The MKR Anime canonicity

Clamp continuity is....a little confusing. I have made errors when discussing it before. As my next death prediction is Umi vs Weiss, for Umi's side I most discuss the applicability of the MKR Anime (though it doesn't massively upgrade the character).

Generally speaking CLAMP is sort of like DC Comics and Saint Seiya is that it has a multiverse with many versions of the same character, some very different. Thus how much a character's feats scale to a different version of the character depends either on if they've had any interaction, or what the divergence is in their timeline. Generally cosmological constants would be the most constant determined at the start of creation.

So is the MKR anime a canon timeline?

In the Magic Knight Rayearth Collections, the Clamp manga writers drew the following picture of the MKR villain Debonair:

There is no implication in the Japanese that Debonair is non-canon.

Why is this? Because Clamp CREATED her. In Chapter 4 (first chapter of volume 2), page 214 CLAMP confirms they made the last part of season 1 and ALL of season 2 of the anime, which is the majority of the series, confirming their approval of it to be in he multiverse.

A manga version of Nova appears on that page as well, who is also an "anime only" character, denoting she, and by extension Debonair and the MKR anime exist in the multiverse.

In the next chapter page 208, the CLAMP writers even call the 3-part OVA Rayearth an "alternate world" suggesting it is also a parallel timeline, and as anyone who has seen both the anime and the OVA knows, the OVA is far more different to the manga then the OVA. While I wouldn't scale to the OVA feats since the timeline apparently diverged at some far earlier point to cause such changes, it is highly suggestive that the alternate versions of MKR exist in the CLAMP multiverse.

It should also be noted that when the Magic Knights broke the fourth wall, they noted that they watched their anime versions. Their breaking the fourth wall is a canonical ability as Hikaru speaks directly to the reader on the last page of the story.

Why is this important?

Miyuki-chan in Wonderland made by CLAMP implies that tv shows are their own worlds as Miyuki-chan is sucked into a TV show in chapter 3. Chapter 7 of the same series has Miyuki-chan traveling to the world of X/1999, another CLAMP manga series.

Both series have a large amount of references and shout outs in Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicles, the Big Crossover of all Clamp works. Miyuki-chan herself appears in the background of every world and several other characters from Miyuki-chan in Wonderland appears like the Snow Twins in Shara Country.

It also includes lots of X/1999 characters, including Asagi Shougo who was not in the manga but only in the film.

In the anime version of Tsubasa Resevoir chronicles one of Sakura's trans-dimensional feathers floats into the world of Kishim, rules by Kishim, an alternate version of Debonair, a villain from the Anime of the Magic Knight Rayearth.

Why is this relevant? First of all, Kishim Country is the reverse world of and bonded to Koryo country which is definitely a canonical world.

More notably, Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicles Anime's Sakura is likely an alternate form of Anime Sakura, Anime Clone Sakura as opposed to Manga Clone Sakura.

However the CCS anime is actually canonical. Clear Card Arc shows that Sakura had more then 19 Cards:

Cardcaptor Sakura - Clear Card Arc chapter 1 : Clear Card page 4 - Mangakakalot.com

 it can be counted!

However in the manga, Sakura only gathered 19 Clow Cards, while in the anime she gathered many more (depending on your count somewhere between 53-55). As there are confirmed more then 19 cards, this demonstrates the canonical nature of the Sakura anime.

All together, this demonstrates that the MKR Anime is an alternate world whose feats can likely be applied to the manga MKR characters.
