbolt of Blackfire, who had more energy then even Starfire

Starfire withstood the strike of Donna Troy

Starfire survived the attacks of not only Titan Hyperion

but of even stronger Titans like Cronos

as well as shielding Donna Troy with her own body from a blast from Thia who at the time was much stronger then Hyperion

as well as taking an attack from her on a separate occasion

Thia at this time was powerful enough to overpower Zeus himself, proving herself much stronger then Hyperion

Post-Crisis:

Starfire is durable enough to tank her own starbolt thrown back at her

A surprise attack from a Manhunter barely wounds Starfire

Starfire was able to survive a blast from Enhanced Blackfire

Bear in mind that earlier Enhanced Blackfire was mistaken for X'Hal herself

X'Hal being a star system scale threat whose mere birth caused a supernova

She was also able to survive a blast from a form of Blackfire

that was stated to be even STRONGER then this form

Starfire can also take attacks from Troia, Mad Titaness Form of Donna Troy

Starfire was able to take the attack of Silver Swan

which just 1 issue later was able to knock back Wonder Woman

Starfire was able to survive an attack from New God Orion

who was stronger then New God Lightray who weakened was able to create a giant star

Starfire was able to survive a blow from Demon Sabbac (Demonic Equivalent of Shazam)

Sabbac should be somewhat relative to Shazam who could punch with enough force to casually create a black hole

Starfire survived a strike from Envy with Wonder Woman's powers

Envy does, in fact, copy powers at their height

Starfire was also able to survive near a galaxy-wide black hole that was destroying galaxies and moving the universe off-center as well as threatening the universe

as well as the massive energy surge of the black hole closing

New 52:

Mostly it's just the same as the strength section.

Starfire is suggested to be one of the strongest aliens on Earth in the early New 52

Starfire suggests she is nearly as strong as New 52 Superman

who can tank supernova and survived a black hole

In addition Starfire should probably scale to New 52 Cyborg Superman who has flown through exploding supernovas

Also Starfire has made an analogy to flying through a black hole, though it might just be a figure of speech

Comparison:

Post-Crisis Starfire is again clearly the greater here, having numerous feats suggesting at least partial scaling to the top tier fighters of the DC Earth, suggesting durability near to solar system level or higher, consistent with her general other feats of basically tanking a stellar+ to solar system level being like a manhunter, as well as tanking well in stride a blast from Orion which should be above a casual large stellar feat from Lightray. While the others are only arguably in the large stellar range Post-Crisis Starfire is well above large stellar.

The other two are again pretty comparable. Pre-Crisis Starfire is in the stellar+ range being able to to take attacks from Titans a lot stronger then Hyperion the Sun, as well as Blackfire whose much more powerful then Starfire's own stellar level. New 52 Starfire is based on partial scaling to large stellar level feats and well as a possible stellar+ to large stellar feat herself of possibly entering a black hole.

Between the two, I again gotta give a slight edge to Pre-Crisis Starfire, just due to New 52 lacking feats relatively and because it's too speculative to say how well stellar she is. It's possible that she could survive but only barely a starbusting attack. In comparison Pre-Crisis, while not the tank Post-Crisis was, was able to take Stellar+ attacks and keep going, even a few in a row.

Starbolts/Energy Projection

Pre-Crisis:

Starfire's starbolt was capable of harming Blackfire

And was partially effective against both Pre-Crisis Wonder Woman

and was seemingly able to harm the Titan King Cronos

Post-Crisis:

Starfire's blast was able to harm Envy, with Wonder Woman's powers

Her starbolt was able to harm the Vega System Green Lantern

as well as Brainiac 8, which was sent back in time to kill Donna Troy

and could one-shot Black Lantern Terra

as well as the New God Devilance

Starfire was also stated to be the only Titan able to put down Demon Raven and actually managed to ward her off

Starfire can also amplify her energy projection with the nova blast. This attack one-shot Enhanced Blackfire (who was mistaken for X'hal)

New 52:

