How they compare: Alma Wade (F.E.A.R.)

It is the nature of men to make monsters, and the nature of monsters to destroy their creators. In the near future of 2025 tests for psychics have become more common and the US government sponsored many companies to try and find the most potent psychics so as to get the invaluable military advantage of psychic commanders, some of these companies being...less then ethical. Alma Wade was born with an inordinate amount of latent psychic power, constantly disturbed by feeling the negative emotions of everyone around her, her father reluctantly put her in Project Paragon so that she might be able to control her powers. Unfortunately Armacham Technology Corporation, the company running Project Paragon was one of the less ethical ones.

Despite being a young child at the time, Alma passed every test with ease. To find the source of her powers Armacham began conducting scientific experiments on the girl. The 5 year old girl started to pursposefully fail tests in order to avoid further experimention and began to lash out violently at those cruely experiementing on her with her powers. Realizing that the only reason they were still alive was her young age, they induced Alma into a coma, planning on forcibly impregnating her when she became fertile so her children could be bred as psychic commanders. The first this happened was when she reached the age of 14. At the birth of her first child at age of 15, despite her heavily sedated state, she could sense her child being taken from her, and the beginning of her true hatred began.

Twice Alma was raped and gave birth, stirring in her sleep and her hatred. When her second came to the age of 10, she took psychic control of him and went on a murderous rampage. When the connection was found between the two, fearing for their lies ATC shut down life support for Alma. However some part of her, which they could only describe as her "psychic residue", her very soul lingered in vengance to those that took her babies away, who made her life such Hell. Having known only cruelty in life, so too her spirit became one of cruelty.

In terms of raw power, Alma's power seems to vary somewhat. She is called a threat to the world, though her power depends on where she is and seemingly her emotional state. In general her psychic power in the Alma-verse is much higher then her power in the physical world. That said even in the physical world, when she was close to giving birth for a third time in FEAR 3, her birth contractions were able to knock over skyscrapers and at the end of FEAR 1 an angry Alma was able to cause massive damage to a city including telekinetically ripping apart city blocks. It's likely more as her power was causing large earthquakes in FEAR 3.

Her durability is a lot easier to measure. Alma reanimated her old body imbued it with enough durability to survive a point blank nuke strike. It's possible this level of durability scales to her attack potency since it's the same psychic but there's no definitive evidence for it.

In terms of speed, Alma easily scales to her two sons who were bullettimers with time manipulation. In FEAR 1 she also quickly moved from a distant building to a helicopter before anyone there could react, which would suggest hypersonic speed, although it may be teleportation.

Alma's raw power may be far larger as her subconcious created the Almaverse for her psychic body to reside in while she slept, a whole mental plane world. Her birth contractions in FEAR 3 were distorting reality and merging her mental plane world with the physical world. This is a feat that could potentially be  planet level, if not outright universal.

Alma has a large amount of powers, fitting for someone who passed every psychic test. Her basic nature is a noncorporeal invisible soul made of psychic residue, though if she needs a physical body she can reanimate and possess her old body. She can also possess people as she did to her second son Paxton.) Her noncorporeal form can teleport, telekinetically move things up to and including large buildings, telepathically read the emotions of all people nearby, and telepathically induce hallucinations and delusions to the point of warping the minds of a whole city of people to being her insane cultists. She can use this to telepathically communicate, such as telling her sons how to free her. Alma's true form can rip the flesh off people, drive them insane or kill them outright passively. She can create a mist that induces death to those that wander into it.

Alma's biggest power is the Almaverse. As Alma lay sleeping for years, she created a psychic world that she has complete control over to reside in, a world that she can reality warp at will, and by FEAR 3 was merging with the real world. She has more mild reality-warping in the real world but in the Alma-verse, reality is as she wants it. Alma's subconcious controls the world and through it she can create horrific monsters like Creep an expression of Alma's memory of the man who tormented her. She can also resurrect people as zombies or turn them into ones outright, beings capable of tanking a missile. She can also summon other ghosts to fight people.

In terms of weaknesses, Alma only really possesses 2. The first of which being that she is not fully in control of her own power. She's really a tormented little girl whose power flares up defensively in dramatic ways and doesn't have much skill or focus with her powers, with some of her powers being subconcious manifestations of her wants. The second is that she is weak to either of her sons, possibly because she conciously or not refuses to use her full force against them.

So how would she do in other verses?

In DC Comics, Alma would be a psychic nearly without equal and would be a massive threat if she can tap into the Dreaming, although this may actually limit the damage she can do as in the DC Universe, the dreaming is not a wild chaos to be tamed into worlds but instead follows the very strict rules of Dream of the Endless.

Regardless even a lot of DC Heroes might find it very difficult to fight her as the ones that can effect her are the ones that are more likely to have advanced senses to detect her true form and be driven passively insane or die. There are heroes that could stop her, most notably Superman can see astral forms and freeze them and Martian Manhunter can sense her psychic mind-storm and calm it the way he did to the Joker, but she'd hit way outside her "range" just due to her passive haxes and the ability to reality-warp even more then normal via mass mind hax.

In Marvel Comics, Alma would only have raw power normally about on par with a Low Meta considering that kiloton to megaton level feats are fairly normal for Metas in Marvel but her raw haxes would make her a dangerous threat. Astral Plane Entities are not as common in Marvel and she could definitely hit into the High Metas Range even if more people here can resist her psychic abilities.

