Tier List of the Sailor Moon Classic Cardians

Second Tier List of SM Monsters of the Week. This time it's the Cardians. You may notice that despite being the Maikaiju arc being 13 episodes long it has 12 cardians whereas the 46 episode first season had 34 youma or youma sets. You might also notice that these Cardians seem a lot weaker then the youma to the extent that Mid Tier Cardians would be Low Tier Youma and High Tier Cardians would be Mid Tier Youma. That's because the Maikaiju arc sucked had a different focus then the first season. I should note that all the Cardians are not as intelligent as the Youma, since the Youma were sentient beings that could speak and make plans and the Cardians were basically animals that only said their names like Pokemon.

And no I'm not including the mystery cardian, we no absolutely nothing about the mystery cardian.

Anyway...

Low Tiers:

12: Minotauron

  • Superhuman Durability
  • Can extent horns and drain energy of those trapped in them
Yeah Rei and Makoto were beating up Minotauron in their civilian states. Before regaining their memories. Minotauron has one form of attack without much AoE, marginal range and without any extra strength.

11: Hell Ant

  • Superhuman Durability
  • Extending hair tendrils which can entangle and drain energy
You'd think she would be some ant-themed monstrosity with Hellfire powers but no. Usagi's father throwing essentially laser tag equipment on Hell Ant stunned her. The only reason she's above Minotauron is because her hair has better range and aoe slightly.

10: Bipierrot

  • Rides around on a unicycle
  • Throws clown-based items as an attack
  • Energy-Draining Rope
This Clown might scare small children but really isn't much of a threat. While her unicycle gives her some rather strange mobility, she isn't exactly much of a powerhouse.

Mid Tiers:

9: Amanju

  • Superhuman Strength and Durability
  • Superleaping
Amanju is like a more mobile and less intelligent Iguara. The fact that she's this high says something.

8: Utonberino

  • Levitation
  • Can crush enemies with giant chopsticks
  • Can shoot waves of entangling seawood
Utonberino has some range and anti-melee capability but her actual offensive and defensive potencies are heavily lacking.

7: Vampir

  • Levitation
  • Fangs
  • Plant Hand can release energy-draining tentacles
Vampir is functionally very similar to Utonberino. She gives up entangling for energy-draining which is generally more helpful

6: Yamandakka

  • Flight
  • Can release energy-draining flower petals
  • Can attack with drained energy
Yamandakka's main two abilities keeping her mostly out of harm's way and draining opponent's energy are what really get her up here. The third ability but it takes so long to set up and would only really be used against unconscious enemies anyway, so it's really just a bonus

5: Amaderasu

  • Levitation
  • Fire Blasts
  • Solar Energy Rays
  • Can trap people in energy bubbles
  • Ranged Energy-Draining
Amaderasu has several differents forms of ranged attack and can stay out of melee with her levitation. Her only weakness is her lack of physical stats

4: Seiren

  • Flight
  • Water Blast from Mouth
  • Tail can release a golden mist that puts people to sleep
  • Entangling Hair
Seiren is pretty similar to Amaderasu. She has less versatile ranged attacks but her golden mist gives her a lot more aoe and she has more mobility as well so I put her ahead.

High Tiers:

3: Gigaros

  • Superhuman Strength and Durability
  • Flight
  • Energy-Draining Touch
  • Extending Fingernails
  • Green Cyclones
Gigaros is primarily a melee beatstick but her flight gives her good mobility and her cyclones act as effective anti-range. Her energy-draining touch also makes her better at melee.

2: Falion

  • Superhuman Durability
  • Lion Fangs and Claws
  • Can halt projectiles by looking at them
  • Teleportation
  • Energy-Draining
  • Dark Energy Breath
Falion has a tricky powerset to engage with. It's teleportation gives it very good mobility. It has strong melee and mid-range power with it's dark energy breath and long-range can't work against it due to it's stare ability.

1: Reci

  • Levitation
  • Can shoot exploding flower petals
  • Much faster then the Senshi or other Cardians
  • Can drain opponent's energy by looking into their eyes
  • Intangibility
Reci's first 4 abilities alone would only put her so far as Amaderasu or maybe right below her. But her intangibility would be completely op compared to most of the cardians since since of them can't do anything at all to her and at best they can energy-drain her which isn't gonna be helpful since she is faster has comparable to better energy-draining and has her own moderate ranged attack. None of them have that fast energy-drain or mind manipulation or anything of the story to beat her.

  1. Oh, I found this at the perfect time! I just so happen to be on a Sailor Moon kick right now, so I had a lot of fun reading through both this and the youma ranking article. I do have a few questions, though:

    1) The low tiers are obviously weaker than any youma, but where would each of the other cardians place on the youma rankings (place-by-place, that is)?

    2) Do you think you could add episode numbers for each of the cardians and youma? There's a lot of these guys, so it's not always easy to remember who showed up when.

    3) Can we expect a ranking of the droids any time soon? As I said, I really enjoyed this post, so I'd appreciate seeing the season of Sailor Moon I remember watching the most get its day in the limelight.

Well, that's all for now. Keep up the good work!