Starfire's starbolt tears through a Chida beast that her raw strength could do nothing too, despite being weakened

After Lord Helspont kills Blackfire, Starfire in a rage uses her starbolt and actually harms him

Lord Helspont was ridiculously strong, able to one-shot New 52 Superman

Starfire can bolster her starbolt power with a nova

Comparison:

Post-Crisis and New 52 are both really impressive here, Post-Crisis simply by scaling to the same things as strength and durability while New 52 being because the starbolt was made much stronger then Starfire's base strength and durability. New 52 Starfire's starbolt was able to harm a Large Stellar+ entity like Lord Helspont (can one-shot supernova level entities). Post-Crisis's starbolt was strong enough to harm Envy with WW's powers which is a similar entity as WW was able to tank infinite mass punches. Both can bolster their energy projection with novas.

Post-Crisis is probably still stronger due to her starbolt feat is a good deal more casual, and her nova is treated as being a lot more stronger then her regular starbolts, while New 52's nova's power is really unknown in relation to her regular starbolt. Post-Crisis could arguably be even higher as well.

Pre-Crisis, outside of suggesting she's much higher then the stellar range based on scaling to Pre-Crisis Wonder Woman really only gets to stellar or so. She was only barely to harm Cronos whose a stellar+ entity. The Pre-Crisis era really treated the starbolt as only about as strong as Starfire's strength, in contrast with the New 52 where the starbolt was treated as much stronger then Starfire's actual strength.

Speed:

Pre-Crisis:

Starfire was able to move fast enough to protect Donna Troy from the inter-dimensional strike from the Titaness Thia

This shows that she is faster then Donna Troy and also was able to move comparable to attacks that quickly traveled an inter-dimensional scale, likely requiring speeds of quadrillions of times the speed of light.

The same Titans, which Starfire was not blitzed in combat with, were able to traverse the universal sea at a rapid pace requiring vast speeds likely a great deal massively faster then light

Starfire was also able to catch up to the Invisible Plane of Wonder Woman

The Invisible Plane was fast enough to move into another dimension in seconds, requiring speeds quadrillions of times the speed of light

Post-Crisis:

Starfire can fly half a parsec in a relatively short amount of time requiring speeds thousands of times lightspeed

She is able to easily fly lightyears, requiring speeds likely millions of times the speed of light at least

Starfire was also able to catch up to Supergirl despite Supergirl having a headstart

Supergirl and Superboy were able to fly to the source wall at the edge of the universe rapidly, requiring speeds likely trillions to quadrillions of times the speed of light

Starfire was also confident of her abilities to contain that same Superboy

Who was able to fight an Imperiex Probe capable of quickly crossing the entire universe

Starfire was also able to tag Jesse Quick, a speedforce user, showing even higher reaction/attack speed

New 52:

Starfire claims to be near the level of speed of Superman

New 52 Superman crossed the universe to Earth in 60 days, requiring speeds billions of times lightspeed

Which is potentially consistent with Starfire not being blitzed by Lord Helspont. She also maybe scales to the speed of the Lantern Corps which have to cross inter-galactic distance regularly to patrol them.

That's about it.

Comparison:

No surprise, but New 52 Starfire is easily the slowest of the three. She has almost no superluminal speed feats, and if you exclude scaling, she arguably has none.

Between Post-Crisis and Pre-Crisis the two are actually fairly equal, though Post-Crisis has better reaction/attack speed.