However the absolute ideal counter to Alma on Earth 616 would definitely be Professor X. Not only can he merge his own mental dimension with Alma's to talk to her mind directly, something Marvel Psychics due ot train, but he has decades of experience talking to Mutants that are hated for who they are and calming them. Professor X would likely restrain Alma's psychic power and remind her of her love for children until she calms down. Honestly this probably ends weirdly wholesome-ly.

In the Silent Hill-verse Alma would be an immediate god tier, vastly beyond the power of almost anyone in the tier, although would not be stronger then Samael who creates and warps whole realities far more casually then Alma with far greater degree of hax. Alma would very likely have power equal to God's who created the orbit of the Moon and the Earth around the Sun, requiring similar cosmic power.

God could potentially stop Alma as she has the same level of power and hax, although would be reluctatant too as continous use of her powers will force her to reincarnate. This could actually provide Alma a chance to beat her if she hesistates by pulling her into the Alma-verse where her rule is supreme. Even then God might have a chance to win but Alma's greater degree of control there would probably allow Alma to kill God and begin to reign over the Silent Hill-verse.

The only other thing in the verse that could stop Alma if Alma beats God beyond Samael intervening, is that she is trapped by Silent Hill itself, a supernatural town which changes itself to match the psyche of the one within, forcing them to confront their inner demons. If Alma is forced to resee the trauma that was inflicted on her, it may break her or make her psychic power grow stronger in defense or both.

In the Evil Dead/Nightmare on Elm Street/Friday the 13th Universe, Alma would actually fit very naturally. Physically her power would be comparable to Revenant Jason's physical capabilities or Freddy's physical strength/durability. Alma's full power would also be comparable to Freddy's reality-warping power or Jason X's physical power.  Alma would be actually fairly similar to the Dream Master, albeit far more malevolent.

As such, Alma might hypothetically be able to beat Freddy if he went inside the Alma-verse similar to how he was threatened in the comics by going into the Dream Master's dimension, although in most scenarios he would clearly win due to much greater speed, far greater speed/hax and the clear fact Freddy would absolutely exploit her love for her sons.

Overall Alma would be a high tier in the verse, able to fight evenly with the verse's strongest fighters in some scenarios, and with a pretty strong arsenal but also not unbeatable.

In the Ring/Grudge/Bunshinsaba Universe, Alma's placement would also be rather fitting. Alma would have speed equal to the fastest beings in the verse and power pretty much uncontested. That said she would more then likely lose against someone like Sadako or Kayako simply because she doesn't have control over her powers and lacks the versatility they do. This is pretty fitting for her character archeype as a god tier psychic whose just lashing out vs a skilled Onryo.

In particular Alma has never shown resistance to the advanced sealing techniques in the verse, and while her psychic abilities might let her fight a psychic attack she hasn't shown any defense against astral or spiritual attacks. While Alma can summon more ghosts to fight, she's never shown the ability to duplicate whole armies of herself and so her army would be rather substandard.

Alma could attempt to attack from another dimension by just merging the world with the Almaverse causing distortions to reality from a different universe. However any Onryo can travel to the Demonic Abyss, another dimension at will and even if you say this doesn't work because it's a mental dimension, Sadako has shown both inter-dimensional avatar projection, and in fact interacts from her own dimension like Alma does but completely consciousness, but she can also enter people's dreams directly which is where the Almaverse is located.

Alma overall as an Onryo is ridiculously high in terms of raw power for the verse, but could be stopped by one of the top tiers just via far better control of their abilities and stronger haxes.

  1. Well this was a treat, you know I'm ALWAYS in the mood for a good Horror Blog! and one not only on an Onryo, but one ive Never heard of before at that? Respect.

This gal reminded me a little of Mimi from Flip Flappers, mixed with Samora Morgan from the American ring movies. Shes a super emo and dark Onryo with MASSIVELY impressive physical power, the only Onryo that i know that is Stronger than her is Hisako.

It was really interesting seeing her take on these verses, Silent Hill was a very fitting verse which i always wanted to learn more about so that was rather interesting as i didnt know it got that high. And yet again she highlighted some key differences between Marvel and DC with how she wouldnt be THAT Huge a deal in Marvel, but would almost certainly need higher tier heros to get involved if she was in DC.

I also LOVE that you used the Freddy/Jason/Ash series and Ring! those were obviously both extremely fitting, especially the latter, in both tone and actual verses tiers. Its interesting in both she would be a top tier powerhouse, but would still almost certainly lose to the main line characters due to the massive hax wall. I really hope my blogs were of some help when writing those :)

Overa1l, really great blog, thank you for introducing me to uet another Horror series

  2. Well that's a messed up backstory. Good blog Imp. I've never heard of the FEAR series before. Some elements of it remind me of the show Stranger Things though on a much darker and much more powerful a scale. The Marvel/DC comparison was a treat as usual, and shows that even DC is shown to not always be so tough when it comes to the certain circumstances like mind hax and insanity inducement. It was also cool to see how she would do in another Onryo focused series with Sadako's verse though it seems she was outclassed by the insane amount of abilities possessed by that verse's characters along with their overall competence. Exploiting her trauma as a weakness came up more than I expected in these various verses, which makes sense but is still messed up, but that's horror for you. Unless, of course, you are talking about the Professor X scenario you mentioned (I want this crossover now :P).