Range:

Pre-Crisis:

Pre-Crisis Starfire's best range feat is creating a fire that lit up the desert, spreading at least hundreds of meters, likely several kilometers, simulating the fireball of a nuke

Post-Crisis:

Starfire was able to shoot a starbolt that ripped into a mountain likely kilometers away

And this isn't even her best feat. She has been able to hit a missile at a vast distance in space

Post-Crisis Starfire's best range feat is shooting a starbolt from the orbit of the Moon that seemed to go near it's surface, requiring range of likely hundreds of kilometers

New 52:

Starfire's Nova was able to extend at least hundreds of meters, likely a few kilometers

Comparison:

Post-Crisis is once again the superior, having range hundreds to thousands of times her counterparts. The other two are fairly equal, though the wording makes me suspect New 52's range is slightly higher as the nova extended that far almost instantly while Pre-Crisis's had to spread that far

Stamina:

Pre-Crisis:

Starfire was taught by the legendary Warlords of Okaara, bringing herself to a superhuman mastery of the arts of war

Starfire, particularly in her Pre-Crisis incarnation had a love of violence and warfare

On several missions, she had to engage in combat or dangerous physical activity for several hours.

Post-Crisis:

Starfire's energy is so potent that an energy damper was unable to nullify or contain her energy

Also during 52 she was engaged in fights and physical activity semi-regularly for an entire year

New 52

Starfire is described as having the energy of the sun raging within her 24/7

as well as a "walking solar flare"

A few hours of solar charge was able to allow Starfire to survive for days underground, where she was able to intake no energy from outside sources

Comparison:

Post-Crisis and New 52 both have clearly more stamina then Pre-Crisis, being both clearly superhuman while Pre-Crisis simply lacked the feats for it.

Between Post-Crisis and New 52 is kind of hard to say, but I think Post-Crisis' feat of being able to overload an energy dampener is more impressive then the more mundane feat of being able to survive a few days without external power source, but that's subjective.

Skill:

Pre-Crisis:

As mentioned above, Starfire was trained by the legendary warlords of Okaara

Four times in a row, Starfire defeated Donna Troy in a battle of skill

Outside of Starfire, only Wonder Woman can beat Donna Troy in skill

Starfire even rivals the skill of Wonder Woman herself, who regularly fights Ares, the embodiment of war itself

Post-Crisis:

Starfire was able to match the Mad Titaness Troia in skill

She was also able to melee Wonder Woman, who can regularly fight Ares, the embodiment of War itself

New 52:

Starfire is trained in the art of war

and is a precision blaster

Comparison:

New 52 Starfire is clearly the least skilled by a wide margin, not even really having a superhuman skill feat. Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis are pretty even, though I would give a slight edge to Post-Crisis for actually going hand to hand with Wonder Woman, while Pre-Crisis was only stated to "rival" her.

Intelligence:

Pre-Crisis:

Starfire is for the most part fairly average in intellect, focused more on training in combat. However she has occasional moments of cleverness, such as using her ability to absorb languages by kissing to quickly determine that Superman was not a robot and save everyone assembled

Post-Crisis:

Starfire is a relatively clever fighter, due to her experience of 10 years fighting as an Earth Superhero. Via clever thinking she was able to deduce an enemy trap and save the entire Milky Way Galaxy

Starfire was also able to beat an energy-absorber, normally her weakness

New 52:

Jokes about how Starfire is written aside, Starfire being relatively airheaded to the point she could not even remember the names or faces of former friends was actually a retcon-ed point, as she suggested that she was only pretending for her own purposes of infiltration.

Starfire is trained in the art of war, and can recognize traps well

Starfire is considered a tactical genius, and uses intelligent plans to accomplish her goals, like maneuvering her team too close to the enemy ship so they can't fire without hurting themselves

Comparison:

Basically the reverse case of the prior category. New 52 Starfire is both highly skilled and intelligent for a human. While she was vastly less skilled then her vastly superhuman skilled other versions, she is more intelligent as for the most part they are both average in intellect.

Between Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis, I would suggest Post-Crisis is smarter by a small margin, as she tends to use clever tactics slightly more often.

Unique Powers:

This is not including common powers, including enhanced sights, energy/fire projection, the ability to survive in space, the ability to absorb languages through kissing, flight, and enhanced beauty. Despite the name, I will be including powers that two of the three possess, just not including it in the section of the one that doesn't have it.

Pre-Crisis:

Can control the intensity of her starbolt (the others likely can do this, but it is never specified)

Creates a pseudo-shield starbolt construct

Can create a blinding light

Resistance to Human Pressure Point Combat

Resistance to Freezing

and Resistance to Knockout Gas

Post-Crisis:

Can concentrate her starbolt to a pencil thin point

Can shoot 5 Starbolts from one hand

Knows a nerve strike to knock people unconscious

Can hear while unconscious

Enhanced Sight

Energy-Draining

Resistance to Energy-Draining and Power Nullification

Resistance to Sedatives

Resistance to Large amounts of pain

Resistance to Emotional Manipulation (resisted the apathy field around Dis)

Resistance to Fear Manipulation

and Potential Resistance to Time Manipulation and Reality-Warping

New 52:

Can create a starbolt construct (ball) that fires starbolts

Elemental Projection (Light)

Healing (Low)

Enhanced Love, to the point that her kiss kills a Blight Lord:

Can see through cloaking devices

Enhanced sense of feel, can feel alcohol stimulating her on a cellular level

Resistance to Mind-Reading

Resistance to Power Nullification of Crux's Technology

and resistance to Freezing

Comparison:

This is arguably the most subjective category but it seems pretty evident to me that Post-Crisis Starfire has the best abilities here. At range, Post-Crisis and New 52 might be relatively equal, but if Starfire simply concentrates her starbolt, a way more useful version of Pre-Crisis' ability to adjust starbolt intensity, she could simply blast through the center of New 52's starbolt, or even intensely just shoot 5-10 starbolts at once at her, a rate of fire the other two can't even remotely keep up with.

At melee, Post-Crisis have nerve-strikes which would be a one-shot, even if she couldn't via raw strength. You could maybe argue Pre-Crisis could resist it due to resistance to pressure points, but that seemed to be based on human pressure points but against a fellow Tamaranian I doubt it would be effective. Besides that Post-Crisis has the only relevant resistance, being pain resistant giving her an extra layer of endurance compared to the others, as well as energy-draining to deprive the others. New 52 would probably do a little bit better against that as she has higher stamina but it would still probably be a disadvantage.

Comparing the other two you might think that New 52's weakness to being overloaded by very bright lights might be a weakness here since Pre-Crisis can create a bright flash of light, that said Pre-Crisis absolutely does not have the feats to create a light bright enough to overwhelm New 52.

Of there relevant abilities, both can create a bright blinding flash of light, though New 52 can maintain it longer. New 52 also has low level healing ability and can create a starbolt ball to obfuscate which direction her starbolt is going to go. On the other hand Pre-Crisis can control the intensity of her starbolt, it's unknown if that would grant any real advantage and can create a pseudo-shield which might help against the really powerful starbolt that New 52 has.

Weaknesses:

Pre-Crisis:

Starfire is ruled by her emotions, even moreso then the other versions of Starfire

Starfire also takes pity on her enemies

Post-Crisis:

Post-Crisis Starfire possesses similar weaknesses of being emotional and impulsive as well as showing mercy on enemies. She also possesses the weakness of always holding back

New 52:

New 52 Starfire also possesses the weakness of being emotional, impulsive, and prone to showing mercy on enemies. The New 52 Starfire is also more naive and idealistic, not very-pragmatic, in her solo series. She also was stated to be bound by her code of honor to introduce herself, which is only ever referenced once

Comparison:

This is also really subjective. Pre-Crisis has less weaknesses then the other two, though she is more emotional and impulsive then even they are. Though notably the Post-Crisis Starfire's weakness is the one thing making this even kinda arguable. Which brings us to

Overview/TLDR:

Pre-Crisis:

Verdict:

Post-Crisis Starfire would clearly defeat the other two Starfires. I'll be honest, even if this was a 2 on 1 battle; Pre-Crisis Starfire and New 52 Starfire vs Post-Crisis Starfire, I don't think that they would be able to beat Post-Crisis Starfire.

Post-Crisis Starfire has physical stats that would rip the others apart, starbolt power on par with New 52, speed and skill on par with Pre-Crisis, can spam multiple starbolts at once, can one-shot likely either of them even without using her strength up close...New 52 Starfire might be smarter then her going by feats, but even then it's not like she has such a massive advantage she would clearly know what to do against someone who so vastly outclasses her. The ONLY reason this could go to either of the others is due to Post-Crisis holding back, something New 52 is never said to do and Pre-Crisis is outright said to be the opposite, considered dangerous by her teammates due to her tendency to not hold back and kill criminals.

This is justified by three things

A: Outside this metafictional game I'm playing, Post-Crisis Starfire is supposed to be the same as the other two versions but with 10 years of experience, so naturally she's going to be better and the feats simply corroborate that

B: She has a LOT more content. The Post-Crisis phase for Starfire lasted 3 times as long as either of the others or 1.5 times as long as the two of them put together. You'll probably notice she had a lot more feats in general.

C: A lot of people actually got stronger in the Post-Crisis era. The Post-Crisis era was probably the most dangerous time in the DCU, due to the constant shifts in hypertime and numerous crises that occurred on Earth, forcing a lot of people to get stronger to adapt to the rising threat level.

Who would win between the other two though?

Well if Pre-Crisis Starfire fought New 52 Starfire my guess is that Pre-Crisis would probably just overpower her New 52 counterpart due to especially her raw speed advantage, but also her strength, durability and hand to hand skill. All she would need to do depending on starting distance is dodge a starbolt or two, though if they do hit it could possibly one-shot.

It's possible however, especially if you give prep time and prior knowledge, that New 52 Starfire might be able to trick her more emotional Pre-Crisis counterpart, and either hit her with a one-shot, or somehow incapacitate her partly and just outlast her via stamina and healing (maybe somehow tricking her into a water planet) though it would be dangerous.

While Pre-Crisis is more likely to win in a 1 on 1 with New 52 Starfire, I actually think New 52 Starfire has a slightly higher chance on winning the threeway fight then Pre-Crisis, though obviously both have a relatively low change compared to Post-Crisis.

Basically I could see New 52 tactically maneuvering so that Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis fight. Given their comparable level of skill and speed this might wear them both down a little even though one good clean hit from Post-Crisis would KO Pre-Crisis. If New 52 played her cards right I could see her maybe taking advantage of that to hit them both with a quick succession nova or two and then blasting anyone still moving. Though Post-Crisis would still probably take it then.

Anyway that is my analysis on who would win between Pre-Crisis, Post-Crisis and New 52 Starfire.

  1. Now THIS is quite the treat! I've become quite fond of Starfire lately and that other blog you did on her was a major contributing factor. Let's see, I'm gonna bet on...Starfire. Jokes aside, I had a good feeling about Post Crisis Starfire and it seems like my intuition didn't steer me wrong.

Something that really struck me about this blog was how closely it lined up with my thought process. A lot of the time when I read one of your comparisons between the three when it came to a specific element, you pretty much took the words out of my mouth! Which is a rewarding feeling for a reader.

Your reasoning at the end made a lot of sense. Being the veteran of the three and getting SO many more opportunities feats seemed to stack things heavily in Post Crisis Starfire's favor, which made the comparison between the runner-ups all the more interesting. I agree with you that Pre-Crisis would beat New 52 more often than not, though New 52 Star still stands a chance and could outwit her way into the occasional victory. Agreeing with you again, New 52's intellect advantage gives her a leg up in the three-way battle royale but Post Crisis is just too dangerous to not be the clear victor nine times out of ten (or more).

Really fun blog, you did a great job at covering the unique aspects of these three incarnations of this awesome character. Speaking of unique aspects, the section you had on their unique abilities was my favorite part along with your closing analysis. It also reminds me of how interesting she is when all three versions of her are united into one, making the super cool and surprisingly versatile character you covered in your previous blog. All the alluring pictures of this alien beauty certainly didn't hurt either ;)
Thanks for making this blog, I really enjoyed this one! Okay, I say that about pretty much everything but seriously, this one stands out!
